A simply beautiful collection of short stories from Petrakis. Largely set in Chicago amongst blue-collar Greek-American immigrants, Petrakis' stories range from sorrowful to bittersweet to laugh-out-loud funny, sometimes even within the same story. He shows a particular fondness for unrequited love and guilt-filled grief, but writes eloquently without even becoming maudlin or overwrought. I’m glad I read the 27 stories in this collection by one of Chicago’s finest fiction writers. Actually, I thought of him after reading some of his non-fiction pieces in the Sun-Times, and remembered I had this anthology on the shelf. I’ve been writing more short stories lately, and reading Petrakis reminds me of the kind of writer I always aspired to be. His prose is straight but poetical when necessary, concise but descriptive.
