Quinn no longer knows up from down, left from right, as the rules of the world blur. He can’t even trust the ache in his heart. Is it for the love he lost or a love trying to form?
As the X Variable closes in, the fabric of reality begins to unravel. There is only one thing Quinn knows for sure,Thirteen is in danger.
No longer being able to tell who is friend and who is foe, Quinn comes to realize he can either save himself or the Other who says he loves Quinn ... Thirteen.
Georgia born and bred, I am an artist, a writer, and a general pain in the ass. I spend most of my days working on my next book or bettering my art. Writing is my identity and I love every minute of it. It's work, lots of work (sometimes I work 12+ hours a day and I never get a vacation) but I don't regret doing it. I currently share my house with a myriad of dogs, a few cats, a saltwater aquarium filled with coral and fish, as well as my partner who's great at giving hugs when the day's been rough. And of course, my editor and PA, who helps me keep life reasonably organized. At least so I won't walk out the door without wearing pants.
First off - this can't be read as a standalone. One needs at least to read part 1 Thirteen: Part One but I really recommend to start with Seven (which is btw the best one in the series so far). Also, I recommend to read them back to back because otherwise I for one would have completely lost the plot. In the following I'm talking about both parts because I can't even remember where part 2 started.
Well... I'm a bit a loss how to rate this book. I like the author's style and it's quite clear how much hard work went into this book. The world building is super creative and elaborate but...
Ok, so here is what I think. This book definitely deserves some tough love content editing. The underlying idea that the Others manipulate the world on a quantum level is original and well thought out but - honestly, it goes way over my head and at some point I just didn't care anymore.
The plot twists and turns and twists again enough to give me whiplash and in consequence the book is simply too long. And it says something if I say a book is too long. I could have done happily without half of the turnabouts Nine does. Instead I would have liked to see a more thorough exploration of the developing relationship between Thirteen and Quinn. I can't believe I'm saying that because those who know me know that I'm an action/adventure reader rather than a romance reader but really, the pace left me breathless and the love story lukewarm. It didn't help that Quinn basically keeps denying his attraction to Thirteen for at least most of part one. Also, his wallowing in guilt and self loathing did not help either. I couldn't really bring myself to care much for him. I also thought that the GFY was an odd choice but that might just be me.
As for Thirteen - I genuinly liked Seven from the first book in the series but Thirteen remains a bit of a cipher for me which is largely due to the frantic pace of the book. There was very little space for him to develop a real personality.
So, IMHO there is a very good book in there (as is to be expected from this author) but as it is, it would benefit from a generous application of red ink.
My biggest regret with reading this book is that I did not read Part 1 and Part 2 together. I read Part 1 in May of 2016. A little of a year later Part 2 was released. I forgot so much of what I had read. The refresher would have been nice.
Quinn and Thirteen have a very complicated beginning to a very complex relationship. Thirteen needs a Center to keep him grounded. It’s all part of his Other makeup. Quinn has been living a life that’s not really his own. He’s a counterfeiter who works for some very bad people. Thirteen is being pursued by another Other who will wholly consume everything that he is. Thirteen will simply be no more. There’s not too much Quinn can do about this. He’s in big time denial that he’s anything other than straight. Thirteen’s Other abilities have Quinn questioning everything, especially his lusty thoughts about Thirteen. Quinn wants to believe that if Thirteen can read his mind then he certainly has the ability to plant those carnal thoughts.
There is a huge chunk of this booked based on Adrienne’s own version of quantum physics. From the very beginning readers are warned that it is the author’s version and that it was bent for the purpose of this world to work. I’m not a science person. I would have been lost even if it was all factual. I was however lost in it. I truly believe that in the creation of this world that much of Quinn’s and Thirteens romance was lost to making the book believable. Part Two of Thirteen is lengthy. For a book of this length (even in two parts) I feel that there should have been more romance between Quinn and Thirteen.
The page time with Five, Twenty-Three, and Nine gives readers something to look forward to with other Others Project books. There will be more of course. I thoroughly enjoyed Seven. While there were many disappointments with Thirteen I’m still pleased that I read it and look forward to more books in this world.
Wow. My heart broke over and over again in this. Adored Quinn in this one, significantly less annoyed than in the first. Thirteen was sweet, of course, but given how we met him in Seven ,I think I was expecting a bit more from him and their relationship. There was just a lot of other stuff happening, I wanted more moments of just "them". Zero is ...well, my hero, okay? Cat was fucking obnoxious. Lord, get rid of her. I would still love to read more about these guys and the others, would be down to return this world anytime!
★★★★☆ ~ 4 Stars ~ Awesome sauce I will confess I was lost a few times, so many characters, explanations of talents but this is such a reread-worthy series. I had to reread Part One because it had been over a year, I probably should have reread Seven too, for that matter!
Chase and Thirteen are both being chased and captured by bad guys, Nine's trying to keep it together and find a safe space for the Others and Five is trying to keep Twenty-Three from melting down. And this all is going on while the X Variable that Thirteen brought back when he was in the void of the helicopter crash who's on the hunt to possess Thirteen and wreaking a path of destruction in his quest. There was a lot going on. I can't even begin to summarize it! You'll need to read it for yourself.
Note: As you may know, the release of Part Two was delayed. Author had some personal issues to be dealt with and apologizes profusely. As a bonus, we get two excerpts at the end, one between Nine/Twenty-Three and a second between Four and Twenty-Three. Which of course whetted my appetite Four, which apparently is the final book in the series. Can't wait :)
One of the best MM paranormal series ever. Well thought out and lovable characters and exceptional world building. I normally hate world building, but this author didn't make this so complicated that you become bored.
The reason for the markdowns on points is because it needs a better proof reader. (Adrienne, text me) and because of the near year between each book. Believe me, you will crave more immediately.
These books are set in modern times in the world we live in now, but with some very fantastical differences. Human clones were grown in an artificial womb with unique, impossible abilities like stopping time, teleportation, telekinesis, mind reading, and the ability to alter memories and control human behavior. All of these clones or "Others" are gay, to prevent their DNA from mixing into the general population.
In the previous books we learned that the Others use of their ability eventually leads to their death. The only way to prevent illness and eventual death is for the Other to find their "Center," a rare individual whose brainwaves compliment the Other and whose close proximity heals the Other (while getting them all hot and bothered).
These books have so much action, an incredible story line, and are SO hot. I devoured the first three books only to find out that the next one is not out yet. Highly recommended if you like longer books with an intricate, convoluted story line (but not difficult to follow) that have aspects of both science fiction and fantasy.
Wow. Just...wow. If this author ever breaks one if his books into two parts, do NOT start reading the first before the second is released! I don't think I could've managed to make it through the year between part one and part two being available. I know some people are mad that it will be another year before the next book comes out, but even though everything isn't completely resolved, this one isn't really a cliffhanger. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Nine and Twenty Three and the rest of the Others! I might go back and re-read Seven while I'm waiting...
The further we go into this series, and the more I feel as though I haven't a single clue what's going to happen with the following stories...of which Four is up next [I think], but obviously no idea when.
These stories cannot be read as stand-alones, the series is far too involved, complicated and downright complex for that I'm afraid. How Adrienne has meshed everything together is beyond clever, and all I will say is that Thirteen and Quinn are still together at the end of this story, Five and Twenty Three are still around and a very helpful Fox Terrier named Zero is taking care of nasty business.
My final thought....who the hell is Toys, and what danger does he/she/it pose to the Others??
I love Ms. Wilder's books, but this was my least favorite so far. I'm not even going to try to summarize this book, I wouldn't know where to start. I'll just state some facts/opinions. Pros: 1. Highly original plot 2. Very interesting story 3. Obviously a lot of though went into the technical aspect of this book 4. It's more of an UF than a romance. 5. Zero, the dog (comic relief) Cons: 1. Not enough time spent on developing the relationship between the MCs 2. MC Quinn does way too much whining about his former relationship 3. EDITING, EDITING, EDITING issues...typos, incomplete sentences, and a lot of material that could have been trimmed down 4. I have a headache from reading all the quantum physic theories
So.... this has the potential of being a very, very good book. Just a bit of work is needed. It's worth reading if you enjoyed SEVEN and the really original UF story line.
This series has fried my brain - quantum physics is complex at the best of times and put that in a series this intense and my brain fritzed out! How this author can weave so much together so well in each and every book, that just keeps building, I have no idea. But she is one of the master story tellers, so I'm not questioning it - just enjoying it. I, super pleased there are three books available in the series. I could hunker down and get stuck in. If I had to wait for months between books, I'm not sure i could have easily picked up the thread again. How cool is Zero? Love that little guy (or not so little guy - ask Twitchy). Quinn drove me up the wall for book 2 and 3, until he finally got his act together and put his big boy pants on. Pure irritation until then. Thirteen is a kind, warm, gorgeous human who has been through more than anyone should ever have - have all the time in the world for him, and looking forward to meeting him again in future books. Keep em coming AW
This is the second part of book 2 of The Other's Project .
This book was a ROLLER COASTER RIDE and I still don't know what actually happened with Nine / Darth Nine/Satan cause Nine did some things in this book that I did not approve of . Anyway another character that drove me to almost drink me some liquor eggnog was Quinn on my God I have never read such whiney man baby before . All the dang angst like to drive me coo coo God Quinn was one of the most frustrating characters I've EVER READ I still don't understand haft of what went down but I did like this love story between Quinn and thirteenth although Quinn really tried my patians at time . Still all in all I really enjoyed this book .
Hm... withholding my rating because it is a piece of a longer series that feels too incomplete to rate until it ends.
I really enjoyed "Seven," the first book, but having got this far, would not have started the series... or would possibly have stopped reading at that first book, which felt more self-contained, than continuing with books 2 & 3 before series completion.
I did skim a LOT of this one. I do love me some science talk and world building, but would have preferred less of that and more relationship building. Thirteen's story, told over two books, was far less satisfying on that level than Seven's.
God! This series keeps getting better and better! Quinn and Thirteen At the 66% mark I was a puddle of goo due to Quinn finally realizing some things!! It was romantic and sweet!! Very interesting and really awesome world building. It's non stop action and I couldn't put the book down. The story flowed so well it was hard to not get caught up in their world! Such a talented author! Love it and will impatiently wait for the next one!
Despite some formatting oddness and some typos, and a couple of possible editing puzzles (or reader error), I enjoyed how this saga of Thirteen and Quinn resolved. I don't want to get into particulars, except for holy crap, Zero.
In this ebook there are a couple of teasers tacked on, interesting but, except for the promise of another book, unnecessary in my opinion. But I did read them, so take that as you will.
No.... this was on par with part 1 which I was disappointed with. Sigh... guess I’m going to have to give up on this series. And that pains me because I love Adrienne Wilder. I just don’t love this series at all. Except for the first book which was epic! Which is why this was such a let down. Sigh..... =[[
This book was a bit of a let down for me. Too much quantum physics talks plus some tightening the middle part and removing some repetitive information would have made it more thrilling. And the ending felt anticlimactic. Maybe the next book will be more interesting. I'd love to see Five and Twenty Three finding their Centers.
This is not the last book in the series. Just so you know. The story is still awesome and engaging and I want to know what's going to happen.
What not so awesome are the rape scenes that come one after the other. Not to mention they are depicted as not even really that bad??? Really??? And after reading the reviews nobody seems to be bothered by this???
This a great series and while it was a bit of wait it was worth it because this is a great continuation in an addictive series. It was dark, sad, action packed, and filled with sciencey words and concepts I pretended to grasp and a great romance that FINALLY came together. I love these characters and these intertwined relationships and how much they are willing to sacrifice for each other. I can't wait for 4!
Loved it......and Adrienne Wilder has indicated there will be a couple more books in this series--yay! There is so much more to be learned about The Others; what does the future hold for them? Have to wait until next year to find out what happens next............
Good ending, but I didn't really get the obsession the X Variable had with possessing Thirteen's body... it seems highly unusual for something that didn't exist until Thirteen created it. Also, how did it git a body?!?
Wow I felt like this story went on forever... Quinn was so darn annoying... I liked 13,5 23, and of course 9... I am looking forward to more from these characters... I want all of them to finally get their centers and HEA...
But fair warning- I was not team Glenn for the first 1/3 of the book. He’s kind of a selfish jerk with a fear of being gay that I personally was not a fan of ... but it gets better! Cannot wait for the next book especially after the post epilogue snippets.
Good story, well written but really science fi ! I skimmed a bit of the scientific talk and the sex scene.. Still a bit too many of them. I like the books.. I didn't love them.
