Young Davie loves his Border Collie, Bonnie, but a new dog is in town, a big German Shepherd named Juno, who kills Bonnie. Juno's owner gives Davie a puppy from Juno but he doesn't want it. His mother names the dog, Laddie. As Laddie is rejected by Davie, he runs away to Grannoch Moor. And then the sheep killings begin. Everyone suspects Laddie though no one gets an actual look at the sheep killer, who they begin to call the “ghost” of Grannoch Moor. Davie feels guilty about how he treated the dog and he find it hard to believe that Laddie is the killer. But now the hunt is on by the community, and Laddie is the target. If they can find him.
A pretty good story, well written. It was fairly easy to see how things would work out but it was fun getting there. A book for kids, probably 8 to 14 or so.

So this is not a book about a ghost, it’s a book about a dog. Which is clearly why it’s been on my book shelf my whole life and I never read it before. I will say it is a nice story, with a dramatic ending, and I was not traumatized in the reading. So I definitely recommend this for young readers who like dogs.

I read this book as a child and always listed it as one of my favorites. It was out of print, but I searched out a used version. I was hesitant to read it for fear it would fall short of my memories of the book, but I'm elated to say it did not. It was very well written even as a children's book. Excellent book for any age.
