Ms. Just One More Book (Kris Miller)

Deanie's father made a solemn promise, if Deanie couldn't walk, she would learn to ride. And ride she did, straight on to becoming a champion within competitions. Born with strength and determination -- and a father who taught her anything was possible -- Deanie displays unrivaled courage in defying the odds ...more

My Life at Sweetbrier is about a young girl diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The doctors told her parents she would never walk. Little did the doctors know about Deanie's father's determination, and he told the doctor where he could go with that opinion. I like that line in the book. My Life at Sweetbrier is filled with Love, Determination, Strength, and Perseverance. A loving family's purpose of helping their baby to overcome her obstacles and reach for the stars. Which she did!!! She not only wa ...more

“You never know what you can do until you try.”

My Life at Sweetbrier
Cover Art: Excellent

True and wonderful story! The doctors told little Deanie’s parents that she would never walk again. Oh, but her dad would not accept that prognosis! Believe it or not, he wants to try out a new therapeutic treatment… putting her on a little pony! Her little heart beat so fast, as she rode round and round the pony ring, listening to the steady clip-clop of the little hooves. Dad worked so hard with his little disabled child, pushing her, watching her fall

First i have to say: To have a daddy as Deanie has, is priceless. Unfortunately not all daddies would do what Deanie's daddy did.
So, Deanie's book is the amazing story what he achieved as Deanie was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
Growing up with this disease, it's not easy. But with such a help of her Dad?
Deanie can do everything, as she did and fulfilled her dream: riding horses, her love, even winning competitions.
How could she not have that dream, living on a farm with horses.

It was quite a jo

Excellent read!

This is a wonderful story about a girl following her dreams! Growing up, Deanie loved to riding horses. It was difficult at first as she was born with cerebral palsy, but her father helped her to become an awesome rider. Deanie began to participate in competition and she became a champion rider! I recommend it to horse lovers everywhere!

Sweetbrier is a marvellously inspirational book. The author narrates the story of her life from birth to her teenage years.
Horses were her inspiration in those formative years. She experienced pessimism and negativity that her disability would be a barrier to her aspirations to become a successful horsewoman.
Her determination, supported by her close family, particularly her father, drove her to overcome every hurdle that was put in her path.
A wonderful story that will give courage and drive to y

I am a bit old for the age group this book is written for, however I did find the story interesting. The author shows how with determination and hard work you can achieve your dreams. This is a great book for young ones.

An excellent story that brings home some vital lessons. Never give up. You may need to devise different ways to do something physically challenging, but never stop trying. There is also another lesson, one for parents. Encourage your children and help them find those other ways so they will have the confidence to grow strong even with a disability.

This children’s chapter book is truly an inspiration. The author was born with a disability that impacted her ability to walk. As a young girl growing up on a horse farm, she wished that she could ride and jump and win horse shows. Her Daddy, being her biggest fan, helped her overcome her fears and various horses in her life improved her self-confidence. With a lot of practice and perseverance, she made her dreams come true. This book teaches children about following their dreams no matter what ...more

Children’s book author Deanie Humphrys-Dunne recently contacted me about reading and reviewing her latest release, My Life at Sweetbrier A Life Changed by Horses. Now this book is quite different to her other children’s fiction horse books. My Life at Sweetbrier tells Deanie’s story with horses as she grew up.

Her life started out in an unexpected way, with having difficulty learning to walk. Eventually the doctors concluded that she wouldn’t be able to walk, due to having cerebral palsy.

A Book About True Grit…

Most of us, parent or not, can’t imagine having a child that didn’t crawl until three-years of age, much less one who failed to walk until age four. But that was the early life of author Deanie Humphrys-Dunne, who, delivered two months premature, weighed only three pounds at birth. It took years before doctors finally were able to diagnose her condition: cerebral palsy. Fortunately for her, Ms. Humphrys-Dunne’s father, “a determined person” (that’s an understatement!) made

My Life At Sweetbrier tells the story of a young lady who, despite her disability (she suffers from cerebral palsy which makes walking hard), achieves her dream to be with horses. As a young child her condition interferes with her physical milestones, from being able to walk herself to getting up when she inevitably falls.

Most people would call this process a 'journey' but I prefer to call it a strength and determination to do what you want to do. Yes, it's a strength to continue on, never givin

Do you love horses and stories filled with courage and inspiration? Young, Deanie Humphreys was born a preemie with the debilitating disease called cerebral palsy. At birth, a portion of her brain was damaged. The result was that Deanie had difficulty walking. Now, for most kids, this would be enough to limit their physical activities for life. But Deanie’s father made a huge decision that changed her life. He said, “I’m going to teach you to ride, and you’ll be fine.”

That single decision change

Life is tough, sometimes. But, Deanie Humphrys-Dunne proves to readers in My Life at Sweetbrier, that if they persevere, anything is possible. The author encourages children to set goals and reach for their dreams, as one day they may even beat the odds, like she did. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three, doctors were convinced that Deanie would never be able to walk. Deanie's Daddy refused to accept their opinion and shortly after, made the decision that changed Deanie's life, for ...more

A pretty motivational book that I personally really enjoyed. There's something that mingles with the words when a writer picks up the pen to write her own story- that magic made this book special. I've loved and ridden horses since I was eight years old, so the pain and yearnings that Deanie experienced felt very real to me. There's just something about riding a horse that makes you feel on top of the world. And I really respect the author's perseverance towards achieving this goal, especially w ...more

I really enjoyed this book and I think it is special... it brings to life Deanie's wonderful upbringing on a horse farm called Sweetbrier, in Connecticut in the US. Although Deanie's upbringing sounds idyllic, Deanie experienced great physical challenges and overcame these in a sport that is demanding, requires strength, bravery, and through developing unique partnerships with her beloved horses. Her doctors prognosis when she was a young girl wasn't good... many families would try and accept th ...more

My Life at Sweetbrier, is author, Deanie Dunne's recounting of life at her childhood home–a horse farm in Connecticut. Deanie was born with cerebral palsy. For most people, that would be enough to deter them from ever riding a horse. But not for Deanie. Thanks to her father's "can do" philosophy, Deanie became a skilled rider, winning many riding competitions. It wasn't without challenges, though. Deanie shares the adversities she had to overcome and offers encouragement for others to do the sam ...more

The feeling I had from reading this book was the same feeling I had all those many years ago when I read Little House on the Prairie (minus passages about Indians)—and that’s a good thing!

The author speaks to us as a friend would. She confides in us the difficulties in maintaining a “can do” attitude, which is actually very encouraging. It’s helpful to know that even people who achieve greatness—as Deanie Dunne has—have had moments of self-doubt.

Hers is an inspiring story that kids (and grown-up

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne is a champion. Deanie won numerous Championship Horse Shows and nowadays continues to win hearts by sharing her experience and encouraging the young to aim high.

Had little Deanie Humphrys been satisfied with just observing her sisters and other girls partake in horse show competitions, no one would have faulted her. After all, Deanie was diagnosed early in life with cerebral palsy and was not even expected to walk. Yet the remarkable Deanie defied her doctors and their pred

A heartfelt, inspiring story, My Life at Sweetbrier moved me, the reader, in a big way. Knowing that the story was based on the author's real-life experience, I expected a tale full of deep emotions but as I turned the pages I felt as though she and I were experiencing those emotions together, as though I was right beside her along her journey.
