In Tonya Calvert’s Saylor On the Seashore we are treated to a warmth of characters, cautionary tales and wonderful word repetition. Illustrator Alejandro Echavez spins magic with warm illustrations of the panhandle seashore in the deep south, full of character and room for Calvert’s story to teach and guide young readers to “listen and learn”. The repetition and overarching community of this story is the heart and soul and one that children will find encouraging and wish to revisit again and aga ...more

Saylor, a young seagull, and his friends struggle to survive in the Florida Panhandle. When hunger starts to override what he’s been told, Saylor finds himself in trouble, but with the help of Old Gray Pelican, Piper the Sandpiper, and Big Blue Heron, he’s freed and learns the biggest lesson of them all—listen to your elders.

Whether for children who enjoy the ocean or for those who like birds, SAYLOR ON THE SEASHORE is a fun spin on beach reading. Both informative and inspiring, it opens up dis

Residing on the risky, Florida Panhandle is a fledgling seagull named Saylor. The young gull is frequently driven by his love of eating opposed to having common sense. His pals cautioned him about the dangers lurking in the waters; however, all their good advice seems to fly away in the breeze when his stomach takes over, grumbling for food. Based on a true story, the novel parallels themes of kinship and loyal relationships. It’s a wonderful tale to share with children and discuss with them the ...more

It pays to listen to your elders…

This is a well-written picture book with several life lessons for children. It’s a story of family and friendship, and children will learn why both are important. Additionally, listening to others is also a strong theme running throughout the book, as are the consequences of making poor decisions. Beautiful illustrations by Alejandro Echavez brings the story to life with immediately appealing artwork. Overall, a visual fun read, and launch pad for meaningful pare

Saylor is a little seagull who lives with his Momma and Poppa. Momma and Poppa teach Saylor how to find food and stay safe, warning him to stay away from the fishermen with their poles, nets, lines, and hooks. Saylor's friend Old Gray Pelican warns him about the fishermen, too. Saylor is hungry, though, and when he ventures closer to the fishermen to find food, he feels something tightening around his leg. Oh, no! Saylor's caught! Featuring colorful, adorable illustrations and based on actual ev ...more

Saylor on the Seashore is a very well written story about an adorable seagull named Saylor. Although Saylor has been warned by his parents and Old Gray Pelican to stay away from the fishermen, these warnings are forgotten when it's lunchtime. Luckily, Saylor's parents and friends are on hand to help the little seagull out. Young readers will relate to Saylor's curiosity. Alejandro Echavez's illustrations really bring this story to life. Children will surely ask to read this again and again!

Beautifully illustrated story about a little seagull who gets into a spot of bother when he ignores some wise advice. The message is wrapped up in a wonderfully creative and fun story. The repetition of the stories setting, deep in the south, works well to evoke the feeling of being there. Altogether a lovely book.

I enjoyed reading about poor little Saylor, but happy it all turned out OK in the end. The illustrations in the story were wonderful, including a few pages of gorgeous silhouettes. This book made me want to be at the ocean!

Wherever we live, including "in the Panhandle, deep in the South" (I love the repetition!), we all make mistakes. But this lovely books shows us two things. We can learn from our mistakes, and real friends will be there to help. The writing and illustrations bring this book to life!
