Australian Doctor Casey Tyler has been looking for an escape from the memories of her past for a long time so when she takes a 3 month contract working for International Medical Assist the void that's present in her soul is telling her that this is what she needs to fill it. Flying from one side of the world to another she is faced with a brutal war zone and an unexpected savior in more ways than one.
Nathanial King has seen his share of brutality and war during his 10 years service in the marines, so when a favor is called in by the CEO of IMA to protect a civilian medical team at an American base overseas he finds that his instinct to protect takes over his logic to turn it down, only he didn't know that a head strong, mouthy Aussie doctor was going to give him more than he ever bargained for.
Only when a dangerous threat forces Nate to take Casey out of the game and back to his home in the USA he suddenly realizes that he not only has to protect her from the threat on her life but Casey Tyler needs to be protected from herself. As he gets deeper into her soul he unearths something more darker than he has ever seen before and now he fears he may need to protect himself from the need to own her body and soul.
A beautiful powerful story of pain, forgiveness and love.

Freedom is the debut novel by J. Grayland. A work colleague of Dr Casey Tyler told a company called Overseas Medical Assist who are looking forward to hiring civilian medical personnel for short-term contracts. For Dr Casey Tyler this opportunity came at the same time. However, on her first day, Casey clashed with her assign bodyguard Nathanial King. Readers of Freedom will continue to follow the twist and turns in the story to see what would happen to Nathanial and Casey.

I enjoyed reading Freedom and if this is the calibre of J. Grayland first book, I will certainly looking forward to her next book. I love the way J. Grayland portrayed her characters especially Nathanial who had a dominate personality but underneath was a softy. J. Grayland ensured that the readers of Freedom would be glued to their seat until the last page of this book is read. Also, Freedom is well written by J. Grayland and provides a lovely description of life on an army base for civilian medical personnel during military conflicts.

Readers of Freedom will learn the consequences of Parents neglect, indifference, sexual abuse and how it affects the child later in life. Also, readers of Freedom with discovered how to run an international security business.

I recommend this book.

A Tale of Two Halves

I began my 2019 reading journey with this debut effort by the author. My selection of this book was completely and deliberately random. The interesting cover may have had some influence on me.

How I dislike being critical. This is a young new author and I respect the fact that she accomplished writing the book. At the same time, I did pay for the privilege of the read. I offer my observations in service to all who love to read and even those who will and do write romance.

This book read like the second half was written by a completely different person. The first part was a slow grind. There is miniscule to no heat in the meeting between Nate, the hero and Casey, the heroine, as well as the subsequent time they spent in the isolated military outpost where Casey was hired to work as a surgeon. Nate and his company were hired essentially as security for the civilian medical team.

The characters were generally unrelatable. I get the impression this author has the more difficult time penning a relatable male than female. There is some more sexually explicit material in the second half of the book, but nothing that will scandalize you. Yet, isn't that what romance readers secretly, or not so secretly, want... to be scandalized or at very least moved?

How did I ever read over 350 pages? Despite its shortcomings, the storyline was inventive and the connection between Casey and Nate began to approach normal levels of tension, desire and connection that lovers of the romance novel crave.

The long and the short of it is...this author needs not a good, but a great, editor...not Just a proofreader. Paradoxically, she needs to write scenes of passion with a lot less editing and more sensuality.

The book ends abruptly on a weird HFN note. While the second book is set up well with respect to the story, with all the great books being written and my TBR in the thousands, I hesitate. Which author will I meet in the second book... the one who wrote the first half or the second half of this book?

This is J. Grayland's debut book. Talk about coming out of the gate strong. I am having a fangirl moment since I read this book. Suspense is the genre of this book. Dr. Cassey Taylor is an Australian surgeon. Trying to fill the whole in her life and move on from her past Cassey tries one last time to explain to her BFF Flynn that going to work for the IMA into a war zone might be just what she needs. Part of Casseys contract with IMA says that she will help with the small village medical needs. As Cassey and the King Security guys are in town they have company. Thank goodness Nate follows his gut feelings and hides Cassey in the truck. The men are looking for her but why?
Why would some one her in a war zone. She didn't know anyone. Why is Nate King so damn mad at her all the time?
Hell he had been made at her since she arrived. When more research on the threat has been discovered by another of the King Security mean it is now urgent to get Cassey out of there.
How is Nate going to convince her she is safer in Portland with him than going back to her home in Australia. Of course lie!
YOU HAVE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK! I am not yelling at you I am excited for you to read Freedom. The title of this book is more than just a title. The title is everything.

*Copy graciously provided by author in exchange for an honest review*

I'm writing this review keeping in mind that this is a 1st book for this self published author.

It took me a few chapters to get into this story but I was intrigued by the main character Casey and the journey she was undertaking by signing up for an international medical organization. On this journey, she meets Nate who is in charge of her security. The book is told from her POV and his.

The characters are well fleshed out and I enjoyed following their emotional evolution. Nate, being the alpha that he is, doesn't want anything to do with relationships, love or commitment. Casey has such a tainted past that she can't imagine herself ever being loved by anyone.

Truth be told, the first few chapters were rough to read. The conversations didn't flow very well, the writing felt forced and I thought it was all in bad need of a good editor. But as I kept reading, that changed and I became really invested in these characters. The writing really improved and flowed and there are some poignant exchanges between them as they find each other. I may have needed a tissue or two.

It's worth reading. I had originally put this book in my "to read" because I loved the cover and the blurb seemed right up my reading alley. I was not disappointed at all.

This is a standalone and there's no cliffhanger but there are a few untied bits here and there that might be interesting to explore in a 2nd installment.

This is a hard one to rate. I really disliked the hero. He was meant to come across as really alpha but instead came across as an arrogant, immature jerk!
I really disliked the scene where he kisses OW to make heroine jealous. What is he 12? Sulking because she doesn't fall instantly into bed with him.
Then when he finds out about her past does he support her. Nope has a temper tantrum and leaves to stay with his brother abandoning the heroine. What a looser.

The heroine starts off really interesting. A surgeon trying to do something that makes her feel like she is making a difference. Then she sort of has a personality change and turns into a dumb, sex toy who doesn't have much personality or brains. While i completely feel for her over everything she went through. I wanted more. This is a women who survived it all and put herself through medical school. Instead all we get is her hanging around waiting for hero and becoming a live in sex toy.

I think this author has potential. This story was unfortunately a miss for me. I am sure other readers might enjoy.

How can one truly be free?

Casey Tyler is a doctor. She also has a troubling past. Which she tries to hide. Nate King owns an International Security Firm.

Nate is there to protect Casey at a Combat hospital in a war zone. When Rebels come to kidnap her he goes into Alpha mode and does everything he can to protect her including taking her home....to his country.

There are many things that Casey and Nate must face to achieve their freedom. Avoid an International kidnapping scheme, her past, his need to protect her.

Will Casey and Nate be able to navigate this myriad of problems? To find out you have to read this engaging page turner, that has you "Awww"ing, saying ouch and maybe has your heart racing. I can't wait to read what happens next!!

I was hooked from the very beginning! When Dr. Casey Tyler joins the IMA and decides to leave her home in Sydney to help wounded soldiers in the war zone, she also leaves the hidden secrets of her past.
Nathaniel King is an ex marine who enjoys the rush of the insecurity of the unknown, living on the edge of life and death to make him feel human. He represents King Securities who is at the war zone to protect the surgeons and nurses.
When Rebels try to kidnap Casey, his alpha protective mode kicks in and ends up taking her back to his country to protect her.
This beautifully written story of a scarred  woman determined to keep her secrets locked away until Nathan slowly chips away the pain and they both fight for the freedom they both deserve.
I loved this book! Can't wait for next installment.

Freedom. Wow. What a FANTASTIC read!
The book was relaxing & captivating to say the least. For one that doesn't take the time to read often I found it very easy to understand & the novel absorbed me very quickly. Coming to an end of each chapter I was enticed to continue on until my eyes began to fail me! Who would have known this was Author, J Graylands debate novel!!?
As a busy mum of 3 that rarely takes time for herself, Freedom made sure that I did just that! I can only hope there is sequel on its way! I am already missing reading the accounts of Nate & Casey!

My first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. An Australian female doctor with a hard past decides to go into a combat zone to help with medical care with a private organization. There she meets an Amercian who is providing security and is none too happy to see a blonde female in this area, as women are stolen and sold. Especially those that look like her. She doesn't like his alpha behavior and over protectiveness but after an attempt on taking her has her thinking maybe hes right. From there we watch their push and pull and the fire that ignites between them as he goes through great lengths to protect her. Along the way, they both fall hard for one another. I loved the characters and the story. Well written and exciting. Can't wait to read book 2!

I'm indifferent to the characters and the plot.

Casey started out interesting and full of promise, I love how the story started. How she wanted to make a difference in the world and how she went to help wounded soldiers - very brave. But there is a shroud over her in regards to her past and when you find out about it, you understand her more and why she is so non-descript and boring.

Then there is Nate. A Jerk. He ruined the book for me. He wasn't an Alpha he was a dick. Typical macho man, who when he doesn't get his way he turns into a child or a uses his brute force to try and force it to work. Um no thanks.

The book was rife with problems. I sometimes had to reread to see who was talking, because spacing was missing or there were missing quotes. Maybe I need to update my Kindle Unlimited copy?

This could be a great story but the book is badly in need of an edit or rather a proofreading. Although I generally can ignore small errors in favour of plot and characterisation, the constant mistakes from missing full stops, misuse of speech marks, and points of view which were very haphazard took away from the atmosphere. There is real potential here but small things like not understanding speech markers and the obvious repetition or confusion this can evoke can interrupt reader focus. I am hoping the author takes note and re-publishes with those corrections as I would love to give a higher rating and would be happy to re-read

One of, if not the, worst written book I have ever encountered. I have always assumed an author would at least have basic writing skills when endeavoring to write a book. I guess I was wrong. This author has no knowledge of first/third person, punctuation, capitalization, rhythm, etc. And the characters and plot were sappy.
