Summer Heat

Rate this book
A summer fling is an ideal cure for a broken heart. But when it’s with your best friend, things get complicated.

When Adam is dumped by his boyfriend, a week away at a beach resort seems like a great opportunity to get over his ex. Sun, sea, and no-strings sex will be just the boost he needs to move on with his life.

Adam’s best friend, Finn, agrees to accompany him at short notice. Finn’s had a crush on Adam for years, but is determined to put his feelings aside and be the perfect wingman in Adam’s time of crisis.

A spontaneous threesome with another guy forces Adam and Finn to confront their attraction to each other. Having a holiday fling together wasn’t part of the plan, and as their trip heats up, they soon realise that one night of fun won’t be enough for either of them.

The passion might be scorching, but their hearts and friendship are on the line. If their romance is going to survive the flight home, they have to be honest about what they want.

If you're having a crap week, this book is better than Xanax at helping you cope. I'm speaking from personal experience.

Summer Heat is a very spicy and low-angst read. Scratch that. It gets my No Angst for Miles guarantee.

Two best friends, flirtatious but never lovers, go on a romantic getaway together to a gay resort in Spain. Adam had booked the holiday as a surprise for his boyfriend, Drew, but that was before Drew traded him in for a younger model.

The "Heat" in the title is not misleading. This is an insanely SEXY story! A threesome is a catalyst for Adam and Finn admitting that they want to be more than friends, with Adam suggesting they play fuck buddies for the rest of the holiday.

Neither man wants to acknowledge that this thing between them is more than a short summer fling, but the lack of communication doesn't last too long.

Drew was a complete twat and Adam and Finn had been besties for many years, but I still thought their move from friends to boyfriends was too abrupt. Even if you're in a lousy long-term relationship and you're the one who breaks it off (which was not the case with Adam), there's always a grieving stage. Adam forgets all about Drew a little too quickly. But whatever.

This is not meant to be a deep read. It's meant to be FUN & STEAMY, and it is all that with whipped cream on top.

4 Stars.Sexy,summer story.

Perfect holiday read,
Low angst,friends to lovers story.

Adam and Finn have been friends for years.Finn has always had a bit of a crush on Adam but he would never act on it while Adam was in a relationship.Things are about to change, though, when Adam breaks up with his boyfriend and asks Finn to go on the holiday with him that he had planned with his ex.

Sun,sea,sand,and sex....

After a hot threesome,Adam and Finn go from being just friends. They are about to get as hot and heavy as the weather...

Ok,so they go from being friends to lovers at a rapid speed-but,it is what it is.....a light, sexy, summer story.

Recommend.

Steamy. Definitely steamy.

There are books that you read for lots of plot twists and dramatics, but this wasn't one of those.

The premise is pretty simple.

1.) Best friends go on a summer holiday, after one friend is dumped by his long-term boyfriend for a different, younger dick.

2.) Sex and feeling happen. Lots of sex. Frequent sex. Flip-floppy sex.

3.) Both guys waffle over, "What happens to our friendship now?"

4.) They get over those worries and become boyfriends.

This story was fun and flirty, along with all of the sex, but my only niggle was that the MC's voices weren't overly distinct. I was constantly having to go back to the chapter headings to see if the "I" and "me" on-page was Adam or Finn.

Other than a couple of confrontation scenes between Adam and his selfish, cheater of a dick-hole ex-boyfriend, the book is entirely, blessedly angst free.

In my view, the story ends with the strong beginnings of an HEA, as the guys are insanely compatible and had already known one another for years and years.

So if you're looking for a light summer read with lots of heat, in the shower, in bed, in the club, on the beach, up against a door, then this one would probably be a good choice for you.

Overall, I'd rate this one at around 3.5 stars.

This was a sweet Summer read.

Low on angst. Friends with benefits to lovers over a Summer getaway. Hot sexy times. Great chemistry. It was everything I could ask for at the time I read it. I really enjoyed it, but it didn't wow me.

Adam gets dumped by his much older boyfriend who likes them young and has decided Adam expiration date is past due. He found himself a young'un that he also happens to work with and has been cheating on Adam with. Adam is a bit devastated as he should be considering he has been with the man for five years and they were engaged. Heartbroken he ends up on his best mates step. Finn can't help to feel a bit happy even if his bestie is miserable at the moment. He always hated Adam's BF, but he just honestly is happy because he's always had a crush on Adam. He had hoped in the past that things would've happened between them but then Adam got into the relationship with the cheating douche, Drew.
Adam realizing the trip to Spain he booked for him and his ex is coming up soon asks Finn to join him on the getaway. From here things get spicy when the men are tangled up in a threesome that soon turns into them having some benefits with their friendship. But old feelings Finn had comes into play and Adam is having his own feelings bubble up as well and soon both men are declaring their love for the other.
It was an enjoyable read as usual from this author. But like I said, nothing wowing. Just a great friends to lovers story.

Happy reading dolls! xx

Well…this book definitely deserves its title, cause there was some serious HEAT in this one :P

 reaction hot fan fanning GIF

This is a friends to lovers story, that is low on angst and high on the good feels ;) .

After Adam gets dumped by his boyfriend of 5 years, he seeks out his best friend Finn. Finn, of course, has been hiding his true feelings for his best friend for some time, and he isn’t all that upset to hear about Adam’s break up.

So when Adam asks him to go on a romantic getaway he had already booked and planned, Finn doesn’t really have to think about saying yes.

While on their little vacation, the two of them join in a threesome with another guy. The lines of their friendship blur from there and… these two really get it on!!

tumblr_mglf49tmKU1qzg447o3_400.gif (400×268)

They pretend it’s just gonna be for this summer…just fucking and nothing more…But we all know how that is a lie…The question is what will happen to their relationship/friendship when their vacation time ends…

There is a lot of steam in this book…It seemed like Adam and Finn were trying to make up for all their years of just being friends…  Not that I minded. 😛

 passion GIF

If you are looking for a light and hot summer read, this book is perfect!

I would have liked to read it on a beach on some tropical island, but well…we can’t all get what we want.

It isn’t a very deep story though. These two go from friends to lovers quite fast, but I tried to keep in mind that they had been friends for many years…I myself prefer a bit more angst in my books, but sometimes…I like to enjoy a light book in between heavier reads.

So boring, it was a suffering to read. It took me almost a month to finish.
In the first half nothing happened, it was an endless recitation of all of their actions: what they did at the pool, in the restaurant, what they eat, etc.
The second half was a non-stop fuck fest, occassionaly interrupted with rubbing sunscreen on each other.
Plus, both of the MCs irritated the hell out of me.

This story is so un-Northcote-like, I can't believe it is the same author who wrote Helping Hand...

I'm utterly disappointed.

No one does sweet and low angst like Jay Northcote. I just adore his writing style and anytime he comes out with a new story, I'm ready to knock my blog-mates over so I can be first in line! It's a good thing we all like each other!

Summer Heat does what it says on the tin. Best friends to lovers while on a holiday to Spain-- does anything sound better than that? And it was a very sexy read.

Adam had been in a ho-hum relationship with an older guy for 5 years, until the cheating bastard dumped him for a new boy-toy. Adam was hurt, of course, but part of him knew things were fizzling out. He did the right thing and walked away and went to the one person who could help him through it -- his best friend Finn.

Finn, of course, has had a crush on Adam for years, but with Adam being in a relationship, he didn't want to risk losing the one person that meant the most to him. When Adam comes over unexpectedly, after breaking up with his lying, cheating boyfriend, he does what any best friend would do -- he breaks out the alcohol. And then goes on holiday with his mate for some sun, fun and hookup sex!

What better way for Adam to get over his break up than with some no-strings sex with someone he barely knows, right? But nothing turns out like they expect, when Niall, the hookup, suggests a threesome with both Adam and Finn.

The UST was off the charts in Summer Heat! And I thought it was high before they had sex, but after? Holy moly, it ratcheted up to unprecedented levels. I thought I was going to combust before they decided to keep their holiday fling going - and then decide if they were ready to face their feelings for one another.

And just like I know to expect from Jay Northcote, there is no manufactured drama here. Our boys may not declare themselves right away, but they don't need to have a bunch of unnecessary drama to figure out they want to be together. And they are so sweet. And hot. And sexy. Their relationship goes from friends to lovers to boyfriends without conflict, but it still felt believable to me.

In fact, my only real niggle with the story, at all, is just how quickly Adam seemed to get over his 5 year relationship abruptly ending. But I'll forgive it, not only because the ex was a jerk of the first water and totally didn't deserve Adam, but I also don't think Adam was actually in love with him as much as he was in love with the idea of him. So, maybe it wasn't much of a niggle, after all. Also, Adam and Finn were clearly both harboring feelings for each other for ages that they were keeping to themselves.

As a side note, I loved Niall, a lot. He was truly awesome and fun and I would love for him to get a story of his own! I truly enjoyed Summer Heat. It's the perfect beach read or a fantastic way to spend any afternoon.

Hurray! I’ve found the perfect summer book! If you are going on vacay or have some surf and sand time coming up, never fear, I’ve just scored the book you need to take with you. Make room in your suitcase for Summer Heat, because this is an essential you won’t want to leave home without. It may kick off with a bit of angst but soon a smile will grace your face and never leave. Jay’s signature cocktail tickled my taste buds and left me grinning like a fool.

Here’s the run down…
Adam is dumped by his boyfriend and though he’s devastated the jerk was actually doing him a favor. The first place Adam seeks comfort is in his best friend's arms. Finn has secretly coveted Adam throughout the years, but fate always kept them apart romantically. When Adam decides to continue on with his summer holiday plans, he convinces Finn to go with him. A bleeding heart, a secret crush, and boys with booze…what could go wrong?

What's to like: There’s always LOTS to like when it comes to Jay’s stories. Adam and Finn take off to Spain to soak up some fun in the sun at a gay resort. Yowza, if there’s one place to forget your troubles, this is it. The plan is for Adam to drown his sorrow’s in umbrella-laden drinks and beautiful men. But it’s been years since he was single and prowling doesn’t sound very appealing. However, when an opportunity presents itself that includes Finn in the mix, it’s a whole new game. Ménage doesn’t always work for me but this time three-in-the-bed was flippin’ phenomenal. I think it worked so well for me because the ‘third’, a complete stranger, was the catalyst that brought Adam and Finn together. I imagine they eventually would have figured things out, but in a much slower fashion. After their sizzling night, they walk the awkward dance until they agree to treat this time as a summer fling. Silly boys. Don’t they know falling in love isn’t something you can turn off when you want?

What's to love: Finn and Adam. This is definitely a charter-driven story and luckily for me, I adored both MC’s. I’d have to say the secondary crew is fairly small. They meet some new friendly faces in Spain but the story revolves around the two besties. Their relationship is strong but has been strictly platonic since the beginning. Finn has harbored desires for more but the time was never right. Now that Adam is single again, he might have to go for it and take a chance. But is it worth the risk? He’s putting a lot on the line. Although he might not survive without knowing if Adam feels the same? Gahhhhh! I love it when best friends take the fall…together.

Beware of: Sweet, sexy and fun. If you’re looking for a meaty story to sink your teeth into, this may not check off your boxes. It’s rather simple with little heartache but oh-so-enjoyable.

This book is for: Northcote fans, friends-to-lovers fans, and anyone looking for the perfect beach book!

** 2.5 stars **

I picked this up immediately after finishing Nothing Ventured, my favorite of the Jay Northcote books I'd read so far. Summer Heat didn't change that opinion.

Maybe my expectations were set too high. It certainly didn't help that both books used the exact same plot device to overcome the lovers' resistance to commitment. The alternating POV offered two voices that were, unfortunately, indistinguishable from each other. Too much time was spent elaborating on the least significant details of daily existence, like brushing one's teeth. The excess verbiage bloated the word count and added nothing to the story.

Also: a threesome. Good news for some readers, not so much for me. If I'd known in advance, I wouldn't have bothered with the book.

There was one intense and memorable moment -- the MCs' first kiss -- but other than that this was a "meh" reading experience for me.

When Adam gets dumped by his boyfriend (the biggest jackass *shakes fist*), his best friend, Finn accompanies Adam to the one week vacation he was supposed to share with his ex. Finn has been in love with Adam for years.

They get a little push from a guy they meet at the hotel, and their attraction detonates in a scorching evening between the three of them.

The story had just the perfect length. No angst at all. This was just a bucket full of sunshine!

A very sweet, and scorching story about to guys who's been friends forever becoming boyfriends. There was also the bonus of a satisfyingly FU to the ex at the end. Yay! (*fist pump*)

A recommended vacation read!

Summer Heat indeed! This is the perfect beach read, very steamy and fairly low angst. And did I mention sexy?

When Adam's boyfriend dumps him, the first and only person he turns to is his best friend, Finn. And what better way to get over said asshole boyfriend, than to go with Finn on a trip in Spain?

What I liked:

-Ginger MC, everyone! You know how I feel about them and in this case Adam's ginger-ness was on the forefront more often than not.

-Friends-to-lovers theme, done very well.

-The threesome that acted as a catalyst for Adam and Finn to get together. I almost loved the third person as much as the MCs. I'd love to read a story about Niall in the future.

-The sex. There is A LOT of it. Finn and Adam make up for all the pent up feelings they had all these years.

-Jay Northcote's writing is always top notch and deliciously British.

What I didn' love:

-I felt that the transition from friends to lovers was somewhat abrupt. I'd have liked a little less sex and some more conflict maybe. But I generally like conflict in my books, so that's more like a personal preference.

-I found the last scene with Drew a little odd.

All in all, I enjoyed Summer Heat and I do recommend it for a light, sexy, fun read.

If you're looking for a steamy, friends to lovers, beach/holiday listen with fairly low angst and you've liked Jay Northcote in the past - you should definitely check this out.

There's no reinvention of the wheel here. It's pretty formulaic, and similar in tone and plot to other Northcote novels.

When Adam finds out his long-term boyfriend/fiancé is leaving him for another man, he goes to his best friend, Finn, for comfort. Finn ends up going with Adam on a summer holiday to Spain that had originally been for Adam and the ex.

The plan is simple, tried, and true - get over his ex by getting under someone new.

There's definitely some high steamy moments here - starting with a threesome that acts as the catalyst to Adam and Finn finally breaking the friends-only barrier. Once the wall is down it's all sex, all the time.

There's also the obvious miscommunication where neither Finn or Adam can tell they are falling for the other and keep saying things that make it seem like they want to only remain friends, when the opposite is totally the case.

Of course, there's finally the AHA! moment where they finally gets themselves on the same page and there's a HFN/HEA to be had in the end.

Mark Steadman narrates the British character voices with ease and it's an easy listen overall for the most part. I once again noticed Steadman's pacing as I continue to have issues with his excessive pauses and his inflection at times. However, I was prepared for his performance as it seems that's just how he narrates.

All in all I recommend Summer Heat if you're in the mood for a quick listen with a lot of sexy times coupled with a light, low-angst read.

These guys must have had major lip cramps, I’ve never read so many BJs in a book as in this one. Holy shit, these guys liked to do the oral nasty.

I was a bit afraid before I started this because I’m not a big fan of any kind of friends-with-benefits situation. But I was happy to find out this was more of a best friends to lovers than anything else. The sex was just a bonus.

These guys already had feelings for each other early on (despite one person not fully admitting it to himself). The threesome was very well done and happened around 50%. The massive amounts of sex happened after that. But it’s pretty soon after that these guys admit their feelings. They didn’t try to really try to diminish their relationship as simply a sexual one, what bothers me in so many books with this kind of relationship. But here it was quite obvious these guys loved each other.

Low on angst, very high on sex. A perfect summer read.

This was my very first audio book so I was super excited to listen to it. And I wasn't dissapointed! Mark Steadman had a great voice and even though I'm more familiar with the American accent and he had an english one (as it was logical as the characters are from England) I didn't have a problem understanding him. He was announciating very well and his accent wasn't very heavy. This might not be an issue for a native speaker but it would have been very difficult for me to get through the book if I was constantly trying to guess the words he used through the meaning of the rest of the sentence.

The story was good and as this is a summer read it contained a vacation and a lot of time in the sun. The progression of their relationship was very fast especially considering that Adam had just broken up with his boyfriend of five years. On the other hand, those two knew each other for years and were really close. Also, this is a light read that took place in barely two weeks time so I'm prepared to let some things slide.

I liked the beginning of their relationship a lot, so basically two thirds of the book, more than the time after they opened up about their feelings. Everything started with a threesome but it was clear that there was more between them than there was with the third person. Then there was a casual continuation of that night, but only with Adam and Finn involved, before they finally admitted their feelings for each other. I liked how they were trying to act as if it wasn't a big deal them sleeping together but both of them felt anything but that.

There was basically no drama in the book and I liked that. Light, summer read? Nailed it!

I didn't like the ending scene with Brian but I guess it was there to show that Adam made his choice and he had a future with Finn because he wanted it and not because he couldn't have Brian. It ended more in a HFN than a HEA but that was ok too.

This was a light friends-to-lovers summer story with a lot of sun, fun and salty water. I enjoyed it a lot and I'll be probably listening to it again at some road trip. I'll be sure to check out more books narrated by Mark Steadman in the future. He had a good voice and was able to keep me in the story.

Recommended, but read this on a beach. It's summer!

Like the Spanish setting, this delightful summer read from Jay is full of dry heat and steamy encounters.

It's light, a perfect beach read with a friends to lovers romance that just sits on the right side of sweet without being cloying.

Adam and Finn somehow never got it together when they first met as students and instead slipped into best friend status. When Adam finally splits from his older boyfriend after five fairly uninspiring years together he asks Finn to come with him on the holiday he'd had booked as a surprise for his ex.

And, under the red hot sun, things take a different turn as a holiday fling threesome stirs up feelings both men have kept hidden away.

While things happen in a relatively short time, I believed in their romance completely. The ground work was laid down well for their slide first into hooking up and then, following a specific incident, to move into love.

With a deft hand, Jay has crafted a lovely summer romance and Garrett Leigh's beautiful cover fully reflects the gorgeous-ness to be found inside.

2 stars = it was ok

And it was, ok. Based on the reviews I just read from all my friends I am again going to be in the minority with my feelings.

It happens.

It is ok to be different.

This just did not work for me. Let's talk about the setup, the breakup. Adam didn't just breakup with his boyfriend and fall in love with his best friend. He was dumped by his boyfriend he lived with for five years and who he had a ring from. Regardless of the why, which was the worst of the worst, it was still FIVE YEARS. I hate when the next day the broken heart is forgotten. That isn't realistic. I would have probably been better with this if they had been dating for a much shorter period. Again, FIVE YEARS! There were only two interactions with the ex and both seemed very childish and didn't feel at all like this had been a long term relationship. I just wish that part wasn't there at all!

So, that kind of ruined it for me from the beginning, but there was more. I didn't buy it between these guys. It seemed more convenient than true love and attraction. I don't know that much about their friendship to get a real feel for them but I think they were in their thirties. So, from college on they have been besties. Finn played “just friends” really well. I would have never thought he was into Adam if we weren’t in his head. I was very uncomfortable with a lot of the stuff going on. The pushing to go get back on the horse from Finn seemed like he'd really be ok with it. Actually, I think he would have. The third. That's just not my thing. I knew it going in so I am not really counting that toward my rating but I'll be honest, up until that actually happened Adam was kind of totally with this guy and Finn was giving them the room!! It didn't really seem like he was going to stop it. Isn't he supposed to stop it?

From 57% until the end it was on warp speed. Sometimes I love this. Sometimes insta-love, boom this is forever totally works for me, this time it just didn’t. I think Adam needs a break.

The whole thing just didn't work for me and I wasn't feeling fuzzy, more I was feeling a bit uncomfortable.

I wish these guys well though and am glad everyone else loved this!

This is one of the sweetest friends-to-lovers books I've ever read, set against the sun and sand backdrop of a summer holiday. While you might think that the initial push to take things past friendship was in the form of a threesome could be a little awkward, it actually was really hot and didn't take away from the authenticity of their feelings for each other.

Had Adam and Finn just met each other, I might have thought that everything was a little rushed, but they'd been best friends for years and the physical was the last missing piece of the puzzle, once they were actually able to really communicate their feelings. It was fun to see them enthusiastically exploring the physical side of their relationship - oh, to have that much stamina again!

This was a great summer read - low angst, sweet and sexy. It left me with a smile on my face.
