My thoughts swirled and flickered not unlike the symbols of the virus that had flown through my palm moments ago. The government cryptologists claimed that human knowledge of Vaían ciphers wasn’t sufficient to find the hexagrammaton. The Vaían alphabet consisted of one hundred and thirteen symbols, enabling two and a half billion six-letter combinations. But only millions of them translated some sequences of the virus into executable programs. Without knowing the engines’ functions, there was no

Updated review: 3.5 stars for this mindbending SF novelette, free here on Tor.com. It's amazing how this story made so much more sense to me when I read it a second time! The facts are all there in the story, they just got lost in the confusion of my first read. It's a pretty serious mental workout. Here's my review, first posted on Fantasy Literature. If it sounds like I was working out my understanding of this story while I was writing this review ... well, I was.

Hexagrammaton is an ambitious

Hard SciFi, very hefty for a short story, with impressive world building.

Something for people who love mathematics and cryptology.

The author lost me somewhere during one of the lengthy info dumps. I skimmed a little, which is probably not a good sign in a short story. Quite clever, but it wasn‘t really my cup of tea, 2.5 stars.

I have no clue how to describe this story. There seems to be space, aliens, and a revolution. There's also a virus and cryptology. I have no clue what happened or what was going on. The writing was very well done and was the reason I kept reading, but the writing is also a hindrance for this story because it moves along with no cohesive flow and the plot is flying out the window- it's all over the place. Anyway, if you like scifi, you'll probably like this.

Not quite sure what to make of this story – it has a non-linear flow and challenged me considerably. However the core idea of language/virus that changes reality is interesting enough, layer upon layer of multiple truths. If that is what I think it is. Or I might be completely off-base.

What a clever and interesting story! I recommend it to everybody with a background in linear algebra, geometry, and cryptography. I will not say more on this to avoid spoiling it.
In the aftermath of the first alien contact, the narrator moved from the Juppiter colonies back to Earth. His new job is to guide cleared visitors into the deep buried bellies of the remaining alien ships. His newest client, a young woman named Janita, proves to be a member of the resistance carrying in her body what

Available to read on Tor.com. Reminiscent in my mind of Octavia Butler's works in Bloodchild and Other Stories, with flesh-out alien technology (linguistic/symbolic genius!) and purpose, and a considered approach to the moral, identity, political, and physical fears and complications of coexisting with an alien species. The ending is something I still have to think about, but the story overall is beautiful and full of intrigue.

(second try. GR's clumsy interface ate the first. Grr)

Impressively dense story. It will take another reading to really figure it out. Could have used more unpacking in the story itself, I think. And it is a translation.

See Tadiana's detailed review, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
-- which also has the direct story link.

Better save this now....

This went completely over my head to the point that I'm really not sure what happened. Arrival for math nerds, I guess?
