Hotshot hockey center Finn Donnelly wants nothing more than to take The Cup to his best friend’s grave after his team’s big win.
The problem is, that also means returning to his hometown and seeing January Sinclair. A.K.A. his other— okay, former— best friend. The woman he kissed. The woman he wanted. The woman he left behind.
January might be as beautiful and fierce as ever now that she runs a house full of firefighters but Finn’s ghosts belong in the past. As soon as he’s done at the cemetery, he’s on the first flight out of Remington. For good.
Even if he does get stuck in town with January tempting him at every turn.
But Finn’s ghosts won’t let go so easily. Will he and January learn to build new trust Or will their past keep them from falling in deep…
One dirty-talking, bad-boy hero + his former BFF who’s always wanted more + a touch of enemies-to-lovers, a firehouse fundraiser to warm your heart, and a whole lot of sexytimes to warm the rest of you = this standalone novella that ends in a sweet and steamy HEA.
Originally published in the HOT ON ICE hockey anthology.
USA Today best-selling author Kimberly Kincaid writes romantic suspense that sizzles and contemporary romance with heart and heat. Equal parts action and emotion, her firefighters and first responders always save the day. When she's not finding adventure with her family and naughty Whippets, Olive, Daisy, and Jack, she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to éclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book.
Kimberly's series include The Intelligence Unit, Remington Medical, Station Seventeen, and her brand-new Remington Rescue Squad series. All titles stand alone for easy reading.
Deep Check is book #1.5 in the Station Seventeen series by Kimberly Kincaid. I have not read any of the other books in this series and was able to read this with no problem. But it definitely left me wanting to go back and read the rest of the other books. I just fell in love with these characters.
Finnegan (Finn) Donnelly is twenty-five years old, and is a professional hockey player for New Orleans Cajun Rage. He has just accomplished his dream, they won the cup. But it was also the dream of one of his best friends from home, the best friend that he had an argument with seven years ago and walked away from. Now his friend is dead and all Finn wants to do with the cup is take it home to Remington and go to his friend’s grave. After that he hopes to get the closure he never had. Then he is leaving town for good. Except that there is one other person he left behind in Remington.
January Sinclair is the administrator for Station Seventeen’s firehouse. It’s a job that keeps her more than busy but on top of that, she has accepted the position of handling this year’s fundraiser event. It’s a very important event to raise money for safer equipment for their firefighters. She hasn’t seen or heard from Finn in seven years so she was more than shocked when she came face to face with him. Even though she wants to stay angry with him for walking away all those years ago, the same attraction she felt when they were kids is still there as strong as ever. Only they aren’t kids any more.
Finn ends up needing to stay in Remington for longer than he expected so he and January spend time together. The feelings they both kept hidden before are stronger than ever and they don’t hesitate to enjoy the time they have together. Finn agrees to help January with her fundraiser and she helps Finn with his project. As the weeks pass, their connection becomes stronger. They both know, though, that Finn will have to leave when their time is up. His job is in New Orleans. And January’s home and life is in Remington.
This was short but oh so good. I just fell in love with these two. Sometimes it happens that for no apparent reason, two characters just grab your heart and they did. I loved watching them finally let the ghosts of their past go. But it’s their future that still hangs in the balance. This was steamy and sweet and I loved every page of it.
Kimberly is one of my favorite authors and I have enjoyed every book of hers that I’ve read. I don’t know why I never started on this series but this book has me wanting more of Station Seventeen.
I enjoyed this second chance story of Finn and January. Once the best of friends, one night, a kiss and actions that were never corrected, separated them for years. I liked that Finn recognized that he not only had reparations to make with the man he owed his success to, but to the girl he had left behind in the harshest of ways.
This is a sweet love story with low angst but holy heck was it steamy! Finn is a bit of a dirty talker and although he has a moment of idiocy, he was pretty swoon worthy. January knew what she wanted and that was Finn. I appreciated that she was strong enough to offer forgiveness and confident enough to voice her desires. Together, this couple burned up my Kindle.
This is a fast read that included several secondary characters. It felt a bit like they were being lined up in preparation of future books which is okay, but they didn’t really add a lot to this particular story. The conflict between Finn and January initially felt insurmountable but by the end it seemed to have ironed itself out. And then we have that moment of idiocy which added to the angst and made me want to smack this hero. Other than that, this was a very nice read and my first by this author. I’ll definitely be trying more from her.
With her novella Deep Check, Kimberly Kincaid shows that a full-length tale is not necessary to tell a passionate and sexy love story.
After fulfilling his dream of winning the Stanley Cup, the only thing Finn Donnelly wants to do with it is take it to the one person who believed he could do it. But to do so means Finn has to go back home and most likely run into January Sinclair, the one woman he couldn’t have and left behind. He has a plan though, he’ll take the cup to his best friend’s grave and leave immediately after.
January knows that after seven years of no contact she should get over Finn, especially when she has her hands full running Station Seveteen firehouse and organizing a fundraiser. But when he comes back home and stays for a few weeks she discovers that things weren’t as they seemed and that their attraction has an even bigger pull, but can they let go of the past to rebuild a new future?
In this novella, Kincaid creates flaming hot romance. January and Finn’s undisputable chemistry, which quickly turns into something deeper, feels absolutely believable due to the character’s previous connection. I loved how they found closure and worked their way towards a happy future.
Deep Check is novella #1.5 from the Station Seventeen series by Kimberly Kincaid. It is a sweet and sexy second chance romance that can be read as a standalone. Told from both points of view with a happy ending.
Reader-friends! I'm so excited to bring you a sizzling side story in the Station Seventeen series. Finn and January are originally from the HOT ON ICE hockey anthology, and I had the best time writing their second-chance love story.
This story is perfect for an afternoon of reading, so curl up in your favorite spot and get comfy! Happy reading :)
When Finn Donnelly's Ragin' Cajuns win the championship, there's only one person he's interested in sharing the championship cup with. In high school, Asher and January were his best friends and Asher was the one guy who always believed Finn would one day add his name to the Cup. Now that he has, it's only natural that he share it with Ash. Problem is that Ash died in a fire, and Finn has a lot of unfinished business, so he takes the Cup home and to the cemetery to have the talk and make the apologies he should have said years ago. If you're a hockey fan, Finn's story can't help but tug at your heart strings. Most of us remember that kid with a rough home life who loved the game but who nobody ever really thought would make it big and Kimberly Kincaid expertly captures all the insecurities and regrets and vulnerability in a story about going home. If you're a follower of Kincaid's fire hall stories, you'll recognize some of the characters - and of course, this one will be a "must read" so you can find out what's going on over at Station Seventeen and experience the camaraderie, the hijinks and the protectiveness they feel for one of their own that these First Responders all share. If you're a contemporary romance fan, you'll love Finn's rekindled relationship with his Calendar girl. It's just the kind of smexy romance story you've come to expect of you're a fan of this writer. Bottom line, if you read, you need to read this one. A thoroughly enjoyable read for a spring afternoon or a summer beach chair when you're lamenting hockey's off season.
I love a good second chance romance and Finn and January did not disappoint. Their friendship and past sorrow make this story that much better. Great quick read!
GREAT STORY!! I love Station Seventeen and getting to know Finn and January was loads of fun! This is a quick story but not quick enough to give you whiplash. I enjoyed the even pace and it made the story fun, heartwarming and sexy. I can't wait to read the next book!
Finnegan has finally achieved his goal of winning the Cup, but the only person he wants to share it with most, his best friend Asher, has passed away. To make matters worse, Finn and Asher hadn’t spoken in the seven years prior and it all circled back to one steamy kiss between him and January, the third bestie in their tight knit circle. So, not only has Finn lost one best friend but two. Still, Finn moves forward and decides to use his day with the Cup to take it to Asher’s gravesite and share his win. When circumstances stick Finn in town longer than planned, he decides to make his apology to January in person, with unexpected results.
Finn and January’s past and future collide in spectacular fashion and I loved how these two just laid it all out to clear the air. Their chemistry was steamy and sizzled off the charts, but never once overwhelmed the emotional connection rebuilding between them. I also loved the family feel of the firehouse crew! Their friendly ribbing and camaraderie showed deep bonds and support. And poor Edwin! The keeper of the Cup must witness some very awkward moments with the players!
A missed moment, a new beginning...good gracious...the sizzling chemistry, and a touch of humor, Deep Check hit all my buttons with what I love best about friends to lovers/second chance romances! Apparently, I’ve also stumbled upon a new firehouse of hotties to read about too...
Hot hockey players and firefighters. Have your attention now?
Well if you want the best of both worlds then run, don't walk and snap up Kimberly Kincaid's latest offering set in the Station Seventeen series world.
This was previously released in the charity box set Hot On Ice, so if you read it then you haven't missed a book. But if you are like me, any excuse for a re-read will do. And that's exactly what I did and I accidentally inhaled it a second okay, maybe third, time.
This novella has everything you need, hot hockey players, hot firefighters, hot sex, romance and the chance to make amends with the past and find a new future.
Finn and January were always meant to be, even if it took them years, distance, misunderstandings and chasing a life goal to finally get there. And when they do, it oh so worth it.
Find a comfy spot and indulge in a love story that will warm your heart.
Loved this! It's a fun, sexy second chance romance that is very well written and has some amazing characters. I'm not always a fan of novellas because I really like getting to know the characters in a book. This one doesn't hold anything back and contains a lot on a few pages. Definitely one I recommend to everyone.
After winning "The Cup" with the Rage, Finn Donnelly returns to Remington, NC to face the demons of his past. Surprisingly, clearing up the past helps him find the path for his future.
I LOVED this second chance romance between Finn and January!!! A mix of Hockey and firemen and hotness!!! Kimberly Kincaid has never disappointed!!! I love her writing style and her characters. A MUST read!
Awesome second chance story! Finn is the star Center for the New Orleans Rage and January is the girl he left behind back in his hometown of Remington. When it's Finn's turn to take the Cup there's only one place he wants to go and one person he needs to show he'd accomplished his goal then he's back to New Orleans. He doesn't count on the impact of seeing January again will have on him and the ties he still feels to her. January was hurt more than she cares to admit when Finn left Remington, and her, to find fame and glory in the world as a professional hockey player. Even though it's been 7 years she still feels the sting of his rejection. But now he's back looking sexier than ever, humble and apologetic, and ready to make amends. These two were fabulous together in every way. Very romantic and steamy love story. Great characters, fun dialogue, and engaging to the end. 4 stars.
I really enjoyed this book. Finn and January's story is great! I mean firefighters and hockey players! Finn goes back to his hometown to visit his best friend Asher's grave with the Stanley Cup. He needed to make amends for something that had happened 7 years prior. January was also his best friend that he hadn't spoken to. How these two come back together was so nice to follow. I love that we continue to get to know all the firefighters from Station Seventeen in this as well. Super quick and easy read! The only thing I'm missing is an epilogue. This book had such a quick ending that I would've loved to see where they are later on. I'm really hoping we get a glimpse of them in the next book.
This is my first book in this series and I fell in love with the people and the town. I am not a sports person at all but you don't have to be to enjoy this book. Finn has to make up for somethings he did wrong 7 years ago. Coming back to his hometown will do just that. While he is there he meets back up with January his high school best friend. This book is quick but with a full story that makes you want to stay in the town of Remington.
*I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
Finn Donnelly has come back to Remington after winning the cup for one reason, to bring the cup to the grave site of his friend. He doesn't expect to run into January Sinclair but the blast from the past is one that changes everything. The kiss between them the night before he left town caused the fight between him and Asher and put up the walls between him and January. Now being back in town he realizes he not only needed to apologize to his dead friend but to January. That apology leads to so much more and changes everything. This was a fully developed read in a short novella and did not leave me crying for more because it was so satisfying. Hot and sexy hockey players along with the Station Seventeen gang, what more could I want.
WOW this story is hot enough to melt the ice and melt my heart at the same time. I loved the blending of the firefighters and hockey players we have read from Kimberly's series. I love the tradition of the winning Stanley Cup team each have time with The Cup and I loved how Finn honoured Lord Stanely's legacy with his friend. Finn and January shared a passionate kiss when they were teenagers, but soon after, Finn leaves for the minor leagues to pursue his dream and January is left behind with a broken heart. But like all good redemption stories, these two finally share their hot passion for one another. It was supposed to be just a few weeks, passion, but it soon turns to them wanting more. But how to get it when they both want different things. Kimberly Kincaid gives us a wonderful, passionate story of second chance at love.
This is my first book by Kimberly Kincaid and although I’m not an enthusiastic fan of sports’ romance this story has been very involving. Both characters are very caring and very fond of their loved ones. Finn is a hot hockey player who comes back to his hometown after winning the cup and at Remington he meets the woman who has haunted his dreams for a long time. January still can’t believe that Finn has come back; she still holds a grudge in his regards after leaving her with a wounded heart. Are they going to be able to patch things up after all the suffering? Will it be the right time for them to finally reveal their feelings? This is a huge “cup” with a lot of romance, love and marvelous feelings.
Deep Check is a great second chance romance quick read in Kimberly Kincaid's Station Seventeen series but can be read as a standalone. Finn and January have explosive chemistry and I really enjoyed reading their story.
3.5 Stars. This is a short, sweet and hot story and although Finn was a bit of an idiot at times I still liked him and thought the romance was well done.
Finn has accomplished his goal of the last seven years...his team, The Rage, just won the Cup. Of course this is cause for celebration, but he knows his next move is going to be painful. Though the friendship suffered when he left his hometown, Finn wants to share this victory with his best friend, Asher, even though it'll be while standing beside his grave. Plus, he knows he'll eventually see January as well, and that reunion proves to be almost as painful.
January, the administrator at Station Seventeen for the past four years, loves her job and views her co-workers as her family. She still misses her best friend, Asher, every day but ensures her mind is occupied by staying busy. And if her thoughts veer toward Finn, the third best friend in their trio, a time or two, she quickly knocks the sense back into herself and moves on.
"But he couldn't make up for the last seven years in a night. Hell, even though he'd had da&* good reasons for cutting her out of his life so abruptly, Finn couldn't make up for the last seven years ever." - Finn
Seven years ago, Finn and January kissed. Though she initiated it, and Finn hungrily returned it, their other best friend, Asher, witnessed it. Asher was in love with January and he and Finn got into a fight. Finn, upset with himself and the situation, also said hurtful things to January, and disappeared from their lives the next day. Finn never made things right between them. Asher, a firefighter, died working a house fire and he ignored January at the funeral.
When Finn and January take small steps in repairing their friendship, it's obvious the chemistry between them is intense. Which leads Finn to make a confession about the night she kissed him...he's always wanted her too.
Finn and January finally act on their desire for one another, and though both knew going in there time together had a deadline, fate has a different plan. It seems selling his Dad's former house won't be as quick as Finn had hoped. The place needs some work, which means Finn's stay just got extended by a few weeks. Plus, January offered her help and Finn will definitely take it and the time he'll get to spend with her because of it.
What happens when things between Finn and January become more than physical? Can they continue their relationship even though their lives are in different states? Will Finn's team offer him the contract he wants ensuring his return to New Orleans? Or will his hometown team's offer have more incentive allowing him to remain in North Carolina? Will Finn admit the love he has for his Calendar Girl? Will January show Finn that he owns her heart? Is there a HEA for these two? Or will Finn leave her behind once again, breaking her heart for the final time?
One-click now and follow along as two people enjoy the chance to finally be together and realize that's how it should've always been.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
I loved Deep Check by Kimberly Kincaid. This is a short story that is part of the Hockey anthology collection, Hot on Ice. This is Finn Donnelly’s story and his turn for a day with the Stanley Cup which was won by the New Orleans Rage. Finn plans to take the cup to the grave of his best friend from high school, Asher, back in his hometown of Remington, North Carolina. January Sinclair was best friends with Finn and Asher in high school, all the while having a crush on Finn. Finn left town shortly after graduation to play in the hockey minor league, leaving behind his two friends. January now works at Station Seventeen, keeping the place organized and running smoothly. Yet, when these two meet up again, the attraction and chemistry between these two is still there. The heat just sizzles when they are near one another. Ms. Flynn wrote an amazing story allowing these two to have a second chance and introduce readers to her Station Seventeen series.
This was a wonderful, sexy, and entertaining story with very likeable and authentic characters that you want to support and hope they can find for that happy ending. The characters were well written with complex characteristics. The story line was riveting and kept my attention to the very end. I enjoyed reading this book and had trouble putting this book down, reading it in one day. I highly recommend this book to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I enjoyed this second chance book. Finn and January have some past issues to confront before they can move forward. They are so good together. Finn has to overcome his past so that he can make a decision about his future which is not about running away from his past.
January and Finnegan (Finn) belong together. They just don’t think it’s possible. This is a story about two people suffering with the grief of their friend Asher, lost in the line of duty in a house fire. All three were best friends in school, growing up together. This gave them the bond that shaped their lives. January realizes very early in her life that she loves Finn and Asher but in different ways. She is in love with Finn but will never tell him. Ash is January’s best friend but he secretly loves her. Finn is in love with January as well but knows Ash’s feelings for her so he won’t make any kind of move.
January and Ash attend Finn’s going away party when he leaves to follow his dream of becoming a professional hockey player and to someday win the “Cup”. In a moment of weakness, January gives in and kisses Finn, who returns the kiss. Ash walks in on the kiss and he and Finn get into a fight. Finn leaves and never looks back.
When Ash is killed in the line of duty as a fireman, January and Finn lose a part of themselves. Time goes by and neither has contacted the other in seven long years. But then Finn and his hockey team have won the coveted Cup. Finn vowed that if they ever won, he would bring the cup back to Remington to show Ash and to apologize for being a jerk.
When Finn returns to Remington, January is blindsided and is still mad at him. They both soon realize that they need to be together. Their journey is a sweet, wild ride. I love that Finn can take care of a woman and be very romantic. January works very hard seeing to the safety of the local firemen and still saves time to spend with Finn and show him that he is very important in her life. It’s a story that makes you think and realize that life is very short. It’s essential that you grab that brass ring and take nothing for granted. I love this story!!
I read this novella as part of the Hot Hockey Anthology and absolutely loved it. It was my first experience with this author but made me immediately go out and one-click the rest of her books!
Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes and Ms. Kincaid did a wonderful job with Finn & January’s love story!!!
If you are anything like me you love a second chance at love, you also appreciate HOT heroes and strong female character. That is what you get in Deep Check, but so much more.
Finn and January had been friends forever, part of the three amigos, until one very stupid night when January kissed him, he kissed her back and their best friend saw it. It caused a rift between the friends, caused Finn to blow January off, and made him run from Remington, but never, ever has he forgotten his friends. He always thought that he would have time to make things right, but when his best buddy is killed in a fire, he lost the chance to make amends. When he finally reaches his dream of winning the Hockey Cup, he knows what he needs to do, take it to his friends grave and finally try to put away the ghosts of the past, and that means making amends with January too.
January has been in love with Finn for as long as she can remember, when he returned for the funeral, he was there a day and then ran for the hills, but now he is back in town, looking as hot as ever and making January remember all too well exactly why she fell in love with him. But she knows it it temporary, that he will be leaving soon. When he decides to fix up his old home to put on the market, January and her firefighter friends jump into help. When Finn helps January with her fund raiser, she is stunned, and over the moon.
But sometimes that ghosts of the past can sneak up on you, and Finn will need to decide if risking it all to be with January is a risk he is willing to take.
AMAZING! OUTSTANDING! HOT! Kimberly Kincaid does it again, pairing this amazing hockey story with her Station Seventeen series. I loved that we get to see friends from the other Stations Seventeen book, and I love the chemistry between Finn and January. This may be a novella, but trust me, it reads like a full length 300 page book. Fast paced, while not being short on content, this book is an amazing addition to the Station Seventeen series.
Deep Check (Station Seventeen) by Kimberly Kincaid is a love story that involves three longtime friends since high school who are now busy with careers, and one has died. This thought provoking and heart melting love story asks if one can really go home again, mend fences and rebuild relationships. Love the journey that January Sinclair or Calendar Girl, the nickname given to her years ago by hometown Cajun Rage hockey Cup wining hero Finnegan Donnelly, and “still in their hearts” the memory of their deceased friend and firefighter, Asher Gibson experience. January Sinclair is Station Seventeen’s administrator, where she has worked for the past four years, after she finished college. Seven Years is how long she and Finnegan or Finn, have been estranged. Finnegan always wanted to pursue playing professional hockey and he left seven years ago to play for the Cajun Rage team and has just returned home with the coveted Cup with one main goal in mind. He must make amends with Ash because of a fight they had before he left to play hockey even if it is at graveside, with the Cup. After Finnegan returns, January was set on focusing her energy on planning the upcoming Station Seventeen Fundraiser and fought to keep Finnegan out of her thoughts. True love rallied to reunite these two and the journey they take together to help Station Seventeen raise money for new equipment and learn about themselves and their love for one another, is one heart stomping, Cajun fire hot story. The end is a smile maker that leaves you with a feel good energy.
Great read. I love second chance romances and Finn and January did not disappoint. I love the name January, always thought it was super cool and she TOTALLY lived up to it. The way she made a quick decision to accept Finn's apology and how she sincerely put it behind her is a great character trait. Most of us women, hold a grudge a long time, even after an heartfelt apology.
Finn has accomplished his goal, he won The Cup and bringing it home to make amends to his deceased friend seems to him closure until he remembers he also has to clear the air with January. I believe the way the writer wrote January as smart, quick-witted and genuinely loving to her friends, she could do nothing but forgive Finn once he made the decision to approach her.
What I didn't expect was for January (or Calendar Girl as Finn likes to call her) to so quickly move on after Finn's apology and then jump into a physical relationship with him. It was a refreshing change to what we as readers have become accustomed to reading. I definitely thought Finn would have to work really hard at the apology and friendship renewal....... LOL.
The second chance aspect only seems short term as Finn is waiting on a contract renewal to leave town, but both fall in love with each other and decisions become harder. I'm not giving the story away, but I will say that love triumphs in the end; and I was happy it didn't take a tragedy to make Finn realize the importance of his newfound love for January!
