China has emerged as a member of the elite club of nations who are powerful at both global poles. Polar states are global giants, strong in military, scientific, and economic terms. The concept of a polar great power is relatively unknown in international relations studies; yet China, a rising power globally, is now widely using this term to categorize its aspirations and ...more

Putting the cursor on the fifth rating star brings up the tag "it was amazing." Well, this book earns five stars and it is "amazing." But, it is not for everyone. I think of the frequent comment in reviews of information-dense books that it was "boring" or "repetitious." Some will view this book that way. Reading the last chapter, a concise summary of the research may be an alternative for such readers. For those who are not put off by intensive research, the book is a gold mine.

A history of the PRC's growth and development in polar affairs matches the story of its development as a great power. Eye opener on what China is doing behind the scenes preparing itself for access to more resources ( such as coal or oil from Antarctica ) and alternative sea routes ( arctic) as it builds on its long term strategy. Somewhat repetitious as she backs up her generalities with facts. Actually the Ch ...more

Very interesting book. Recommended by a speaker during US Army Pacific’s Regional Leaders Development Program: US Strategic Positioning in the Arctic. I will take a lot of highlights away from this book. Best description of the first, second, and third island chains I have read. The book not only lays out the history and current state of play in the polar regions but also charts China’s way ahead.
