A coworker I admire recommended a different book by the same authors, Driving Fear from the Workplace. The library only had this one. So I checked it out. I am like that.
It was fine. Does a nice job of identifying that lots of people do not feel safe delivering bad news or unwanted truths in the workplace. Suggests some milktoast exercises for giving and receiving bad news. Acknowledges that there can be bad consequences for delivering unwelcome news. Gives no insight into how to identify the potential bad consequences or how to balance those with the potential good, which I found vexing.
While it identified that unwanted news could make people defensive, it gave only rudimentary suggestions for how to avoid that. I get that messages should be delivered with reflection, compassion, and clarity. But how do I deal with the extern, coworker, or facebook interlocutor who believes, deep down, that disagreement or substantive edits undermines their value as a human being, and thus must be dismissed or rejected? There may be no solution to that problem. But the book pretended it does not exist or was not relevant to the exact subject at hand, which was tiresome.
Got a little unwarrantedly messianic at the end. Suggests that as we get better at critiquing others, we’ll be have personal transformations into better, more fulfilled people. Took me to a Peggy Blumquist place.
While this book focuses on communication of difficult messages within the workplace, it has much wisdom for anyone who wishes to communicate better within any aspect of the human experience.
