The Big Bad Wolf's Ex

Rate this book
Reece Lassiter was a ruthless bastard.

He had everything a wolf shifter could want. He even had the perfect mate. Jolie was the only woman he’d ever trusted. The only woman he’d ever loved. She had been his everything. Until the day she had betrayed his trust and eviscerated his soul. Reece had cut her out of his life with a ruthlessness that shocked even him. He had encased his broken heart in ice so thick and glacial that nothing could ever penetrate it again.

And he’d been wrong.

His mate had not betrayed him. He had betrayed her and destroyed them both in the process. Now he'll stop at nothing to get her and their cub back. But his ex-wife is not the same woman that he remembered. His sunshine girl had been a creature of sweetness and light, not this hissing, vitriol filled she-cat who wanted to claw his eyes out. Reece might be an unstoppable force, but Jolie had become an unmovable object.

Is the big bad wolf strong enough to reclaim her heart?

If you enjoy grovelling in your romance books...
If you love stories with bastard males who are trying to redeem themselves for the majority of the book...
If you like females who are holding their stance and they don't forgive until the end of the book...

...then this book is for you.

Reece grovels from almost the first page of the book until the last page of the book and he is not easily forgiven.

"I exist but I am not alive, I function but there is no purpose. I'm a shell; empty, lifeless, without substance," he elaborated and dropped to his knees before her. "Without you, there is no joy, no peace for my miserable, wretched soul. I'm hollow inside without your love. A bleak, fathomless void of darkness that stretches to infinity."

Hahaha....hahaha....hahaha

I loved it. Every heartbreaking, tearjerking grovelling. He actually deserved it! He should have begged much more.

Okay, I am a hypocrite.

This is so stupid, but it was so much fun I'm tempted to go for three star. Definitely falls under guilty pleasure. And it's free, Kindle Unlimited. Woohoo!

The H is the Uber Alpha Head Muckety Muck Wolf Man Jack who kicked his mate out because he thinks she cheated on him. The ole vasectomy reversal, eh?

He kicked her out without even her shoes and she's blackballed from doing any dancing other than the topless kind. Given what some topless dancers make you would think she could do better than a rat trap apartment and a shoebox of used toys for her son, but this is not my universe. Sounds like she needs to to move to Kristen Ashley's and work for Smithie.

Circumstances as in a bad beard girlfriend have him test his little guys and...

It was true. He could father a child. Then that meant...

NO! He wouldn’t go there. Couldn’t even consider the possibility. Because if he did… and it was true… then he had eviscerated his own soul and shut himself off from the only happiness he’d ever known... for nothing. The knowledge sent him to his knees.

*******************

His mate had not betrayed him. He had betrayed her and destroyed himself in the process.
God help him, what had he done?

You fucked up, dude. That's what.

The H runs to the h in her rat trap apartment.

he had not expected the absolute loathing that he'd seen in her eyes. The sheer hatred and bitterness evident in her tone. Jesus Christ, what had he done to her?

You made her mad. Really, really mad.

This girl could give advanced lessons in vengeance. Line starts at the rear HP chicks. Take notes as there will be a practical test.

He expresses horror that she has lived in squalor for the past four years. Yep, it took him four long celibate years.

Everyone is too afraid of pissing off the big bad alpha to hire your ex-mate."

"Are you serious?" He asked incredulously.

"Does this look like Broadway to you?" Jolie demanded furiously.

"I sure as hell didn't study dance all those years with the intention of stripping."

And there it was. Confirmation straight from the source. Jesus fucking Christ. His mate was a stripper.

Big hairy H hasn't met the plot puppy yet, but is pleasantly surprised by the lisping wonder when he does.

The h tells him
"I had him tested at two. His IQ was over 145 which means…"

"He's a genius," Reece said in astonishment. If he'd needed further confirmation that Bryce was his, that would have done it.

Never let it be said that the H is humble.

The bad beard girlfriend makes another appearance, nude in his bed, which makes the heroine angry again so her inner hulk comes out.

"You mated with the maid?" His former lover shrieked in outrage.

"Hardly," Jolie replied scathingly. "I'm a stripper."

The H had been celibate the past four years and only used these chicks as his beard and probably to make the heroine jealous. Unfortunately she was too busy starving, raising his brainiac cub and stripping to actually notice.

The h keeps up the cold shoulder much longer than most, but eventually succumbs to his mighty alpha wolfy ways.

She also makes an epic revenge play.

P.S.
I think Pussy Whipped: Bad Alpha Dads may have to be next because.... the TITLE.

I'm a cold hearted b*tch and I can hold a mean grudge 😉😂 but I wouldn't have forgiven the hero. I mean he threw her out call the cops on her, she was pregnant, he didn't cared at all.. let's said even if the kid wasn't his, he just threw her out!
And for him just to get tested because the OW tried to pass her baby as his?
She was his MATE for god's sake!!!
Sure he groveled but it wasn't enough for me.. Like I said GRUDGE..... I would have kicked his balls, punch his face or hit his head with a bat.. Just saying!! 😂

Oh what the fuck was that?, he undressed the OW because she got drunk and he was scared that she was going to choked on her own vomit but he could be an asshole to HIS MATE??

I enjoyed the heck out of this one. Talk about an angst fest with tons of grovel and a heroine that stands her ground. Dude was a HUGE asshole. I probably wouldn't have EVER gave him a second chance, but boy did he mentally self-flagellate himself. *lol*

I really needed an epilogue though.

The books I read to have a strong heroine… unbelievable… *lol*

I’m not into shifter theme and know nothing about this topic.
But since my trusted friends enjoyed this story I jumped in.

Well, I never hide the fact that I’m a BIG VB -> vengeful bitch.
Yep, that’s me. No reason to pretend.

So, the things male protagonist did to his mate/female protagonist were inexcusable and unredeemable.
He threw he away, literally threw her away, pregnant with his child, because he thought she cheated on him. Shifter or not – every person knows that vasectomy is never 100% effective. Never!

He even called the police to escort her to homeless shelter. She was alone all 4 years, raised their son and worked as a stripper.

And he was like Boom! vasectomy didn’t work, I can have kids, so my mate was pregnant with my baby, I want her back.
F*cker!

Yep, he groveled, a couple of day and then she slept with him.
Yep, she was strong, for a couple of days and then she slept with him.

She suffered 4 years and he groveled ONLY for a short time. I don’t like this math. Nope!

I, as a big VB, would take his money and tell him to f*ck off.

Some things can’t be forgiven. EVER!

So, nope, this story didn’t satisfy me.

Reread accidentally. Trashy good fun. 👍🏻👍🏻

✅ dude throws out innocent perfect princess fiancé because he thinks she cheated

✅ finds out 4 years later she was telling the truth

✅ finds sweet perfect ex fiancé living in poverty and supporting herself and their son by stripping

✅ queue GROVEL

✅ some light OW and OM drama

Bottom Line? It’s all very Harlequin Presents, with a little PNR wolf mate theme added in as an after thought. It was a fun short palate cleanser. 🤷🏼‍♀️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

⚠️SAFETY SQUAD SPOILERS⚠️

- no cheating or sharing

- OW drama - a evil OW tries to pin a pregnancy on the H, but he never even slept with her - she makes an appearance at his apartment, which pisses the h off, but nothing really comes of it

- OM drama - h is dating someone and the H loses his mind - she lets him think she slept with the OM

- no dubcon

- h and H are both celibate during their 4-year separation

I truly wasn't expecting a lot from this, it is your standard almost HP day at the office in tropyness and I have read that a gadzillion times before, but this time we got some Wolf Shifters.

Dare I say I give great kudos to TB's hommage to HPlandia's classic Uncertain Destiny, right down to the (in this case literal,) Wolfie H.

But unlike Uncertain, this h has a spine of steel and hell hath no fury like a really irked mum who has to strip for a living to keep her gifted child in an advantageous school. The H has to GROVEL, a lot and I liked that.

He gets a really sad backstory too, so I was okay with him being a nematode in the past cause we only get his horrible behavior in flashback. I was willing to suspend belief and he grovels so well, we can send him to the Olympics for grovelers and probably win gold.

Yes, this is a fluffy, furry romance and the h is won over because the H is also an EXCELLENT dad and the h loves him - they are wolves, they mate for life and the h is human but she is like that too.

I had fun with this and I thank Vintage and Vintage's epic review for sending me on a very entertaining Non-HPlandia outing.

This one suffered from the novella length. The author did not have time to give the characters time in the backstory or current events to truly give depth to the love, the rejection, the reconciliation as needed to feel it. It was somewhat entertaining. Because of the shorter length, I cannot shelve this as a grovel or redemption, so I shelved it as mini-grovel. This is a light read and does not have the sufficient angst for the subject matter.

4 I only read it for the grovel stars....

I have to say that this was one of the most grovely grovels I have ever read. He was extremely sincere in his grovel and his remorse over how things happened was papable. He was constantly beating himself up AND he should have! He was a true asshole and IF I had to go through the scene where he threw her out and then divorced her then I would have absolutely hated this book. His action were truly deplorable BUT he paid the price.

This is a guy who was willing to relinquish his rights to HIS child just so the heroine would trust that he wasn't going to take their son from her. This is the guy who CRIED when he found out what. A major mistake he made. This is also the guy who knew how to fight dirty, knew how to get what he wanted, knew which buttons to push BUT he didn't! His actions are what ultimately won the heroine over..

I also adored the heroine. She didn't take him back immediately, she didn't just look the other way, and she didn't hide the hurt he caused her. She also didn't use her son as a bargaining chip.

So with all that goodness why not 5 stars:

The 4 year separation
How he found out the truth
The fact that he chose to "appear" to have moved along by dating OW ( no sex though...he was celibate the whole time)
Their first sexual encounter was directly after the OW who claimed to be pregnant with his child was found on HIS bed in HIS apartment almost naked....yeah because OW coming onto your man is a turn on *smh*
The story pretty much ended after they had sex
Her "testing" of him at the end...there was NO reason for it and it was horrible for her to do such a thing.

How the fuck is this a romance? He threw her out and even called the cops on her when she told him she was pregnant. He never cared for 4 years and not until a wannabe ow told him that she was preggy and then he had his vasectomy checked to prove he’s not the father. Like wtf? His mate became a stripper, she almost died during childbirth.. fuuuck 4 years of abject povery! Wtf! He barely even grovels. No amount of sorries could take away all the suffering he caused. Grrr!!!!

1 ⭐- Ugh! Didn't like it or triggers or pet peeve!
=======================================
This hero is a POS asshole, I don't believe in his celibacy. The other woman got pregnant and he ran to get exams to make sure, so he wasn't sure if he was the father. He didn't have the same courtesy with his wife.
He threw her out of the house with nothing but the clothes she was wearing on her body and escorted by the police. She went to live in what looks like a shithole and work as a stripper to support his son.
And the other woman being in his bed waiting for him means she had enough intimacy for such a thing. He did not convince me of faithfulness and celibacy for even a second.
I would never forgive him, but I am a bitch holding a grudge. Our heroine is an idiot for taking this POS back.
I thought they were werewolfs irrelevant to the story. But it seems they just put it there to fit some series.

There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that the child was his. Jolie had given him a son. And he’d abandoned them both.

“What made you change your mind?” He asked curiously as he stood. “Clarice claimed she was pregnant,” he admitted grimly and shocked the hell out of Dane.

"You fucked her?" He asked in disbelief.

She had looked good on his arm and helped foster the pretense that losing his mate hadn't affected him at all. Heartless and emotionless, they had been a match made in hell.

Yet his mate and son were living in something out of his worst nightmares. His self-disgust and remorse grew by the second, as did his determination to get them the hell out of there.

A wave of anguish washed over Reece as he recalled ordering her massive designer wardrobe be removed from his home and burned.

Reece had thrown her out of their home with nothing but the clothes on her back. He'd had George cut off her access to their joint checking account, canceled all of her credit cards, charge accounts, and club memberships. Determined to make her suffer for betraying him, he'd left her with absolutely nothing.

Because the cold hard truth was that Reece had never loved her. If he had, he wouldn't have walked away and left her completely shattered. He couldn't have turned his back on her and their baby. But he had, and he'd done it in the cruelest way possible. He had broken her heart, destroyed her dreams and crushed her spirit.

"Now you want to talk?" She demanded and laughed bitterly. "You're four years too late."

Jolie had learned the hard way that Reece Lassiter was completely ruthless.

The next step was to exploit that weakness. That meant using the boy to get to his mother.

His mate worked in a goddamn strip club!

"Like I have a choice," she snapped bitterly. "Thanks to you, I'm unemployable. Everyone is too afraid of pissing off the big bad alpha to hire your ex-mate."

The look she gave him was scathing, to say the least. "I'd almost forgotten how the filthy rich like their toys."

"Oh. I see," Jolie said as realization dawned and she was madder than hell now. "You thought I was lying because another woman said she was having your child."

"Clarice… Duvall… is pregnant?" She asked as she stood and stared at him with pain etched all over her beautiful face. "That's why you believe me now," she accused and he could tell that the shock was wearing off fast and anger was taking its place. "Because she's having your child!"

If she really had been his mate, Reece could never have cut her out of his life. Never abandoned her and their child. Never destroyed the perfect love that they had shared. But he had, and she'd never forget...

"A man without mommy issues would have assumed something had gone wrong with the procedure and had a test done to confirm it instead of accusing his mate of being unfaithful."

He had thrown Jolie out with nothing but the clothes she'd been wearing. She'd been a distraught, sobbing mess when the police had hauled her away.

she strode into the master suite and froze mid-step. Sprawled across the bed in a provocative pose wearing a seductive smile and little else, was Clarice Duvall.

"You mated with the maid?" His former lover shrieked in outrage. "Hardly," Jolie replied scathingly. "I'm a stripper."

The first time he had ever taken Jolie home with him, he had admitted that he'd had the entire bedroom completely redone for her. Because he hadn't wanted the scent of any other woman ever occupying the bed they shared.

If you like a story where the hero screws up big time and has to do some major groveling, then this book might be for you.

I love a good story where the hero can be a jerk (not by cheating or having ow) and then has to make it right. That is exactly what happened with this couple. He turned his back on his mate when she needed him most and left her destitute. However, when he did happen upon the truth he went to her to get her and his son back. I was glad she didn't take him right back because if he hadn't found out by chance that he was able to father children, she would still be in that run down building, stripping to support her and her son. Like the heroine, I had a hard time believing that he loved her as much as he proclaimed because of the cruel way her treated her - without even giving her a chance to talk about it.
-ow drama- he acts like he has a string of women that he sleeps with in order to not show weakness to the pack since he is Alpha. One that he sees frequently claims to be pregnant which is what prompted him to have tests run. It is not true because
-om drama- her son's pediatrician was in her life but she hadn't slept with him. He caught her off guard and kissed her.
-heroine pushes away most of the book
-not very steamy
-no epilogue at all

Wow...my stomach was in knots the whole time. Talk about angst! Reece was a grade A bastard asshole. While I can "sort of" understand why he reacted initially like he did, it really pissed me off that he could do that to his mate. Why not just prove it then instead of later when you're confronted with the same proclamation? And seeing how she had to live just made me angrier. She should have taken his money and kicked his ass to the curb for good! I silently cheered as she got her little dig in towards the end.

The best thing was little Bryce. He was awesome.

Was his grovel good? Not enough for me but better than some. He publicly humiliated her. He should have had to publicly admit what he did and was wrong.

Did he punish himself? Yes, his inner thoughts tore me up. He was truly sorry and he beat himself up continually. I just needed a public pronouncement to make it near perfect.

I would have like to see them further in the future. I, as well as I can imagine Jole, need to be assured he'd never act that way again.

I'm definitely checking out more of this author though. The writing drew me in right away.

3 "Because this is a unicorn book" STARS

First of all, what the hero did to the heroine was despicable and the separation was too long for me to enjoy this book. BUT, considering the existence of very, very less books where the hero actualy grovels and the heroine doesn't take back the H from the get-go, I'm rating this a 3, in the hopes that this is the start of hopefully what will be the evolution and continuation of more writers writing more grovelling H and stronger h.

The book itself is very short. It's also a fantasy where shifters are living in perfect armony with humans.
It's basically a big grovel from the beginning to the end.
The hero is a shifter wolf, an alpha, very powerful and rich.
The heroine is his mate, human I suppose.
They were married when the heroine got pregnant and the hero threw her out of his life, literally, because he had a vasectomy years before and thought he was sterile.
Of course he's not, but he left the heroine and his son alone for four years.
The heroine was left without a penny and couldn't find a good job because of him, so she's now a stripper, poor soul, living in a squalid place and paying her son's special school.
When the hero's last bimbo declares she's pregnant, he decides to have a count sperm analysys to prove her wrong, and when the result is that he can father a child he understand that 4 years befor he made the greatest mistake of his life.
So he goes back to the heroine, who, thank god, is furious and doesn't want to have anything to do with him.
Never again.
So he grovels, and grovels, and grovels until she gives up.
What I liked:
-The angst level: very high. The heroine really had a miserable life when the hero jilted her, she also risked her life when her son was born. The hero suffered a lot because wolves can't live without their mates and cried all the books knowing what he did to her and his son.
- he was celibate. He dated women because he's an alpha and couldn't afford to appear shattered by the divorce. Not very nice but he couldn't touch any other woman.
-The end. The hero redeems himself when she tells him she's pregnant and he might not be the father, and he tells her he will be a father to her child and will love her because it's a part of her. Of course the child is his and she was lying.
What I didn't like:
-The way he threw her out of his life, without even letting her explain. And don't tell me it's his beast inside because beasts, dogs especially, are much, much more loyal than humans and would always forgive their humans. This cruelty sadly is all human.
-I didn't understand why his brother, who was in touch with the heroine all the time, and knew the hero made a huge mistake, didn't provide some means for her and his nephew, since it looks like he's rich too. Don't family ties count for anything at all here?
-I also didn't understand why the heroine didn't ask for DNA test, she should have had money from her divorce.
-Of course there's the big and bad TBS, the heroine can't resist her attraction to the man, even if he basically ruined her life.
-He dated a lot, and I don't buy he was so unhappy without her. Since he had her followed, he knew she had no lover, but he never tried to see her again and came back only because he had a medical report that claimed he could have children.
I quite enjoy it for its angst even if it is too short and has many inconsistencies.

Reece the groveler and Jolie the grovelee.
He kicks her out because she is pregnant and he believes that his vasectomy rendered that an impossibility... hence she is a tramp, despite all indications otherwise.
As everyone says, this one is pretty much about the grovel. The story starts 4 years after she was kicked out when it comes to light that his vasectomy has reversed itself. There are flashbacks but they aren't incessant or overdone. He is a wolf shifter and alpha of the city but very little page time is devoted to either character trait. There are a few helpful side characters and an OW wannabe.
Safety is pretty good

What the hero did to the heroine was abysmal, but I loved the fact that he more than made up for it. He groveled, and I mean groveled, hard. And the heroine wasn't a simpering idiot that forgave him two seconds after he apologized, nope, she made him work for it. It showed that she had a backbone and self-respect. I would've preferred it if the heroine would've been successful on her own and not have had to live in poverty while separated from her ex, but it's just a little thing. I also loved the fact that throughout the four years they were separated, neither the hero or heroine were with other people, yay! 😊

Good shifter story about what happens when the bond is broken. Jolie was a very strong person, despite the agony that her supposed mate put her through. Her son, Bryce, was very "cutsie", especially when he misunderstands about his father "one day you'd open youw eyes and come see me".

I re-read because I didn’t realize that Ruthless Bastard (RB) was a reboot of the same book with minimal changes. Mainly that they are humans, and the couple are with OP during the separation. They’re also a few bonus scenes, and a small mystery. The author stated that the story was always supposed to be contemporary romance, and she just shortened tweaked it a bit to release with Howls Romance. IMO, this explains why certain events of this felt off. Like why would he check if he’s still sterile when Clarice accused him of knocking her up if they never had sex, or why did Jolie’s face drained of color when Reece asked if she’d slept with pediatrician Gavin if they too never had sex?? In RB they’ve both had sex, (Clarice & Gavin) so their actions make more sense.

****** Original Review******
This is for all those that love an asshole!! The Big Bad Wolf’s Ex is like the shifter version of The Marciano Love-Child. (except this H actually feels bad after, and the "forgiveness" justifier is rather than CF) We have a H (Reece) who kicks his pregnant mate (Jolie) out, because he’s convinced she cheated on him. (he had a vasectomy) And for those that love angst… it’s harsh. He kicks her out with zero $$; cancels accts/cards/etc.; calls the police to handcuff and cart her off to the homeless shelter (w/out shoes) and badmouths her, so she can’t get a job, and has to work as a stripper.

The books starts four years after the split with Reece realizing his swimmers actually swim, and he’s been an epic bastard. The rest of the book is pretty much him trying to make up for it. He’s an asshat, but did grovel, and feel real remorse. There’s a lot of sobbing, being gutted, hearts ripped apart with guilt that helped. He’s also had a pretty horrific past that led him to assume the worse. The main problem was just that the length (90 pages) didn’t really give us enough page time to truly develop the story, but was entertaining in a more surface-y way.

Bottom Line- I personally love an asshole, especially one who sees the light and tries to redeem himself. I liked that he didn’t bully/blackmail his way back into her life. **Safety** H is photographed with other women during separation, so his pack doesn’t think the betrayal killed him, but he’s celibate (both are) during the 4-yr break. There’s a small part with wannabe OW, but not really a big deal.

In a world where shifters are known and accepted, the most powerful wolf shifter did something terrible to his fated mate when she was pregnant he threw her out with only the clothes on her back. Now because of something that’s happened he knows he was wrong. But a long time has passed and she quite rightly hates him.

A novella length story that was okay but I did have a few issues with it. It doesn’t say whether the heroine is human or a shifter like him, the hero’s brother who disagreed with what he’d done apparently helps her, ( they’re really rich) not so you would notice from her terrible living conditions and the job she forced to do to make ends meet to look after her son.

I just couldn’t see how after everything he’d done how she could forgive him. I think the author took his behaviour too far for me to believe that he was forgivable. The story needed fleshing out more it felt too rushed.

Super short idiotic novella, but kept me amused for an hour.

Why idiotic? The alpha wolf (dont even know why he had to be a wolf, maybe to establish that they mate for life which ok, but the mate couple is divorced)

Anyways the Alpha decides to get tested on whether his vasectomy was reversed because his mistress is claiming she is pregnant! However the crux of the matter is that he knows he NEVER slept w her or anyone else (coz mates mate for life) so how logical is that!! He didn’t even need to test!

** expl fake mistress got drunk one night, he took her home and undressed her, she woke up and thought they did it.**

The whole reason he divorced his “life mate” 🙄 was because he thought she cheated since he could not impregnate anybody. Why didnt he take the test then? Why take it when you know you never even had sex w fake mistress? AND supposedly his guy is a genius 🙄

So rest of novella is how he feels remorse, tries to get his mate and kid back and grovel some.

What I liked:

Seeing his absolute horror of how desperately poor they are. Plus knowing his wife had to strip to make ends meet, and possibly whore herself out as well. She didn’t but he doesn’t know that… so his devastation is sweet.

I liked that the heroine was not too proud and easily accepted the 1M deposited into a personal account for her and that she didnt insist on staying in the crap hole where she lived.

Best of all the mini revenge she has on him in the end 😉 Just for that it deserves an extra star! 😂 LMAO 🤣
