Narwhal's obsession with his new favorite food leads him into hijinks and hilarity in the third book of this all-star early graphic novel series!
Narwhal and Jelly are back and Narwhal has a new obsession . . . peanut butter! He's so obsessed he even wants to change his name to . . . that's right . . . Peanut Butter! Ever-sensible Jelly isn't so sure that's the best idea, but is all for Narwhal trying new things (instead of just eating waffles all the time, no matter how delicious waffles are).
In this third book, Narwhal and Jelly star in three new stories about trying new things, favorite foods and accepting who we are. Always funny and never didactic, this underwater duo charms again through their powerful combination of positive thinking, imagination and joyfulness.
Ben Clanton is the author/illustrator of the Narwhal and Jelly series as well as a number of other books as IT CAME IN THE MAIL, MO'S MUSTACHE, and TATER TALES.
In this story, Narwhal has some serious dietary issues. Jelly tries to help but only makes things worse. On the upside, Jelly now has a nickname, one that I share.
What a cute book. I adore the Narwal and Jellyfish characters. This book tackles picky eaters who will not even try a new food. It teaches them to try it in a cute way that would make any child tempted. The Illustrations are adorable !
Peanut Butter and Jelly is the third book in the Narwhal and Jelly series and what a series it is. It will make you laugh-out-loud and giggle uncontrollably.
In book three there are four stories, three about Narwhal and his friend Jelly the Jellyfish and one the continuation of their superhero story – ‘Super Waffle and Strawberry Sidekick’.
The book has been beautifully illustrated and all the stories are amazing. Amongst the stories you will also find factual information, I never knew that Tiger sharks eat anything and I mean anything!
This collection of stories will have children laughing hysterically and enjoying every word. They are perfect for reluctant readers as children need to enjoy what they are reading and they will certainly enjoy the Narwhal and Jelly books.
The hijinks continue in book 3. What will happen when Narwhal switches from waffles to peanut butter 24/7? Jelly sticks by him as usual. Keep those Narwhal and Jelly Adventures coming!
Further adventures of Narwhal and his friend Jelly. #3 in the series discusses identity and food preferences - a topic that is always on the minds of some of my group as there are food explorers and Picky Nickys herein. Written in graphic format, and divided by chapters. My readers love this book (and series) - we choose who is going to be narrator, who is Narwhal, who is Jelly, and who will cover all the other non-designated speakers, and each reading session they trade off, so this functions like a script. They do fun accents and voices. Tons of fun!
We are glad there are more of these in this series and look forward to more to come.
3.5 stars. Narwhal does not do things by halves. Whether it's waffles, peanut butter, or names. Jelly introduces Narwhal to peanut butter, and that sets Narwhal off on a peanut butter kick. These two friends are cute together, and though this book didn't have me laughing out loud like book 2, I still found this installment amusing.
Ahoy there mateys! I be the first to admit that I am not really a graphic novel or comics person. While I like art, I do not have a visual mind at all. For example, me film friends laugh good-naturedly at me all the time when when I watch tv or movies with them because I miss the visual cues of storytelling. This means the tv or movie must be paused so the can explain the plot points I literally didn’t see. I need words! Dialogue! Something! But the First Mate and I had donated books to a local library sale and had time to kill. So of course we chose to remain at the library while time went by. The most avaliable place to sit ended up being next to the juvenile graphic novel section. I had heard good things about this series and saw it so naturally I picked it up. After liking the second book, I went back to not really caing about narwhal because there wasn’t a fun story here. Narwhal discovers peanut butter. The end. Arrrr!
I received this as an ARC ebook. That did not sway my opinion at all, I already loved Narwhal and Jelly. :)
This is the third book in the Narwhal and Jelly series of graphic novels. To give you an idea of grade level, the first book in the series was around a Guided Reading level M which makes it an end of 2nd grade beginning of 3rd grade level book for an average reader.
If you aren't familiar with this series, these are some of the cutest juvenile graphic novels you'll run into. This third volume is setup with 3 short stories, a fact page and a comic strip within the book purportedly created by the characters. All of these parts are related but can also be read as their own short stories if necessary. I feel that you are also safe reading these out of order. This is not a series where you must read the first one to know what is happening in the third.
They are silly and cute, the illustrations are bright and uncluttered. I work in a library and recommend the series often, this one is yet another great addition to the series.
This is the third in a series by Ben Clanton featuring a very cute narwhal and jellyfish. Set up graphic-novel style, this is easy reading, suitable for young elementary-age readers. I was mildly amused by this little tale of a narwhal who loves eating waffles to the exclusion of all other foods until the jellyfish introduces him to peanut butter; however, I wasn’t impressed by it. Because of how insubstantial and uninspired this is, I got the feeling Clanton was milking a cash cow. The story isn’t so much a story as it is a drawn-out joke. What this has going for it are the illustrations, simple and easy to replicate, but adorable nonetheless.
NOTE: I received this as an advanced reader copy from LibraryThing in March 2018.
These books are so cute! I still like the second one the best but this one is great. Great for all age groups and interests. Especially good if you have a child who is a picky eater.
*This review was verbally created by an 8-year-old boy, and transcribed by me*
I really liked that Narwhal is all about waffles, and Jelly tried to get him to try a peanut butter cookie. Then that’s all Narwhal cared about, jars of peanut butter.
I like the front cover where Narwhal was x’ed out and the title renamed to Peanut Butter and Jelly!
I like that the beginning pages* have Narwhal and the end pages* have Jelly!
As a parent, I loved watching my child’s enthusiasm at Narwhal’s excitement over waffles and then peanut butter. And his questions about the facts . . . definitely brought out that curiosity.
I don’t have much to say about this one, other than the usual it was an adorable story.
It’s odd but I wish Super Waffle and Strawberry Sidekick — the book inside the book — made a little more sense when it came to the overall story. I mean, in a way it does but it’s also weirdly connected.
I know there’s one more in the series, but I really hope there’s plenty more adventures to come.
*The end pages design on both front and back inside covers.
I encountered this book, it was a miracle, at Library #1 when I visited it yesterday (check my blog to see what books I got). I decided to read it there and boy this was fun. I had such a big laugh at how Narwhal is so focussed on one kind of thing (in this one either waffles or peanut butter) and I loved seeing him discover new foods. (he should really eat more varied). I loved their friendship, and I loved their conversations. I am allergic to peanuts so no thank you to the cookies. I will just keep to eating waffles. ;) I loved the art in this one, especially the facial expressions are great and I loved how they drew that Narwhal loved something very much. This one definitely made me laugh and that was just what I needed after 2 stressful days.
For months, a young friend of mine has been begging me to read a Narwhal and Jelly book. He laughs so hard just thinking about the series that I had to give it a try.
Now I see why he loves that goofy Narwhal soooooo much. That wacky whale is just right to appeal to a young reader's sense of fun. Even at my advanced age, I loved the absurdity, the hyperbole and the illustrations and the friendship between Narwhal and Jelly. I also loved the way that Clanton snuck in a few sea-facts amidst the hilarity. I'll definitely be recommending this to other young readers I work with.
Loved the font, loved the images, loved the mini comic in the middle of the book, loved Narwhal and Jelly (both very lovable), loved the page of facts halfway through, loved that the facts were given in a fun and memorable way, Overall - ridiculously adorable, a slam dunk of a series! Loved it!
Still funny and adorable. Narwhal and Jelly's conversation about all the foods Narwhal hasn't tried is sure to entertain readers of all ages. Narwhal's obsession with the peanut butter was delightful and there were several fun surprises. Readers of the first two installments won't be disappointed.
Narwhal is easy going and super positive. Jelly the Jellyfish worries and is anxious about most things. Narwhal is irrepressible in his optimism no matter the circumstances. He is a positive on Jelly and together they are wonderful friends.
