Most people have a favorite season and preferred time of year.  Some enjoy the colorful leaves of autumn while others long for the fluffy, white snow which accompanies winter.  For me, summer is the best time of year.  The arrival of summer is truly magical.  The days become longer and once dormant life explodes back into action.  Flowers bloom and green grass grows as the dull and dreary landscape is transformed into a rich and vibrant one.  Thoughts turn to leisure at the beach or even new and ...more

Whenever I pick up a Hoot N Holler book, I know I’m in for some fun and Terror in Boring Town doesn’t disappoint. Friends Sam and Rex live in Boring Town which, as the name implies, is very boring. But when a pair of strangers arrive that Sam and Rex are convinced are criminals, the plot quickly heats up. This is a fun mystery akin to the Boxcar Children or the Hardy Boys and I enjoyed every second of it! Can’t wait to see what mischief Sam and Rex get into next!

According to Sam, nothing exciting ever happens in his humdrum hometown of Boring, Maryland. Sam's best friend, Rex, however, imagines every stranger who stops in their small town is either a spy or criminal... or both. When Rex suggests the town's newest temporary residents, the Smiths, have evil intentions, Sam chalks it up to Rex just being Rex.
But when the boys run into Mr. Smith acting suspiciously in the post office, his mysterious package and evil stare convince Sam that Rex may actuall

As an author of middle grade fiction myself, I find it informative to read other books for this age group. I came across Hoot N. Holler when they popped into my Twitter feed.

Terror in Boring Town is a lot of fun. A light quick read filled with realistic dialogue and a real sense of community and family. In fact, it mainly works as a “slice-of-life” story of rural America more than a Hardy Boys-esk mystery, though that element of the story is fine too.

Recommended for the reluctant young reader! T
Terror in Boring Town (A Sam and Rex Adventure, #1) by Hoot N. Holler was a fun, entertaining read, that had that old school The Hardy Boys feeling.

My first read from this author, I went in with an open mind and channeled my inner child. That wasn't hard, cause, well, I'm a 5 year old trapped in a 30 year old body.. jk, jk.. maybe... In all seriousness, this book was as I said, fun, super engaging, and perfect if you have a young reader that likes quik humor, extra characters and a mystery that

Much to my mother's chagrin, I was an adventure seeking tom boy as a kid. My friends and I would go “treasure hunting” in abandoned lots and one day I was so dirty that I had to be hosed off in the backyard before I could enter the house. As I was reading this book I was reminded of my youthful misadventures and I hadn't thought about those times in a very long time. For me, that is a great benefit of reading, to go to a place you haven't been before or to return to a memory you haven't visited ...more

Great read for older children as well as adults. Suspense and mystery are the events in this not so Boring Town. Let's not forget the comedy and laughter that takes place in Boring Town.

Hoot N. Holler are a classic team for writing this book. You will fall in love with Sam and Rex. As like every 12 year old we know. Will find themselves getting into trouble, but not so much they can't get out of it. When the boys try to co

Terror in Boring Town is a fantastic children’s chapter book, aimed at children 9 -12 years old. It is a mystery/adventure, with humour, danger, a little drama, and is lots of fun.
We meet Sam Snead and Rex Coak, who have just begun their summer vacation. Sam is dreading the long summer break, because there isn’t ever anything to do in their Boring home town. Nothing interesting every happened. Rex on the other hand, is the more upbeat and optimistic of the two. He sees adventure in the si

I can't hardly believe after all the books I've read in my life that this book actually had me so hooked I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. All I could think about was that I must buy a copy of this book for each of my grandchildren that I know would enjoy it, and I plan to do that at each of their birthdays.

This proves to me that it doesn't matter what age group a book is I am totally in love with detective type

Terror in Boring Town (A Sam and Rex Adventure Book 1) by Hoot N. Holler is a five star novel. I a, secretly a teen novel junkie. I teach math to middle schoolers, so I know what they like and what they don’t. A lot of books adults try to write for them are hokey but this one was great. I felt like Sam and Rex were totally relatable and enjoyed it even as an adult. There was terror and suspense and drama between friends. What more can you ask for? I also loved that the town name is Boring Town, ...more

So first off I thought that this was a great children’s story! I don’t have any children in the target audience so I read and reviewed it as a teacher. I really enjoyed it and have no doubt that children in the age range would really enjoy this story and I also think that it would be great in engaging boys to read too! The plot was exciting and the characters were well thought out. The illustrations were bright and colourful and really added something

Terror in Boring Town by Hoot N Holler is the first book in the Sam and Rex Adventure Series. I am always on the lookout for a book to catch the attention of a reluctant reader. This adventure will catch their attention. Sam and Rex living in a boring town but don't shy away from crazy adventures. The characters are fun and are easy to relate to for children. They catch on to some new people on time and hatch a plan to confirm their suspicions. I enjoyed this book and look forward to introducing ...more

So I’ll start with the obvious, this is a kids book generated for the preteens to young teen age group. I believe this is a great story for kids, I believe they would stay interested in finishing the story. The story takes place during the summer. So obviously the school is out and by the title Sam and Rex live in a boring town. Their minds are pretty active in this book making it a mystery they have to solve. There are many funny moments in the book making it even more enjoyable for kids in my ...more

A perfect mystery for kids today. Terror in Boring Town is a fun story story about two boys trying to get the scoop on some strangers that have come to their town. When there is a mystery and two boys are trying to get creative with ideas to prove the strangers are criminals makes a great story. The story has a great plot to keep the kids interested in the story. I would definitely recommend this book for entertainment and possible a book to read for summer time reading.

I am NOT the intended demographic for this story HOWEVER; I very much enjoyed it and actually identified with a few of the "older folks". Mr. Patel, for example, because he's always sneaking the kids candy when Mrs. Patel isn't looking. That's the kind of Aunt I am - so I get it.

This is a delightful story that I would absolutely give to my nieces and nephews to read. I have a few that don't like to read and I think this one might change their mind. It's a delightful adventure of 2 young boys and

A children’s chapter book that I enjoyed from cover to cover. It is about two boys who live in a boring town until a couple of strangers arrive in town. What will happen when Sam and Rex go on a mission to prove that these strangers are criminals? These two boys are creative when trying to get their proof and even life threatening. This is a great story and I would not hesitate to give it to our children. Twists and turns brought down to a child’s level. I highly recommend this book for children

I was kindly sent a copy of this book by the author Hoot N. Holler in exchange for an honest review.

This is a well-written children's book that would be enjoyed by the whole family. I read parts of it to my 4-year-old daughter and she enjoyed it so much she asked me to start reading it again from the beginning.

The book is packed full of excitement as you follow 12-year-old best friends, Rex and Sam, during their summer holidays. You get to meet a lot of entertaining characters along the way, the

This is a crazy story full of hi-jinks and shenanigans. Sam and Rex are out of school for the summer. Looking for adventure in their Boring town. There is silly food concoctions and Bingo nights. Not to mention parades with Lawn Chair Marching Dads! (That one cracked me up.) Add in a couple of strangers and an overactive imagination makes this a cute detective story.

I enjoyed these boys can’t imagine what they coul
