another misao book. i actually picked this book up after reading some sad shit and needed something light. yeah i thought, this was not exactly a light story but... considering how i didn't expect much from this book, i was pleasantly surprised to find how much i enjoyed this. it definitely fulfilled my jingai fetish lols i mean, ya wanna read about a wolf fucking a human with his wolf dick? well... here ya go, here's one.

the story starts out with a prologue. there's a legend in the village that warns inhabitants from going near the remote mountains because an inugami (or a dog god) controls that territory. if you enter, the inugami will carry you away with him. 10 years old torino hiro ignores that very warning after having an argument with his father, and runs away to the forbidden mountains. his dad goes looking for him and now, they are both trapped in a blizzard. with the dad unconscious and hiro freezing to death and soon following after his father, he finds himself face-to-face with the legendary inugami. inugami proclaims that the dad cannot be saved but, he'll save the kid instead and will return back to him when hiro turns 20 years old. the dog god places a mark on the palm of hiro's hand as proof of his promise, and swallows the dad's soul. hiro then suddenly loses consciousness.

after that, you enter the main story. the day before hiro turns 20, he is fired from his job at the convenience store by his manager. hiro stubbornly continues to tell the manager that his co-worker, sumida, is constantly stealing from the store (by taking snacks and mags without ringing it through the cash register). sumida is the son of the owner of the store, so obviously the manager doesn't want to catch the attention of the owner. the manager tells hiro that he's being a nuisance and that he'll find plenty of people to replace him. hiro is honest and blunt, and tends to take things seriously. if hiro finds someone not working hard, he'll scold them for it. people would tease him, calling him "hero" which sounds just like his name. hiro doesn't mean anything ill by insisting people to do things correctly, but it rubs people the wrong way. the shift before, he had a huge argument with sumida in front of the customers. hiro ends up yelling out, "even though your 23, you're stealing from your own father's store!" sumida complains right to the manager, and the manager is afraid that the owner will hear about this. which is why he fires hiro immediately after.

hiro lives with his grandma, who receives a pension from the government. because of their socio-economic situation, hiro isn't able to go to college. but he does plan on continuing to work and save money to eventually go to college. grandma owns a bit of land, which catches the interest of investors and realtors. they plan on building a ski and golf resort and a mall, and grandma's land is part of the region where they want to build these places. they've been asking her for the past year for her to sell the rights to her property. she's perfectly okay with doing so, as long as they promise to not destroy the shrine of the dog god. this they did not agree with.

people related to the investors and realtors vandalized their shrine and carved into the sacred tree with an axe. that night, grandma suddenly collapses and is unconscious. hiro panics and calls for an ambulance, but because of the blizzard, it would take them up to an hour for help to arrive. hiro runs to the shrine and straight to the sacred tree to pray for help. he sees inugami, the figure that took his father away 10 years ago, and he comes to fulfill his promise of returning back to hiro. inugami is filled with vengeance for being hurt and betrayed by the humans (he had always protected the humans of the village, but what he got back in return was abandonment, and invasion of his territory), and so he kidnaps hiro and takes him straight to his residence. inugami rapes him, and the seal disappears from hiro's hand and instead moves to the side of his stomach. now no matter where hiro goes, inugami will always know. because inugami was hurt by the villagers (harming the sacred tree in turn harms him, and because someone ran an axe through the tree, he ends up being effected by it), he can't remember his name.

if hiro is able to find out his name, he can return back home to his dying grandma. if not, he is forced to be a sexual companion to the inugami. the gods get their strength from the believers' faith in them. however, because inugami has been abandoned by the villagers, the only other way to regain strength is to have sex with a companion. hiro's new seal now prevents him from aging.

hiro meets the two attendants of inugami: fuji, a kind yet stern young man, and akane, the cutest wolf kid evaaar, who still have his tail and ears because... well, think of the manga "loveless" k? these are cool peeps and i honestly enjoyed the story a lot more because of these two characters. other characters introduced are: suzuya, a human and a companion just like hiro. you learn later in vol 2 why suzuya was dragged into this world. he was inugami's companion 50 years ago, though he's really the yata no kami (3-legged god)'s companion. yata no kami, or just yata, is a wandering god who travels from one god's territory to another since he doesn't have a territory of his own. yata is an ass, but i'm a total fan of suzuya and when you read vol 2, you'll see why <3

inugami is able to control the weather, and his mood reflects the weather around him. so hiro thinks the reason for the blizzard is because of inugami's wrath towards the villagers. so not only inugami is responsible for the death of his father, he is also responsible for the eventual death of...

and the real reason for the blizzard is because.....

// spoiler //

the bear god is mad at the 3-legged god and because yata's true form is a black 3-legged bird-like creature, the bear god caused the blizzard so he can cover the entire village in a sea of white to easily find yata. inugami previously had the power to stop the bear, but after someone carved into the sacred tree, he forgot his god name and therefore lost his strength. the grandma was eventually able to get to the hospital by the ambulance, but her health deteriorated. she held on and cried out for hiro to come for her from the lonely hospital room, but he was never able to be by her side. two weeks later, she died. when inugami gave hiro permission to go back to his home for only a night, he learned from the villagers that grandma had passed away a year ago.... oh yeah, that's right. didn't i mention that already? time moves really slow in inugami's realm vs in the human world. a few days can be half a year in human world. with hiro's dad, the dad was already dead when inugami arrived to take his soul. the dad's soul was lost and that's why inugami swallowed the soul - to carry it and guide it to the road to hades.

// end of spoiler //

because of hiro's rude assumptions and his mentality of making the division of him/humans vs them/gods (can you blame him?), he ends up hurting fuji's and akane's feelings, and yes, even inugami himself. even though inugami is pretty rude and harsh himself (he uses the seal on hiro to control hiro's mind and makes him play with himself against his will), and he reacts with emotion first (ISFJ anyone?), he's really a kind god... that happens to be super butthurt by the villager's betrayal. i know, i know. you'll have to read the rest of the story to find out what kindness i'm talking about because you're prob like, bitch stop he sounds like a complete asshole.

yeah.... that's the misao pattern. asshole seme turned chivalrous knight in shiny armor by the end. get used to it if you're gonna read her books.

overall, i enjoyed the story. the side-characters were fun, grandma is legit in my top best grandma characters ever. i was itching for an isekai bl story, and add some jingai in there and. well. done. yes, there's some sad parts in here. but compared to what i read before this (soukyuu no lorerai), this book was definitely what i needed at the time. chill, nothing too complicated, good feels in the end... the rape scenes were... ugh... but asides from that, i say def worth the read.

(fyi, inugami's real name is "kusunori tsukishiro no inu no kami" or "the dog god of the white moon camphor tree" something like that. k until next volume....)
