A relative suggested that I read this book about the life of Michelangelo Caravaggio a 16th century artist. This isn’t the type of book that I would normally choose but once I started reading, I had a difficult time putting it down. Caravaggio had one of the most captivating lives imaginable not just as an artist but as a man. A large portion of his life was filled with tragedy and violence but also with great passion especially pertaining to his art. You can see where the author did her researc ...more

I have been a fan of the historical fiction genre nearly all my life. I'm always intrigued by new authors who dive into this genre and Kristine Balog has claimed herself amongst my top ten list of favorite authors. I knew nothing about Caravaggio when I decided to read this book, what captivated me was the cover and back of the book, but as I read I found myself craving more; more about him, more about this story, and more about the field of art history. Though I found myself having to look up s ...more

Historical fiction is not a genre I usually read. I probably would never have picked up this marvelous book had the author not been seated next to me at the Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, CA a few months ago.
Over the course of the day, I eavesdropped on her conversations with fairgoers about the life of Caravaggio and her extensive research on the artist’s intriguing life. It came as no surprise to find out Kristine Balog is also an Art History professor. She has some very lucky students!

Kristine Balog's glorious debut novel about the the rise of Baroque painter, Michelangelo de Caravaggio pulls the reader into a world of artistry of late 16th Century Rome. A child savant in his craft, Caravaggio climbs the social latter of Rome's high society, making a name for himself as the artist of his day. Vivid imagery, a fast-paced plot, and a nail-biting ending make this a jolly ride. No need to be an expert on art history or even know Caravaggio's name to enjoy this tale of a mostly ov ...more

I never even knew who Caravaggio was until I read this book. It was so interesting it led me to want to learn more about this magnificent painter. The book was so well written it felt like you were there in the midst of his trials and success.

I remember always loving art, but disliking Art History when I took it in college. I wish this book was around then! I had heard of Caravaggio before, but never knew the breadth of adversity he had faced in life. This book surpassed all of my expectations. I couldn’t put it down! The author displays not only her expertise in both Art History and religion, but she is a profound writer, she reminds me of the old greats with her rich descriptions and profound insights.
