I didn't enjoy this as much the second time around.
I originally read Paper Girls, Volume 1 & Paper Girls, Volume 2 back in 2017. For some reason, I gave 4 stars to the 2nd volume and I'm not sure why.
I'm also not sure why I just sort of stopped after that second volume. But some of my Shallow friends decided to buddy read these what with the resurgence of interest in the comics now that a tv show that is supposed to drop. So here I am in an attempt to fit in with the cool kids.

description

Now, I don't want to make it sound like I hated it or something. It's ok.
And the story has the ability to go either way right now.
But a big part of me felt like 10 issues and/or 2 volumes in I should have more of an idea of what's going on. Then I remembered that in Y The Last Man Vaughan ended up stringing me along with tidbits only to shit the bed in the final volume.
I'm not sure I trust you anymore, sir.

I've got 2 more of these deluxe editions to go.
Right now we've got a story about middle school girls from the 80s that get caught up in some sort of massive time travel adventure. Some of it is cool, some of it is weird, and some of it is just pretentiously annoying.
Maybe the giant maggots, clones, and nonsense language start to come together in a coherent way in the next edition - which I haven't read yet, btw.
We shall see.

The only graphic novel I've read before by Brian K. Vaughan was "Saga" which is one of my favourite series. So I suppose it's no surprise how much I enjoyed this.

On to Book 2

This review is mainly about the quality of this deluxe hardcover, which is by far the best way to read this series. $35 for 10 issues blown up in the OHC format is a fucking steal, and I didn’t even pay close to retail price for the set of 3. I do wish the spine was sewn instead of glued, but everything else, from the page quality to the extras, is stellar. The extras in this consist of some sketches, alternate covers, and certain script pages and the pencils that accompanied them. If you wanna read Paper Girls, read it through these Deluxe Editions!!

After falling in love with his Saga series, I wanted to branch out to other projects written by Brian K. Vaughan, and that led me here! The Paper Girls are Erin, Tiffany, Mackenzie, and KJ, pre-teen kids living in 1988 Cleveland, who meet on their respective newspaper routes early in the morning after Halloween, and find themselves dropped into an epic fantasy adventure.

This adventure of the Stranger Things/Goonies variety happens to be a bit of a mind-wreck filled with parallel timelines, multi-verses, dinosaurs, giant maggots, and futuristic soldiers.

Oh who am I kidding, it might not be about that stuff at all; I would be lying if I said I understood everything that was happening here! The comic lets it's secrets out on its own terms and it can get a little frenetic and confusing but the interesting thing is that I didn't really care. I enjoyed the characters and their budding relationships so much that I could watch them do anything. Plus, I'm a sucker for time travel so I'm down to being patient and seeing where it all goes! The second volume in particular is a rollercoaster of crazy-ass ideas that are sometimes hard to follow, but I'll be holding on for the ride.

The two volumes included in this upcoming deluxe edition are also available in cheaper single editions here:

I don’t read a lot of Science Fiction so this was a very refreshing experience for me. First, the art is gorgeous, I think my favorite at this point from all the comics I’ve read so far. Then, the story is really engaging even if it’s a lot to take in. In the beginning there are more things than are not making sense than things that are, but it gets better if you stick with it.
And also, the whole idea of having pre-teens girls as main kick-ass characters that are chased by Apple as a future cult that runs the world on dinosaurs ,and whose members speak an evolved English and have an army of clones, is just crazy-interesting.

I zipped through Paper Girls, Book One, in one night while watching a 90s movie about comic book people (can you guess which one?) - total coincidence because this is most often compared to Stranger Things. There is a girl gang, strange creatures, time travel, and danger! A lot of it is in Hoopla if you have it - this is Book One which is a compilation of Volumes 1&2, which already compile single issues.

Wow!! This book was flarking awesome!! It hits the ground running. The first issue had wild crazy ish happening right off the bat. Deformed people attacking them, finding an odd lunar lander looking device in a basement and the sky turning pink with a million stars visible. I knew after that first issue, I was in for a crazy ride. Bought the three deluxe editions like 2 years ago and finally cracked them open. Best time as any with the show releasing later this month. I stayed away from reviews, spoilers even the damn synopsis. I literally had no clue what to expect. The action is great, Cliff Chang’s art is perfect for this and the story is bonkers. A whole 10 issues in and I’m still not sure what’s really happening and I love it. BKV has somehow managed to keep me fully invested without telling me much. I love the characters and the concept behind this is unlike anything I’ve ever read. The pacing is great with a huge sense of adventure. Plus the books reads fast as hell. I can’t wait to open vol 2!!!!

A really solid series by Brain K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang, Matt Wilson, and Jared K. Fletcher. I don’t think it’s quite near the level of Vaughan’s and Fiona Staples’ Saga (which I think is their Magnum Opus if I’m being honest), but it is still really enjoyable and smart.

The setting(s?) are really fun, and so are the pop culture references (both pop culture past and pop culture present). The dialogue is fantastic, and really the entire experience is too.

Can’t wait for the second hard cover to come out, I already have it preordered!

Full (mini) review now posted!

I’ve been on the weirdest graphic novel kick. I usually prefer my books without pictures, but there’s something about this time of year when it’s cold and life gets incredibly busy that just makes me feel the need for something easier. Like graphic novels.

I picked up this omnibus because I love the 80s. And Stranger Things. And the synopsis promised bits of both. It delivered. This had knights riding pterodactyls, radioactive teenagers from the future, and our main character paper girls. It was enjoyable, if not incredibly memorable. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the art, but it was different. I know there are people out there who love this series, and those who have yet to discover it who will love it, as well. I might not be one of those people, but I get the appeal.

Not sure why it took me so long to get around to these, because I love Brian's mind. The things and places he dreams up are out of this world. (Pun intended 😉)

Can't wait for the next issue; with that ominous ending who can?

"The here and now is neither here nor now"

I fucking LOVE Brian K. Vaughan's writing. He writes the Saga comics too and those are my favorite comics. Paper Girls are right up there with the Saga series for me. The first ten issues of Paper Girls were a wild trip and I didn't want to stop reading. I highly recommend this series if you love time travel and monsters and badass chicks from the 80s.

Speaking as a non-fan of Saga, which everyone else LURVES, I cannot praise Paper Girls enough.

There is cringe in nearly every issue, if not on nearly every page, and yet the story is spell-binding.

It's no SAGA, but PAPER GIRLS is definitely an engaging and intense (and thoroughly mind-fucky) graphic novel series that I really want to continue! I feel like my rating might go up after I finish the entire series.

When the series was announced back in the day I was really excited. I love Saga and I like Y: The Last Man too. I didn't really like We Stand on Guard so I was expecting another smash hit by BKV. And like John Locke from Lost used to say - I was wrong! Well, sort of... But anyways, I've dropped the series after the first story arc. Not like it was bad but reading it on monthly basis hasn't really worked for me. But since I kept hearing good things about it I knew I will get back to the series one day and give it another shot. And it was worth it.

The series will wrap up in summer 2019 so it's a good opportunity to catch up with the quartet of pre-teen girls who are delivering newspapers in the 80s in Cleaveland. Shit got weird on a Halloween night and the girls are warped to 2016. One of them got lost on the way and the others are trying to find her while learning that time traveling is a real thing and so are giant maggots and flying dinosaurs. And meeting an older self is also odd, or finding out that you are already dead.

The start of the series is a bit chaotic but things will start making more sense with the second story arc. Or by this time you will accept that there are some things that won't make sense to you. Anyways the more I got into the story the more I've enjoyed it and I am looking forward to Book Two.

I enjoyed this one so much. I went completely blind, without any kind of expectations or even knowledge of what was the plot about. Once I started I was afraid it wouldn't work for me but it totally did. I really enjoyed the writing and the references made throughout the book.
I'm glad I picked this up.

I loved this. Anything featuring kids on bikes peaks my interest. Paper Girls is no exception. The titular paper girls are fun, flawed and varied. They feel like real people interacting with an incredibly unreal world.

The creativity used for the antagonists is excellent. For example, those antagonists ride freaking dinosaurs! I love dinosaurs. Kids on bikes and dinosaurs. Surly it had to be a winner?

It’s all held up by the comics absolutely incredible artwork. Truly a joy to look at.

The stupidest part of me didn't realize this was "paper girls" like "paperboys," as in people who deliver newspapers. I kept saying it in my head as paper GIRLS, not PAPER girls. I don't know what I thought it meant. Something super clever about the situations and lives of girls? I guess "Newsies" was taken.

10 issues deep and it's still pretty unclear what the fuck is going on. There's time travel, maybe, and some sort of plan to capture teen girls or something? Kind of an Akira, "Their youth is their greatest weapon" thing going on?

I'll keep reading. It's fast-moving enough to keep me going, but I'd like to get into the story pretty soon. It's hard to describe...things are happening, but the pieces don't fit together yet, and I'm banking that they will. And they'd better. Oh, they'd better, Brian K. Vaughan. Otherwise...otherwise I'll be pretty pissed and complain to my girlfriend about it. Can you live with that guilt, Vaughan? CAN YOU!?

Comparison to Stranger Things is apt in that you have four girls suddenly trying to navigate paranormal situations. Is it aliens? Is it time travel? Are there parallel universes? These girls are also from the 80s. Not as many 80s nods but the tech differences between now and then are significant. I'd read more. :)

(Zero spoiler review)
I could easily say 'this one wasn't meant for me', leave it at that and move on, although that wouldn't necessarily be true, and would be glossing over the considerable faults of this series. So here we go...
First of all, I think BKV is highly, HIGHLY, overrated. I still have a title or two of his I haven't read yet, and whilst Saga was mostly good, despite the steadily increasing wokeness as the series progressed (probably intrinsically related to the increase in wokeness within society), I've never felt the man was all that talented. But then again, it seems the comic book industry seems to attract hacks, has been's and never will be's. The last exit for the talentless.
Paper Girls encompasses everything wrong with BKV, highlighting his limitations as an author like nothing else. I'll give Runaways a pass, as that was his first effort, although god help me, that was terrible.
I'm certainly down for the premise, even if it does seem to be Stranger Things with the girl power cranked up to 11. If these characters were interesting, or stood on their own, (or were anything beyond one dimensional cardboard cut outs), I wouldn't care. But they aren't and I don't. After ten issues, I don't have a sense of these girls beyond the most superficial of traits. I know Mac is the one who gets to say slightly non-PC things, but that's just a vehicle so that every other character present can correct her and virtue signal. Jesus Christ I got sick of that really, really fast.
So, we have flat, boring, bland characters. We also have a sci-fi premise that feels like it was written by someone who think nodern Star Trek is, like totally super smart. Remember when sci-fi was actually the domain of the intelligent? Yeah, liberties with hard facts were taken when needed, but on the whole, you could tell the writer(s) put genuine thought and maybe even some research into what they were doing. Does BKV even pay lip service to explaining what is happening? Please...
This is dumb! Really dumb! So dumb I had to stop at times and will my brain cells not to commit suicide. I get not everything needs to be explained to the nth degree, but if you're the kind of person who can read ridiculous, coincidental nonsense over and over again without applying an ounce of critical thinking, then you may just like this. If you like things to make sense, I suggest you keep moving.
So we have shit characters and a shit plot. Is there anything here that can salvage this literary flatulence? In short, no. This is some average at best Cliff Chang art, wrapped around ten issues of poorly thought out, virtue signalling, ridiculously contrived garbage. I only bought these deluxe editions because I got them cheap and was supporting a local comic shop in purchasing them. I just knew this would turn out to be a waste of time and money, and BKV didn't even bother his ass to try and prove me wrong. This really is shit writing. Even if you like it, you really can't fool yourself into thinking this is anything beyond amateurish. Thankfully someone is going to buy them from me. Silver linings and all that. 2/5

This was another great graphic novel series that lived up to the hype for me. This is a very strong 4.5 star read for me! I had high hopes for this one due to it being by Brian K Vaughan - the writer of Saga, and I was not disappointed.

Straight away the plot was weird, interesting and keeps you reading! At first lots of things happen but the more you read the more they click in place! I loved the science fiction, time travel elements and the characters reminded me of the Stranger Things gang.

Their are a lot of different timelines, aliens, time wielding gangs and lots of twists and turns! I can’t wait to pick the next book up.

The comparisons to Stranger Things are apt: this has that same vibe, set in the same era, just one state over. The pace of this story is ridiculously perfect and unflagging, and I zoomed through the 300+ pages, eager to see what was coming next.

This is apparently going to be a TV series from Amazon, and if they can manage to bottle the awesome contained here, it will be a helluva ride. It’s going to cost a fortune, though, with the time travel, rayguns, dinosaurs, and other assorted oddities and monstrosities that fill nearly every page.

I immediately downloaded the next two books, and I’m hoping the quality keeps up because this was terrific.

This was fun. I don't tend to do graphic novels, much less YA stuff, but I do know the intersection can be cool. The superficiality of a graphic novel — there's little opportunity for elaborate world-building narratives in this medium — plays well with the over-the-top monsters and circumstances, and the elliptical narrative is fast and light.

Reading — viewing? perusing? — this was an enjoyable hour or so. I'm not sure if I'll continue the series, since I'm pathetically behind on my "I'm serious about his, dammit!" reading (as well as my podcast listening), but maybe. Maybe not, maybe.

I read this because my GR friend and Professor of English really liked one of the series and I stumbled on his review. Please read that review of Volume One (which is apparently Books 1 through 5 of thirty in the series) if you need more enthusiasm.
