I loved Margaret Rome when I was a teenager but now I am like meh. It was just okay. There was no passion in this novel. A couple of kisses, no sex. Now that doesn't bother me at all, but boring storyline does. It just didn't feel like a romance. I don't know why. Story was that here sister had a baby from her lover and she couldn't get ahold of him and she was suffering from the baby blues bad. So she left the baby with her virgin sister and went off to make money for them and to find her true love. Then the H shows up, says that the Father of the child had died in a plane crash and he would marry her so the child had his heritage and money. HE also thought the baby was hers. She of course marries him and then there is the wannabe OW (who is another creepy incestuous cousin) and the H is a freaking idiot and thinks the innocent h is a golddigger tramp. And of course the h plays along even though she is in love with her husband for some reason. There's another man that is the evil cousins friend who wants the h and the jealous husband finds her out with him and then he starts to smex her up bu she calls out Vito's, the dead Father's name, so that he won't complete the act which he doesn't and he takes her home. And there is a whole lot of drama. No more spoilers because someone may want to read it even after this. I gave it three stars simply because I used to love this author and so did my Mom. I would have liked it more if there had been just a little more romance. Maybe it's just my mood. I may have to reread.

Solid story. This is part of the quest to read the first 100 HPs. This one is numbered 62 and was published in 1968. Familiar tropes? Why yes there were. Let's see sister runs off and leaves the heroine holding the baby. Baby's uncle shows up and heroine pretends to be the baby mama to keep the rich uncle from just walking off with the baby. Heroine refuses to sleep with the hero because he'll figure out he's the first guy to do the deed. He gets his nose bent way out of shape and conflict ensues. There was a slightly different ending than was quite normal for this set up. All in all a good solid read.
I absolutely loved this novel which my mum had in hardback in her book collection. I first read this about 1976 aged 11. I loved the characters and the story was well told.
One of the nicer older harlequins. The Hero, Domenico is not such a jerk and when he is its only because Caroline does or says something to deliberately provoke him.
The story opens at the funeral of Caroline's father. Her step sister comes back pregnant and alone. They are practically destitute but manage by taking in baby sitting jobs. The sister gives birth but is so depressed that Caroline takes over the care of her nephew. The sister suddenly abandons both Caroline and her baby. Soon after Domenico, the uncle of the baby, comes along - he has found the sister's letters to his cousin, and he knows there was a baby. He assumes, however, that Caroline is the mother of baby Vito and he thinks she is the one that wrote to his cousin (apparently the cousin died in a plane crash) he is now prepared to take the baby. Caroline doesn't want to be separated from her nephew so she goes along with the misconception. Domenico proposes marriage so that they can both take care of baby Vito. They marry and go to his home in Rome. They allow everyone to assume that they married a year ago and baby Vito is their child! There is a strong attraction between them but Caroline refuses to give in to it since Domenico will find out about her own deception. Also, she feels if she finds her sister, then the threat of taking baby Vito away from them will be eliminated. There is a lot of blow hot and blow cold between them plus complications from another woman and another man before they can resolve things. Caroline is a bit of a ninny but then she is quite young and apparently never even left her village until she marries Domenico.
SPOILERS: The cousin is found alive, he survived the plane crash and the sister had left caroline and her baby to look for him. They marry and go to Rome. When Caroline finds out she panics as she thinks Domenico will despise her for her deception, and runs away back to England. Needles to say, Domenico tries hard to find her and when he does we get our declarations of love.

It had been a dreadful shock to Caroline when her sister disappeared, leaving her baby with Caroline, but she vowed to herself she would do the best she could for the infant.
So when the baby's uncle, Domenico Vicari, appeared, with an offer to marry Caroline and give the child a home and security, she felt she could not refuse. A condition of the marriage was that it would be in name only - but when Domenico had made it he had been under the impression that Caroline was the child's mother.
What would his reaction be when he discovered how she had deceived him
Three and a half stars -- the h makes a mess of things, the H is ridiculously jealous, but they don't go beyond the point where things get toxic. The story moves along briskly, and the h rallies pretty quickly from her setbacks.
Quite a nice story of a rather saintly girl who is forced to lie to the hero (no ages given for any characters) when her stepsister disappears leaving her with the baby. The hero comes to tell her that his cousin is dead and he will marry her in his stead (thinking she is the mother) or would take the baby away. So they marry, he gets handsy (he is not a celibate, he says), but she puts him off. The OW is all Over him and kisses him at a party and he spends most evenings with her (but it is platonic of course ;-)). The OM is the OW’s usual date, and makes the heroine cook jealous. But of course the real jealous is that she’s been with his cousin (or he thinks so). What I thought was weird is that you never get any sense of the baby. He just isn’t really a part of the story - I think the writer forgot about him! It’s ok - the dialogue is stilted, it’s a bit superficial and lacking description, but she is a nice girl and by the end of it, he is crazy about her.
"He was humbled by the thought of how his cruel kisses must have offended her gentle innocence"
The heroine pretends to be her sister's baby's mother and agrees to marry the baby's paternal uncle for the child's sake. The baby's Italian father is missing and the mother is unable to look after her child.
Caroline's sister had depression while pregnant which worsened after giving birth because she was convinced her lover didn't want her nor the baby. It was because of this depression she left leaving her baby to Caroline who didn't have the means to support herself not to mention the baby. Caroline was strong, but was forced to accept the baby's uncle's demand that she marries him or otherwise part with the baby. Because of his arrogance and highhandedness, Caroline hid the fact that she was not the baby's mother.
In fairness, it's well written and enjoyable to read, but some parts were left untold in the end, especially concerning his aunt's reaction towards Caroline's and his own deceit for her!!!!!

I didn't like this story much.i found the hero dominico very dominating and overbearing and heroine Caroline a stupid. Caroline's sister has an affair and is pregnant and her boyfriend is missing, she gives birth to a boy and leaves her with Caroline and goes back to her modeling job to search for her boyfriend. Enter hero dominico a cousin of the boyfriend who thinks Caroline is the fiance of his cousin and pronounces tge cousin Vito to be dead and offers marriage to Caroline to bring up his young nephew. Caroline is so stupid that she doesn't tell dominico that she is not the mother of the baby but aunt.Dominico finds her irresistible and Caroline is described as if she is drop dead gorgeous or a miss universe but I found her to be most boring and without any talent or skill. The hero can't stop lusting for her and she keeps him at an arm's length even after marriage. Finally the lost cousin is found and he unites with his family and Caroline runs away from dominico who chases her and finds her in England and confesses his love for her and HEA.
I am in a old harlequin phase - I am amazed and how writing from the 70s has changed - romances were written much more formally and actually at a 12th grade level and of course - with different social norms and certain. Aspects would not fly today. Having said that- it was a slow read even with the higher grade level.
I think I read this long time ago & loved it so much ...will look for it again Update : Not the one I thought I have read before ..It had a strong promising beginning but went to shambles & was pretty boring towards it's climax &finale ....
I really didn't mind reading a bit about Dorinda as she and her baby are the catalyst for the story, but 34 pages of Caroline's self sacrifice is now beginning to make me gag.
