Many of us have wondered what comes after we die, and that is precisely what Chartier attempts to imagine with “Afterdeath”. This is the story of twin sisters Chloe and Olivia who—outside of having a ridiculously sad backstory—decide to go on a road trip to reconnect with one another after being separated for awhile in the foster care system. Along the way, tragedy strikes again, and the sisters find themselves, well, dead. From there, you’d think they’d immediately either freak out and try to f ...more

Benoit Chartier is a young Canadian writer of science fiction. He has written several short stories and two novels, Red Nexus and Afterdeath. He’s already very good, and what’s more he’s going to get better.
Afterdeath is as hypnotic as the vivid dream you had last week and can’t quite remember, but also can’t forget. When he’s “on,” Ben’s writing is really, spectacularly good. There are passages in Afterdeath that crackle with life closely observed and deeply felt, which is deliciously ironic in

This book was an interesting concept. A pair of twins have a car accident, the result of which is not what they, nor the reader, expected.

I really enjoyed the changing settings in this story. It was as if every fantasy setting (and some science fiction settings) you can think of appeared in this novel. This novel successfully manages to combine ancient Greek mythology with modern settings and a touch of fin de siecle.

The characters were likable, relatable, and delightfully flawed. As the r

Twin sisters Chloe and Olivia have drifted apart since their parents’ deaths. Now that their grandma is dead, the two decide to become reacquainted with a sister road trip. They both die. That sounds like a spoiler, but it happens early in the book, and the real story is about what happens AFTER Death. Hence the title, get it? Right.

So what does happen next? Let’s just say it’s NOTHING like you might expect. Olivia is a serious Christian, Chloe an agnostic, and both of them are in for a shock wh

I met Chartier at a Comic Con in early June. He was super friendly and very passionate about his works. I bought this book from him without realizing that I would be sucked into the twins' crazy world by page 2. This book was one heck of a ride and I enjoyed every moment of it. Sadly, with work, I had no time to truly immerse myself into their world cause I was exhausted by the end of the day, but I'll be picking it up again for sure to do so. My only complaint was the continuous shifting of the ...more

I’ll admit to having had a little difficulty getting into the book at first, mostly because Afterdeath falls a little outside of my usual book choices. That being said, the writing is excellent, the story wildly imaginative, and Benoit Chartier has drawn on enough real-world mythology to give his book great depth. Once I got going, I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading until early in the morning to finish it.
Very highly recommended.

An interesting read! I enjoyed this depressing yet curious read of what might come after death. I enjoyed the sisters Chloe and Olivia, but never connected with Angelica. I did like that it was completely unpredictable, and well thought out. Overall it's well written, and thought-provoking.

I really enjoyed this book. Benoit Chartier wrote a thrilling plot that kept me at the edge of my seat. His characters were well developed and each one had their own unique personality. And the ending was really cool!! I really hope that he writes a continuation of this book.

Different twist on death, a sort of pilgrims progress if you will. Only without the kings language.
