This did NOTHING for me except for all the exruciating PAIN just from reading it. The best parts of this novelette are its cover (the 1 star comes for it) and the fact it's mercifully short. Otherwise, it's an assault at my nerves, (which aren't lately in the fine shape that they used to be in once). This is probably the first time ever for me not to have enjoyed even a happy end!

The plot had precious little to do with Paris. The city was mostly a backstage prop against which this unimaginably silly whining was happening. This whatever could have been happening in Australia, that is how much the city was reflected in the story.

The modern part was lame. If ever there was much ado about nothing, this is it. I'm not sure what I expected from this one. Certainly not science or a great plotline. Both of which are conveniently missing. Along with brains. And common sense. And intimacy. A residue of feelings, some emotional connection would have been welcome, anyway.

Instead, what we get here is a gal, who has some doubts on her wedding elopement long since done and who feels herself shadowing doubts, which seem to be shared by everyone in her surroundings. She's like *oh, I can't wrap my head round marriage*. Why exactly is this an issue in a love story? If there are doubts, it is NOT a love story. It's a thriller. And this one does not thrill at all. If one experiences doubts, why the freak do they even bother to participate in this doubtful affair of marriage? True love is unconventional. It's rara avis. A lot rarer than elopements.

The 20xx wife is selfish to the extreme. She literally comes across as surprised she's not alone on a honeymoon trip. Personally, I felt surprised at that as well: some poor bastard who didn't know better dared to get married with her. Miraculous!

And don't get me started on the poor hubby's business meetings. I mean, how exactly does one's bad time management become an issue for a honeymoon? If the bride is jobless (or maybe does some stuff not imposing on her time at all) why can't she accomodate the grooms' time issues? Here career is like this:
Q:
‘I … I’m sort of between jobs at the moment. I finished my degree and did a bit of office work, a bit of waitressing. The usual middle-class-girl stuff. I suppose I haven’t quite worked out what to do either.’ (c) So... this is our protagonist. The one unhappy about her hubby's encroaching career. What does she thinks pays for Paris honeymoons? Would she have preferred a loan?

The 19xx part considered a mirroring problem. Equally lamey. The only slight improvement on this disaster was the painting and the way it brought together different eras (the 2nd star is precisely for this). But by the time the story went to the painting, I already hated it so much that I really could not make myself to bother with its ending. I repeat, there are no problems depicted here, no issues, nothing at all. It's just some heroes being stupid, which is not something I look for in a love novelette. Or anywhere else. Ever.

Q:
And now Liv stands, shivering ‒ in the summer dress she had bought because it was the exact shade of her eyes and she’d thought he would notice ‒ as the skies grow grey and a fine spit starts. (c)
Q:
Some passions were too great not to act upon. (c)
Q:
When I wake up with him I feel like I’m in the pages of some glossy magazine. Everything is just so grown-up. (c) Getting married just to grow up. Now, that's a true recipe for a disaster.
Q:
He has linen bed sheets, for God’s sake. Actual linen sheets.’ She blew another smoke ring. ‘Made of linen.’
‘Yeah. And who’s going to end up ironing those linen sheets?’
‘Not me. He has a cleaner. He says he doesn’t need me to do that stuff. He’s worked out I’m a rubbish housekeeper. In fact, he wants me to think about doing a postgrad.’
‘A postgrad?’
‘He says I’m too smart not to do something with my life.’
‘Shows how long he’s known you.’ ... (c) Illuminating. For freak's sake! I already feel sorry about the sorry bastard of a husband who gets a ... who? ... for a wife. What exactly is she doing with her time? Killing it slowly?
Q:
‘A wife.’ Jasmine grinned at her slyly. ‘Oh, my God. Wifey.’
‘Don’t. It still freaks me out a bit.’ (c) Why on earth does someone who clearly 'has not wrapped their head round being married' get married?
Q:
... the concierge gives her the look reserved for the kind of woman whose husband takes business meetings on their honeymoon... (c) Neurosis identified. Gawd. People generally don't give a fuck as to who goes to what meetings when. Full of herself, this character is.
Q:
‘I don’t want a bath.’ She does. She’s thought of nothing else the whole, long, miserable walk back. (c) Instead of getting into a steamy bath, with her hubby, she gets cranky? Ouch.
Q:
She’d seen him on the telephone and just the simple fact that she’d known, immediately, it was a work call had skewed her fragile sense of goodwill. (c) Yeah, he should have been calling a bordello or a bunch of mistresses. That would have been much better. Right? *blinks innocently*
Q:
Why are you doing this? she yells at herself silently. Why are you sabotaging your own honeymoon? (c) Let me tell you a secret. It's not YOUR OWN. Honeymoon, like good sex, is an endeavour for at least two involved.
Q:
‘You’re on honeymoon?’ He says it without drama, but his expression is so bemused, his sudden pity so inadequately disguised, that she can’t bear it. She sees Wife, out of sorts, turning away defeatedly, a lifetime of other people’s faint embarrassment. Oh, you’re married? Your husband is where? (c) Ok, so much drama. For what? The guy went to a business meeting not to widen his sexual experiences in a bordello. Marriage is not about being connected at the hip. Grrr!
Q:
We can just … . We can just pretend like it didn’t happen. We’re both young.’
‘What are you talking about, Liv?’
She looks at him. ‘David – it all became clear as you walked towards me. You brought your plans with you.’(c) Oh, horror!!! He definitely should have brought a bowl of used buttplugs with him, instead of plans. (Yes, ref to 50 shades #3, the buttplug fail)
Q:
‘I don’t understand. This is crazy. I was only gone for a couple of hours.’
‘It’s not about the couple of hours. This was our honeymoon. It’s a template for how we’re going to be.’
‘How is a honeymoon ever a template for a marriage? Most people go and lie on a beach for two weeks, for Christ’s sake. You think that’s how the rest of their lives is going to run?’
‘Don’t twist my words! You know what I mean. (c) Gosh! Of course he doesn't. Even you don't know what YOU mean. Or even IF you mean it.
Q:
‘It’s just this building –’
‘Oh, this building. This building. This fucking building. There’s always going to be a building, isn’t there?’(c) The guy's an architect. It's a shame he's not a gynecologist. This passage would have read a lot better.
Q:
‘I don’t want to be a wife who feels ignored, even on her honeymoon.’
‘I wasn’t ignoring you, Liv –’
‘But you made me feel unimportant, (c) So, it's an ego thing. Can someone please save me and take this book away, right now??? I don't know why I'm torturing myself with it!

UPDATE - 21 May 2018: Finally about to start reading The Girl You Left Behind so I reread this book for some background! And I loved it just as much as I did the first time. 💗

------

I loved this book.

Honeymoon in Paris was a beautiful, wonderful, moving, poignant, and evocative book. (don't mind my list of adjectives) And I felt the pure emotion of it even though it only spanned the length of 70 pages.

Without any lewd descriptions or blushing, giggling female protagonists that are typically seen in love stories, Jojo Moyes has paralleled two soul-deep, heart-wrenching tales of romance that struck a chord in me. Though brief, they are gripping and enchanting, and I fell hopelessly in love with every single one of the characters. I adored Sophie and Édouard's love story more than Liv and David's, because it was desperate and emotional and beautifully written, but both still enthralled me no end.

description

In fact, I was so enchanted by this novella that I bought The Girl You Left Behind immediately after reading it. I'm beyond excited to see these characters again. This is the first book I've read, albeit a short novella, by Jojo Moyes, and I now believe that she has truly lived up to all the hype of her bestseller Me Before You.

Listened to this one on audio, it's just a very short prequel to The Girl You Left Behind. I liked it, there just wasn't that much to it. My impression of Liv was that she was kind of a whiner. I hope she is more likable in the next book. Thanks to Maida for reminding me there was a prequel:))

This novella is written beautifully, marvellous!
I didn't know this one is an introduction to the novel The Girl You Left Behind, and that made me really want to read it!

The novella is like multi-time love stories, one in 2002 and the other in 1912, but both shared the part of the honeymoon in Paris.

In the one in 1912, Edouard and Sophie were newlywed in Paris, Edouard was a talented artist but Sophie was just a normal shop-girl. Edouard fell in love with her and immediately asked to marry her.
Sophie felt jealous of other girls or models Edouard used to draw, they were much more beautiful than her.
She became suspicious of Edouard after what Mimi said to her.. about turning to what he was before marriage, leaving her for other girls for his paintings!
Sophie split out her doubts to Edouard, who left home angry of her.
She went out walking in the streets, time pass until she returned home and found Edouard painting her in the studio. The picture was perfect, but it showed furious, unhappy Sophie.
“I had to paint you because I couldn't bear that you weren't here and it was the only way I could bring you back”.

This story ends here, living happily together.

In the one in 2002, David and Liz are the one newlywed in Paris, but David left Liz for work a couple of times, which made her upset as he didn't care enough about her.
To make time pass until David finished working, She went to a sort of museum, and saw the picture "Wife, out of sorts", By Edouard Lefevre. Liz felt the sad unhappy woman in the picture was just like her. Liz decided to tell David that she couldn't be his wife any more, they were so young and made the wrong decision to marry!
She showed him the picture in the museum, and what she felt about all her life.
“I don't believe this painting should mean the end of our marriage. Because I look at it and I see the opposite from you. Yes, something's gone wrong. Yes, she is unhappy right then, in that moment. But when I look at her, at this, Liz, I just see a picture full of love”.

David decided to make their honeymoon free of work, and to be all with Liz, extending the time left for them in Paris for another 48 hours, full of love.

Honeymoon in Paris is a novella, a prequel to Moyes’ full-length The Girl You Left Behind. I’m not a huge fan of short stories because they never seem to draw a complete portrait but, since I’ve had The Girl You Left Behind sitting unread on my bookshelf for over a year, I decided to see if I could jump start my interest with this little morsel. In Honeymoon in Paris, we get snap shots of two recently married women, both wondering if they’ve made the best decision. One is a modern story, the other is a WWI era story. The modern woman, Olivia (Liv), is distressed because she and her new husband only have a week for their honeymoon and he has spent most of it on business, leaving her feeling abandoned and lonely, not to mention worried she’s made a mistake in marrying a workaholic. The other woman, Sophie, has married a painter more interested in palling around with his friends than collecting payment for his paintings. When a “friend” of Sophie’s new husband puts a bug in her ear that his is a womanizer and will probably continue to be so, Sophie worries that he will cast her aside for another woman.

While it is a short and harmless read, I was not smitten with Honeymoon in Paris. It is focused on this brief chapter in these two lives where none of the characters is really impressive or engaging. Though she is right to be upset, Liv comes across as whiny and annoying. Sophie, presented as strong and feisty, comes across as weak and gullible. By this being such a narrow window, it shows these characters at their worst and with little background, you can’t really see their true personalities shine.

If I didn’t already own The Girl You Left Behind and hadn’t already read Me Before You and One Plus One, I may not have chosen to read The Girl You Left Behind after this short story. Generally only Stephen King’s short stories pull me in because, well he’s Stephen King. I wish I’d skipped this one because it made me indifferent to Olivia and Sophie but, that said, knowing how skillful Moyes is, I am optimistic that I will enjoy The Girl You Left Behind. Just maybe not right now:)

Not:

This was cute, but not overly cute. Moyes is so skilled at crafting touching romances with a hint of realism and an aftertaste of something bittersweet. Her stories are believable and the romantic aspects lies in the recognition.

Before I read the afterword, I had not realized that "Honeymoon in Paris" was a prequel. I look forward to seeing which turn the story will take in its fully fleshed out form, as I adored "The Last Letter From Your Lover", which this story was a bit reminiscent of in Moyes' technique with interwoven narratives.

A delightful little read on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Now, I'll indulge in another romance-craving of mine and rewatch the "North and South" mini-series for the hundredth time. After all, that's what Sundays are for. Right?

This is the most vapid book I have every read and I am not exaggerating. It is two seperate stories about two women on their honeymoons with their husbands in Paris. One is in 1912 and the other is 2002. Both women are equally stupid, short sighted and narcissistic. The modern one moans and complains because her husband makes a business meeting while in Paris. He is an architect and wants to meet a client. SHE DECIDES THIS IS SO BAD SHE HAS TO LEAVE HIM. WHAT??? Sorry the guy is trying to make a living. She cries and sobs and carries on and tells him she can't be married to him. He has to be with her every second on her honeymoon. He cancels his meetings and says all that is important in the world is her. Naturally she likes this. The second story is an earlier version of the same tale. Grow up newlyweds. The guys are supporting you-- not out with a prostitute. It could be worse.

Maybe I am REALLY unfamiliar with the ROMANTIC genre. I guess it is not for me. I only read this book because I really enjoyed Jojo Moyes novel, ME BEFORE YOU. It was far more sophisticated and nuanced in that the character was a quadroplegic and the love story was unique.

I am not hiding this review due to spoilers since the book is so predictble nothing could be spoiled.

Honeymoon in Paris

Honeymoon in Paris is a marvellous introduction to the characters in The Girl You Left Behind. Although I read this after The Girl You Left Behind, I was very interested in learning more about the couples in the story; Sophie and Edouard and Liv and David.

Sophie loves Edouard and he loves her. But Sophie wonders how long his love will last. For Liv, her honeymoon with David is not going the way she imagined. Is it a sign of what their life together will be like?

Honeymoon in Paris is a great contrast to The Girl You Left Behind as it is set years before the events in that book. Also, it allows the reader to learn a few interesting details about the couples which were not mentioned in The Girl You Left Behind and observe how the characters have changed. Honeymoon in Paris is a thoroughly enjoyable novella and precursor to the stunning The Girl You Left Behind which will make you want to pick up and read it if you haven't already devoured it.
