HELP. i finally got around to the novel the beginning of this month and i just finished rereading it again the same month lol. i have a soft spot for pat and pran and i'm missing bad buddy (thai drama adaptation) so much. 🥺

───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────

although the novel version of bad buddy is much more angsty than the thai drama, i admit i loved the novel for different reasons. i'm honestly weak for emotional stories that tug at your heartstrings and, despite this novel being toxic in the beginning and all, i couldn't help but still love it. i won't compare it to the drama bc they have pretty huge differences with a few similarities here and there.

anywayss - i love patpran. i love ohmnanon. that is all. ♡

ps. i 100% recommend watching bad buddy, btw! it's my current obsession. :')

⠀⠀⠀Bad Buddy The series:

i've read others novels that became adaptations and i have to say i'm glad that p'aof (bad buddy's director) is changing lots of things here and there because it's in the little things, but also in the big things like toxic parents etc, that it's making a difference! if the series were true to the novel it would not be that good as it is now!

anyways, i didn't disliked it but i think we've passed the moment of writing and reading about the same things over and over! the book spent an absurd amount of time discussing the terrible drama of patpran's parents but in the end it was....bullshit! i wanted more of patpran romance.

The series made everything better except for poor Wai, and I think Pran was reserved even in his POV, I did not know when he fell in love..

★★★★☆ // This is the first Thai BL novel that I read. I was first attracted to this story when I watched the trailer to its upcoming TV series adaptation starring Ohm Pawat and Nanon Korapat, to be written and directed by P’Aof. Filming kept getting delayed because of the pandemic, but I am pretty sure they’ve started a bit. It was a really interesting story to me, the rivals-to-lovers plot with a twist of fake-hating each other. Luckily, someone did an unofficial English translation.

I was not expecting to get sucked into the world of Pat and Pran, two college boys who were conditioned to always fight each other because their families are long-time rivals. But the truth is, they are just keeping up appearances and they are actually friends beneath it all. Pat would often come over to Pran’s dorm room, asking him to tend to his wounds. Pat would sleep over at Pran’s and Pran would complain a lot especially because Pat is messy. But really, Pran loves having Pat around.

The trailer made it seem like this was a lighthearted campus romcom, but it was actually pretty intense and has its fair share of (good) angst. It goes from a passionate discovery of their feelings in college and keeping up a relationship until their parents discovered them. It was a full-blown Romeo and Juliet like situation, where the fact that they are rivals is a bigger factor to their parents’ disapproval more than the fact that they are gay. It was quite a journey too for Pat and Pran to earn their parents’ approval because it meant working to mend the old wounds from the past that caused their families’ rivalry.

I loved this so much because it really made me invested in Pat and Pran’s love for each other. They have very different personalities, Pat is usually hot-headed and emotion-driven while Pran is more rational yet stubborn. It was a joy to see their characters grow through each page, both of them influencing each other in the best way possible. Pat became more responsible and calm because of Pran. Meanwhile, Pran became more expressive and caring, and learned to love himself more too, because of Pat. Each time they were set apart by their parents, you just know that they will find their way back to each other because that’s how strong and enduring their love is.

Lastly, they both worked hard in their own ways to earn their parents’ approval and what I love about this is that they never, for once, relented to their families’ prejudices. Their love is not wrong, and it will not change. In BLs, there is a trouble of characters only saying stuff like “I’m not gay, I only like [this specific guy].” But here in Behind the Scenes, Pat and Pran were specific to claim the label even more so on Pat’s case: “I am not saying that father doesn’t love me. I understand him much better. But the fact that I am gay does not cause any imperfections, mom.” Both of them would always make sure to tell their parents that they love each other no matter what, and they can only be truly happy if they are together and not set apart.

Maybe my only qualm about the story is that the earlier part had a lot of violence. Pat and Pran were involved in their respective groups in college who constantly get into fist fights. I hope we see less of that in the series.

Anyway, this review has been so long already and yet it is not enough to capture just how lovely Behind The Scenes is and I am eager to see OhmNanon acting as PatPran, and how things will be translated onscreen (in P’Aof, I trust!). I hope the novel gets an official English translation so I could re-read an edited version of it and that more people will get to read Pat and Pran’s story. This is one of my favourite reads this year.
“Our love is in full bloom, proving that it is not wrong. Either in front or behind the scene, our love is the same. The surrounding sound is loud, but I can only hear my heart beating, and I am confident that this time, it is the same rhythm as Pran’s.”

i read the novel bc I was having bad patpran withdrawals after bad buddy ended and I loved the series so much that there’s just no way for me to not compare it to its source material. so before I get into the novel and the numbers of reasons i disliked it a lot - let’s get that out of the way.

the novel vs. the adaption

the novel and the series may tell the same story and have the same basic set-up – to quote the show it’s a story about “two people who can’t be friends to two people who can’t be just friends” or, romeo and juliet but make it a gay romcom - but they tell it in a very different way.

the series uses the potential for more in the set-up a little more, puts a few twists on familiar and well-loved tropes. they make use of the rivals to friends to lovers aspect and play around with the fake enemies trope. they added a lot of things - the drama in high school, the pining, ink’s entire character, the bet - and it all came together so well. it really gave more depth to patpran’s relationship in my opinion. (also they added inkpaa and I owe the series my life for that.)

the novel, on the other hand, solely focuses on the forbidden love aspect of it and doesn’t add any subplots or distractions to it. pat and pran fall in love fairly quickly and from there, it’s them trying to navigate their relationship around the feud of their families. there’s nothing wrong with that per se, but it wasn’t even a particularly well executed take on forbidden love so it really fell flat to me.
the two differ greatly when it comes to the plot and actual events of the story, but they also differ greatly when it comes to the characters. this isn’t my patpran guys. this isn’t my pran, and most importantly, this isn’t MY pat. i can vaguely see the parallels in their dynamic if I squint a little (a lot), but they really aren’t too similar. reading the novel did absolutely nothing to fill the patpran shaped hole in my heart the series left.

so really, the novel and the series are two very different things. basically separate entities in my head. and I have never been more thankful for an adaption to stray so far away from its novel than I am now. i liked the series much more and I could go on and on abt all the reasons its an absolute masterpiece, but we are here to talk abt the novel so... lets go!

it’s super uncomfortable when it comes to consent.

I’ve seen a few thai “bl” shows so I know that is sadly very normalized in the genre and I’m guessing it’s the same for books. I haven’t seen anyone properly talk about this in regards to the novel yet besides mentioning that it’s “toxic” at the beginning. But it’s not only the beginning and just saying it’s toxic doesn’t cover it in my opinion.

their first kiss is forceful and definitely not consensual. it doesn’t end there, though – basically all their moments of intimacy, pat does without pran’s consent, by force and by actively going against pran telling him to stop or resisting againt him OR pat begs pran into doing things with him until he relents which also is not consent. and do not get me started on the weird, predatory thoughts pat has at times. it was really fucked up and I feel like it should be addressed.

other weird and uncomfortable things

what toxic does cover imo is

I know this is another common trope in the “bl” genre but I despise the wife/husband thing sm and behind the scenes was a bad offender in this regard as well. (the conversation abt how its weird in bad buddy makes me even happier knowing how heavily the book features it)

also the last chapter…

the first half is fucking boring and repetitive.

they spend most of the first half of the book in pran’s room having the same conversation over and over and over and over again. like, we get it. pat doesn’t shower. pran should go to sleep and not overwork himself. we got it the first time around, we got it the second time around and there really wasn’t any need to keep repeating it again and again. a change of pace or scenery or literally just a change of topic in their conversations would’ve been very nice.

also, that repetitiveness really didn’t help with their bland relationship dynamic and barely existing personalities. things we know about pat: he is dirty + behaves like a literal child. things we know about pran: he likes things clean and overworks himself. okay now I am overexaggerating a little bit but they really don’t feel like fully fleshed out characters. also, in case it didn’t shine through yet, I hate novel pat passionately.

the family drama

I’ll give the novel some points for this. I liked how it actually showed what was at stake when it came to their relationship. and was honestly my favourite scene from the entire book. the author was onto something there because that actually made me emotional. probably only because I’m so emotionally attached to patpran (and yes, ) but still, I’ll give them some credit here.

justice for wai

now, this is the one thing, the one character, that I liked better in the novel than in the series. wai. hes my least favourite character in the series (besides the parents obviously) but in the book? I love him. he quickly turned into my favourite character.

(meanwhile, my favourite character from the show – pat – is my least favourite character in the novel. and yes, he even ranks below all the parents.)

everything surrounding wai is the biggest crime bad buddy committed but knowing how amazing he was in the novel makes it even worse. but, I mean, i’d readily sacrifice wai’s character any time in return for all the good and amazing changes we got in bad buddy. still, he deserved better.

tl;dr

cant recommend the novel at all, its not worth your time. just (re)watch bad buddy.

i read the official english translation on Meb. it was my first time to buy a translated thai novel and so far i'm not disappointed. it seems like it will have quite a few differences from the series (currently at ep 4 as i'm writing this review) and i'm excited to see where they will diverge.

plot-wise, the first half of the book starts like a typical Y-novel with the enemies-to-lovers trope. but the second half of the book turns around and smacks you all of a sudden. the characters deal with family issues, homophobia, personal freedom, forgiveness, and of course, love.

character-wise, the two main leads are not that special. i wish their characterisations were fleshed out more. my favourite character in this book is actually Par, she's so mature for her age. everyone needs a Par in their life.

i did not expect that this story would go beyond graduation, but it's so nice to get a glimpse of youngsterhood to adulthood in one plot in a Y novel. overall, the book is not as good as my other online novel discoveries, but it has a refreshing quality that is enough to hold your attention. the male leads' relationship development is cute and healthy; it's just the world around them that really tests it.

It's a Romeo and Juliet story but BL but no one dies. Yes people, let's not bury the gays.

I also love that the casts on the live adaptation (Bad Buddy) were very on point. I can really imagine Ohm and Nanon as Pat and Pran! Ahhh you don't know how crazy I am with Bad Buddy. I wish everyday is Friday.

I know this is the original, but somehow it reads like bad Bad Buddy fanfiction.

Just watch the show, it’s so much better, this isn’t worth the time or the money. And it’s not even good for spoilers because it’s so much different from the show.

I adore Bad Buddy the series, so when I found out it came from a book, I had to get my hands on it.
This story is nothing like the series though. It was okay, a BL like many many others, complete with all the classic toxic tropes.

The ebook is terribly overpriced considering the very low quality of the translation and editing.

this is the first negative review i have ever written, but some things need to be said...
for people who like the bad buddy series and want to read the original novel: just dont.... if you are coming here with expectations that the series gave you, the novel will most likely disappoint you because it is very different and, i dare even say, not really a pleasant read with quite a lot of toxic tropes that i dont even see serving any excusable nor understandable purpose in the plot later on. i had high hopes for this novel since the series is so wonderful, but i was disappointed by the plot and by the characters so much that im dropping this novel after ten chapters because it was not getting any better nor more interesting :/

ADAPTED TO BAD BUDDY SERIES (2021):
https://youtu.be/7I12Q6CQWLY

When i knew GMMTC 2021 : The New Decade begins released all the pilot series trailer in December 3rd, 2020 I'm really excited saw Bad Buddy Series into the list. I also write down all the series that i wanna watch in 2021.

Since Bad Buddy Series is adapted from the Novel titles "Behind The Scenes" i'm curious to read the books and yeah for the comparison between the novel versus the series is.

I love how the novel written with Pat and Pran's POV in every chapter so we can know how their thought about the same situation. However i think the conflict in the novel is succesfully makes me anxious since i never saw it is coming especially for Pat and don't forget the toxicity of their parents just makes me wanna angry in the same time. Can they just leave PatPran alone together :'(
thanksfully the ending is really makes some justice.. I love how the way author makes Pat become an wise and grown up young man and PatPran's love is getting stronger too!

The things that i'm still feeling uneasy is the term of husband/wife label in this novel. I prefer to say they are partner in a relationship. Thanks to the series that this label being changed into "boyfriend"

In the end you can read the novel and watch the series in the same time. Since i think they are completes each other. I love how healthy their relationship in the series and i love how in the end their relationship progress status is in the Novel.. You can enjoy both as the fans!

Thankyou Google Playstore!

Really good novel and I don’t usually like y thai novels this much.
The novel is divided in chapters so that the story is narrated by both Pran and Pat. I feel like Ohm and Nanon were the best possible choices, they really are like Pat and Pran from the novel. Even though the story is slightly different: Pran was never transferred, they never make the bet etc...
What I really liked was how the story was split in two. Them, falling in love and starting a relationship, and then their parents discovering their secret relationship and the consequences of that...
It’s a more mature, dramatic story than in the TV show (I’m writing two days after the airing of episode 7). I cried with them, some chapters were really hard to read. But totally worth it! The happy ending felt rewarding.
It was also good to get more insight in the psychology of the characters. Even though the story differs, p’Aof stayed true to the original Pat and Pran.

Great story 100 % reccomend it

This is the best translation for a bl novel that I've seen. The story was very different from the drama because the relationship between the two main characters have a different relationship from the start. I did however have some issues with some of the formatting I don't know if it's because I'm too used to how English novels are formatted or what but I wish the they had put a bit more space when the scene was changing because I would be reading about Pran being in his room and then in the very next sentence he would be at school or something so it was a little confusing sometimes.

I have read the full book including 2 special chapters I was looking for the other special chapters in English if anyone knows where I can find it please let me know. This book was a rollercoaster though it had so strong emotions that sometimes it was unbearable to go on. The story is on point don't get deceived by the cheerful exuberance of the book in the begining because it is so much more. It is one of the best best bl stories I have come across so far wish to read more such amazing ones in the future.

4,5*(tempted to put 5 even though I know it isn’t perfect) I was not expecting this book to be so good and affect me this much omg it’s been so long since I had a physical and emotional reaction to a book. I literally forgot how to breathe. I can’t even explain but the tears stinging my eyes and the chills running down my spine say enough. pat is one of my favourite characters ever written and the love radiates from the pages <3

Wkdkwks

Lloré mares, oigan.

Before I read this book, I watched the TV series first. The story is normal, but the acting of ohm and nanon made it been excellent. Then I read the original novels. The story almost the same as the TV series. Two boys grown up together, but their parents hate each other. Those kind of hatred might pass to the young generation. Luckily the Pat and Pran always fight with each other not because they think they are enemies, just for they’re in different faculties. And these two faculties always fight for all kinds reasons. In that situation, they are still falling love with each other. But finally their parents find the truth and they are separated. Luckily, they have a happy ending. Many people said it looks like BL version of Romeo and Juliet, yes, in some part. The obstacles in their love are both from external forces, not from their love. Thanks for different ages, Pat and Pran can get happy ending.
I love the book so much, and just finished second time reading.

This book is a good one. It actually teaches you the importance of communication and how you should act, think, and move forward. I almost had no complaint for this book.

Maybe the things that bothers me may seem boring or too much, but i really hope this book could be better in some aspects. Some parts from the story still lack of something.

I don't like the "who's the wife" when it's clearly a relationship between men. No woman involved. Also some fight scenes or dialog is hard to understand because i don't really know who's doing this or who's saying that.

But i do love the pain. The overall story seems to make sense or reasonable. Even though maybe there's actually a better solution for a specific problem but they didn't really think about it.

That's all i could think about right now. Really, no complaint at all. Everything is good. I can't compare this story with the series version. It's almost a complete different story and approaches. I love both version.

HELLO HELLO

I AM SO GLAD I decided to read the novel of a series that I LOVE so much because WOW.

I actually expected the novel to be similar with the series, with it being somehow lighthearted and with how everything went, but joke’s on me 😭😭

This made me cry, I swear. I felt so bad for both Pat and Pran here. I was so frustrated for both of them 😭😭 and if this were any other day I would’ve stopped reading it halfway through. But i was enjoying the drama this time so I survived.

Despite that, I LOVED reading their internal dialogues. Like PAT IS CRAZILY HEAD OVER HEELS he is for pran here moreso from the series so that was fun to read. And PRAN’S ULTRA MEGA SOFTNESS FOR PAT like bro 😭 how they describe each other legit made me feel weak.. I love their love sm :(

Their bickering was top tier. The lines were so good, it all went through to my heart… Just.. all about this is so good. :( idc if that’s biased <33

Great, I wanted to read it because, a series called Bad buddy is being released and it looks like it will be very good, I hope and in the Series they put some scenes from the book so that it is all very fun, the book looks good, the plot, the characters , the environment in which it occurs, the controversy that the families have, and without knowing that their children will not separate such an illogical fight, it is seen that everything will turn within pure love, and new feelings will develop, but everything is for them to take love with that intensity.
