"Once you gave your mask to me, you would be allowed to venture down that path. The handmaidens of the forest would prepare you for me... Oh, you will find it a bit dreadful, I must admit."
Princess Evaline has grown up under the thumb of a strict and pious mother, never allowed to dance or sing, clad in drab dresses from neck to toe. But that all changes when she receives the invitation. "These wicked revels are meant for girls such as you. Leave the letter under your pillow and wear your slippers when you come to bed tomorrow. The gate shall open at midnight." In the faery realm, she can dance the night away...but soon her father will marry her off like her sisters before her. Or Evaline could stay in the revels...but only if she gives her mask away to the King of the Revels and belongs to him forever.
I was locked up with the princess. There was something about her delicate features, her small mouth slightly open in sleep, and her breath slowly rising and falling, that stirred a deeply protective instinct like I had never felt before.
Will once dreamed of being a musician, but was sent to fight in a pointless, bloody war by Evaline’s father the king. He came home with a limp and horrible memories of his friends dying in his arms. When Evaline’s father offers her hand in marriage to anyone who can figure out why her slippers are worn out in the morning, Will accepts the challenge purely out of revenge. As soon as he sees the princess, he wants to claim her for his own…but only if he can capture her heart fair and square and get past the King of the Revels.
These Wicked Revels is a standalone fairy tale retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses for those who like an unabashedly adorable happily ever after with a side of serious steaminess! (Even the trees are naughty in this one. You've been warned.)
Lidiya Foxglove grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales, folklore and fantasy and also reads way too much manga. Fantasy romance is her favorite thing in the world, but she likes it steamy. She also loves cats and tea--it's cliche for a reason!
3.5 stars! I have just completed book #2 in steamy fairytale land! I enjoyed this one much more then the first book in the series.
Evaline is a princess that has some seriously suppressed parents. Someone put a religious habit on her Mom for Christ sake. But I digress, Eva gets an invite from the King of the Revels. It's basically like a huge fairy/elf/goblin party that sends invites to women that are stifled in the human world.
And boy, does it get crazy after that point. Imagine dancing, music, wine, fornication, so yeah, it's a good time for all. ha! 😜 But there's always a catch in fairy land. If she takes off her mask, then she can't go back.
So now enters the character of Will in the story. He's a great man who doesn't agree with fighting the kingdoms' wars and has lost too many friends due to it. He's a citizen of the realm and decides to agree to the King's prize money/marriage to his daughter to find out where she's going to every night.
I'm not going to get to involved with the plot here. The book is only 143 pages long. Just go read it if you need some kinky, fairytale love or even a quick book to read.
Oh yeah, one other thing about this book. I'll look at trees a bit different now. o.O
Here I am, feeling bad for a one star review. Why? Well, I've breezed though several of the books in this series (series of standalones?) and I try not to do that if I don't enjoy the first two. I usually only read the second book when I didn't enjoy the first one if 1) it's really, really popular or 2) I think the first book shows promise. I didn't really have either of those as an issue this time. I think my curiosity was piqued because I'm a sucker for fairy tale retellings, and these were very easy to read. I mean, something about them had to be engaging for me to read them so quickly, right?
Out of the five or so I read, These Wicked Revels had THE BEST title....and the worst story.
These are novellas, and standalone ones at that, so I wasn't expecting too much in world building. Aka, I didn't drive down the hammer of I-Expect-My-Worlds-To-Be-Built-Dammit too harshly, so I won't even go into that. However, I DO expect strong characters. Did I get strong characters? I mean...I felt some strong feelings, I guess.
I'll get to Evaline in a minute, but let me start with Will, aka the most unlikable hero I've read all year. Will has ALL the qualities I look for in a man: Brash, prone to anger, blames his anger on EVERYONE EXCEPT HIMSELF, instantly judges a girl he's attracted to, and looks for ways to win her over to met out revenge. And not in a star-crossed way, but in a I'm-a-grump way. I mean, this guy could have looked as smoldering as Kylo Ren (ask me in a decade if I still use Kylo Ren as the epitome of smoldering lol because I outgrew my Hayden Christensen infatuation a decade ago) and I STILL would have hated him. There was zero character development, and he STILL won the girl. AND THEN HE BECAME A KING LIKE WTF. He was NEVER kind to Evaline, and did not warrant any of her desire. Evaline, on the other hand? Self-centered, vapid, not great. I have nothing to say about her because she's extremely boring and serves to drive the plot along.
Also, outside of unlikable characters, I should ***SPOILER WARNING*** warn you about this sex tree. It essentially steals sexual energy but is enjoyable to be caught in? It's really confusing. There's this weird ***trigger???*** anal "knot" on it that you have to sit on and honestly I'm cringing just writing that. I'm not here to shame kinks, but why a tree????? Like I kept picturing those dancing trees from Disney's Silly Symphony, Flowers and Trees but mixed in with the tree that blows at you on the Whispy Woods level in Super Smash Bros. All in all, not a very erotic image.
This one i actually enjoyed more than the beauty and the beast retelling. It was sexy, engaging, and had a super labyrinth vibe. The pacing was better than the first also. Can't wait to read the rest.
Obtained Kindle edition when offered free on Amazon.
This book has one of the most glorious covers I've ever seen. It's wasted on a shallow f**k book.
The writing is decent through the first half of this "hot" retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, but then it deteriorates into graphic f*cking. I didn't much care for Evaline, especially when she got all cozy with the King of the Revels. Thought the King himself was pretty damn slimy, but hero Will wasn't much better. Seriously skimmed the last 50 pages of this 150 page short novel.
Wasn't that keen on the second book, was a bit silly... unbelievable and certain situations could have been rectified much easier...... if the king new his daughters were going into faery or suspected it, why not give them something iron to begin with???? and why didn't will just send his sister to Evaline instead of the old women giving away the firstborn to become king. I have given 2 stars because i love faerie books.
I honestly didn't care who she ended up with or what she did as long as she was away from the mother and the king. I did like Will and the freedom they ended up with.

Second in the series, and just as clever as the first. When I'm reading a spin on an old fairy-tale, or looking for something spicy, I have discovered that I cannot sacrifice smart for salaciousness, nor story-telling for a quick tingle-fix. With this series, I don't have to!
Excellent twist on the old "dancing princesses" tale, nicely steamy, and more than a little goosebump-inducing, with added poignancy. One of the (many) things I appreciate about Foxglove's writing is that the harshness of life isn't sugared-up. And while people may be bowed down under suffering, they manage to exert themselves to get above it. The characters's choices may occasionally disappoint us along the way, but much the same as we often disappoint ourselves. That's the magic of her writing - it's such a fairy-tale setting, but the people inhabiting the setting feel solid and real.
There are definitely writers I wish I could emulate - far too many to enumerate in a review. When it comes to this type of story, with sexy bits heating things up and yet fitting in with plot and character without a jolt, I wish I could do as well as this.
I have to admit this novel is certainly entertaining, especially with the trickster magic of fairy kings and the unknown lifestyle that is spread out in front of a very innocent and unknowing princess. If your enjoy fairy tales of any description you will definitely find this extremely hard to put down, the world that young Evaline grows up in is a rather austere and full of nothing except rules and making sure she lived up to everyone else's expectations. As young teenagers dreaming of what we want from life is often very different to how our lives turn out, but going through the dismal regimented days that Evaline has to deal with makes you wander how she didn't automatically buck the system, but like things this world and its kingdom is ruled by laws and guidelines oh and their king so however she may have felt her choices were not taken with any thought of being serious so Evangeline just followed the rules doing what she believed she was meant to do. But beneath the serious quiet facades a strong young woman was trying to desperately find ways around being so trapped and this is where the fun and excitement comes from this storyline as we follow Evangeline through a world of very different and diverse situations as she learns about herself, love and what it means to be alive. A very entertaining story that is as much a fairytale as it is a steamy piece of intense descriptive writing, but either way that you look at this world of naughty fairies and their lives you cannot help but smile at all the possibilities open to the right people if they choose to join the fun. A little bit naughty with a lot of spice including plenty of reality just to keep things in balance but definitely a great read if you want something reasonably light and full of numerous possibilities, I recommend you get your copy now knowing you will be smiling at the end if this tale.
Another good but unusual retelling of the Fairytale about the 12Dancing Princesses although it's technically based on the last princess (Evaline) who everyday follows a certain set of rules placed on her by her Mother the Queen, in that she always has to wear a tight grey dress, have her hair tied back nice and smooth and is not allowed to consort with others or even play music, Here It or attend balls.
That is why on her 18th birthday Evaline is presented with a letter given to her by the King of reveals stating that if she wishes to escape from her dreary life for even a night she can do so by entering the world of the fae as her sisters before her. But as Evaline enjoys her midnight freedom her parents are desperate to find what their daughter does each night. Thus the King makes a decree that if a man, any man can discover why her shoes have been worn through each night he will give the princess to the man through marriage.
This is where will The Cobbler arrives with his magical cape and quick wit with the hope of Revenge takes on the task and discovers at the princess enters a secret portal to the faery realm and dances each night with the king of reveals. But that won't stop Will from trying to seduce the young princess away from the King and instead make her fall in love with him so that he might prove that he has indeed discovered her secret. But what king would give his daughter to a cobbler and after fighting off the king of reveals to win Evaline, fate provides a solution so that the couples can be reunited once again.
WHAT WORKED: Whoa. Wow. What the hell, Ms. Foxglove?!?! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?! Everything. Everything worked in this. Well. Mostly, and I'll get to that. Dirty. Fun. Fantastic. Vivid. What a storyteller this author is!!!
WHAT NEEDED WORK: A couple of places where the pace got a little bit hiccuppy, which I won't spoil because I'm not a prick. But vaguely I'll say the beginning could have been a little faster to jump in to the main event, for me. But I'm an asshole, so don't listen to me.
OVERALL IMPRESSION: LOVE LOVE LOVED THIS!!!!!!!! YES : read this if you like erotic fairy tales told in a refreshing way, by an author with a fantastic skillset to pull you in and forget about the world around you. Ms. Foxglove, Bravo. I can't count how many times I re-read this over the past half year. I'm slowly going through all her catalogue, because erotic fantasy is this woman's super power, and you should all join in and see what I'm talking about.
These set of books are fun light readings with a happily ever after and some steam along the way I enjoyed the first book for what is was and I enjoyed this book, but definitely not as much. I think the concept was not quite as good the Beauty and the Beast retelling partly because I myself was not as familiar with the story. Going into the previous book I knew the character well and what each briefly mentioned development was trying to accomplish. In this book, I didn't have the depth of background and therefore, I couldn't fill in the blanks as easily. As I mentioned before, these books are meant be quick reads and that hit of steam when you don't want to be bogged down in angst. Because of this, the story and characters are straightforward and not a lot is developed in the world. I liked this book, but not as much as the previous. However, for what it is and for that little hit, I'm glad I read it and will continue in on the series with joy.
Fun and sexy reimagined fairytales in an interconnected universe.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
It's not that it's not a good story because it is, the stories in this series are rich and decadent, they magic and plot draw you in, help you to ignore the instalove a bit. The part that I can't get into is the sex scenes, they're so dark they read more like a rape scene than a little kink. They don't really have choice as a part of the scene unless that choice is who gets to rape you and that bothers me, a lot. There's a different between a dark bit of kink and rape and the sex scenes in this series read more like the latter than the former. The woman is literally tied up and impaled on a tree by her nether regions when she loses her virginity, it's not racy or romantic, it's disturbing and it's just not for me.
I’ve never actually read the original of this fairytale, and I do believe I’ve been spoiled into loving this one so much more even if I do. This is the second book in this series I’ve read in a day (if after midnight counts at the day before so far as reading goes—LOL) and my word, I am adicted. The story is heated, yes, but just as with the previous, I love how it is captivating not merely for its sensuality, but for the storyline itself, which keeps moving forward and is intriguing while still remaining simple and enticing. Fantastic. I can’t wait to read more.
I like many of the books in this series. This one...I don’t. But I suspect a large part of my dislike is my general dislike for stories set in the word of the Fae because they tend to make up their own rules and their own concepts. “Fae” is too amorphous. And the concept of the “revels” was too shifting throughout the story. Sometimes it’s glamorous. Sometimes ominous. Often she seems to be ignoring the omninousness in favor of jumping into the next erotic interlude. Unlike some of the other stories (Goblin King, Goblin Cinderella) this particular book felt more about the erotica and less about the story. Which of course in my mind renders the erotica impotent.
This fairy tale for grownups is about Princess Evaline, the youngest of the twelve dancing princesses. For years she has wondered why her sisters always wore holes in their dancing slippers.
As soon as Eva turns 18, she receives her invitation to the Revels in the fairy realm. The King of the Revels dances with her every night and tries to seduce her into staying in the fairy realm.
I liked the premise of the book. I gave three stars because it all fell flat for me. I wanted to feel a part of the story and I had trouble caring about the characters. The story, the world building, the details were all in place but I failed to engage. Maybe it is just me. The author is talented and I will eagerly read the next in this fun series. Hopefully the rest will "click" for me like the first did.
The story of the dancing princesses has never been so delightful! It's a lusty romance, a coming of age story, a suspenseful plot with thrills and scares, and a satisfying conclusion that allows the reader to picture the future as you will. These are stand-alone stories and can be read in any order, but I'm happy to read them as they were written. I'm ready for the next one!
Once again, a fun read. Enjoying this author and her take on classic fairytales.
The part I enjoyed a lot about this book is that when Will became the King of the Revels, he wasn’t miraculously healed or anything (I feel like that’s a big trope in stories, the wounded/scarred/disabled character all of a sudden is healed).
Quick and easy. The story once again flowed well and I didn’t lose interest throughout the story.

We've all heard about or read the story of the princesses dancing the night away, dancing so much that they wore out their slippers each night. These Wicked Revels is a twist on that classic fairy tale. I enjoyed reading it, loved seeing the characters grow and change. Read it yourself and see who saves who.
I enjoyed this as much as the first book in the series. I'm not familiar with the original fairy tale of the twelve dancing princesses, but this was still a fun read for me. I'm a fan of the naughty fairy tales. If you can't get into insta love, practicality porn, smutty fluff, then this is not the series for you.
This was a fun and steamy twist on a fairy tale that I wasn’t very familiar with. I’ll admit that I actually had to look up the classical fairy tale of the 12 Dancing Princesses so I could draw comparisons. I can’t wait to read more of this series of standalone steamy fairy tale twists.
Like her first book, this is a solid retelling with enough changes to make it Foxglove's own story. Similar to almost all fairy tales there is a factor of insta-love which I personally have a love/hate relationship with. Overall I'll read what comes next if another is put out.
Five stars because I felt excited to keep reading to see what unfolds. This is an excellent book and I am really glad I purchased it. It's a wild journey and hopefully there will be a third book.
I really wasn't into this story. I really liked the first book in this series but this book just didn't do it for me. I had to force myself to finish it. I didn't really connect with either character. I just felt they were really whiny and annoying.
I read the first book and wanted to give this one a shot as well. I worried they would be to similar, but was delightful surprised at this. Very much work the read for me!
This book will sweep u off of your feet! I want sure how many twists and turns it was going to take me through but I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one... U will too
I skipped a lot of this book. The main chick was kind of a beezy and the main dude should have split. I mean split because she didnt have a lot of redeeming qualities.
