I received a friend request on Goodreads the other day, and while I was checking out her profile I came across a book that caught my eye. Now the cover, while not perfect, was very eye-catching. A strong woman with determination in her eyes has a flash of green fire wrapped around her. The background looks a little dark and gloomy which makes the green fire POP. Now, I won’t say that a cover will make or break a book, but if my attention i

It's books like this one that remind me of why I love Netgalley so much. Who knows how long it would've taken me to stumble across this little gem otherwise?
I was a haunted house, and not the fun kind you visited on Halloween for cheap thrills. The scars on my back were nothing compared to the ones on the inside.

This book was perfection - action, mystery, romance, magic, humor, characters.

Let's start with the latter, shall we?

As a beginning of a series, this is pretty entertaining. I won't hold the nitpicks against it and I hope this is going to be a series.

Alice Worth is an MPI - a magic private investigator - in a world where humans live alongside other supernatural beings like mages, shifters and vampires. Certain group of mages are like criminal syndicates. Alice Worth is not the real name of the protagonist and she isn't some low level mage as she appears when someone tries to read her. She is hiding from her pa
This book starts out fast! As in once you open your kindle, don’t plan on getting any sleep. From the very beginning this story is constantly in motion. There is no down time, no moment that you might think you can close it and take a break.

Alice has a past that she has gone to great lengths to keep hidden. As a powerful mage she is a prize to those who would use her for their own gain. Running her own private investigation business, she takes on a case of a young woman who thinks she’s being p

Heart of Malice is a great debut for Lisa Edmonds. The storyline was pretty creative and so full of action that you can't really be bored with the story. I think it's pretty funny that one of my favorite characters is a ghost! Malcolm the ghost had me quite entertained throughout this book. I loved Sean, the werewolf. He was a great Hero. He was protective but not overbearing. He genuinely just wanted to spend time with Alice and help her. Alice was a harder character for me. She is hiding a pas ...more

Read again a year after before grabbing book 2. I really liked it the second time around too.

It will not win any brownie points for originality, but it was a decent read that grabbed me. I look forward to reading the second book.

I like it ... a lot! AT first Heart of Malice seems like a typical Kick-ass mage heroine but Alice Worth is darker (in person) and harsher. I like that there's no long paragraph explaining tidbit or how magic works but we see them through Alice's adventure. Good plot interesting characters especially Alice. first I think the book lacks emotion but since it's from Alice's POV and what i gather through is she was raised in to be a killing machine i think her POV suit. I was so put off by the cover art I kept passing on this book. So glad I finally read it.

HEART OF MALICE was a great introduction to what could be a pretty amazing new urban fantasy series. It ticks every box for a classic urban fantasy story: tough as nails heroine escaping from a murky past, fun magical abilities, and interesting enough plot complexities to last multiple books. The plot is fast-paced and revolves around an excellent magical mystery with earth shattering consequences should something go askew. I loved the attention to deta

-It feels more like a paranormal romance than urban fantasy.
-The first two sex scenes are before the 30% of the book.
-Im planning to continue with the series.

“There were all kinds of books: books that educated, books you read at the beach or on planes, books that sold bad advice…and books that could level whole cities.”

Well done Urban Fantasy is still my favorite genre, but as the years go on, after I read more so many that were subpar or overdone, and as the market has become saturated, finding new favorites is harder. This one was great fun and the whole series (I’m caught up on it) is a delight. This one pushed a lot of my generic I-Like-UF Bu

A very impressive beginning to a new series. Alice is a strong, powerful mage used at the hands of a nefarious cabal led by her grandfather. Now 5 years later, hiding from her past, and working as a Private Investigator. She lands some very interesting cases that drags her into danger. One compelling relationship with an alpha male and one confusing alliance with a vampire named Charles. Alice has strong mage abilities but that will be enough to protect herself from all those who want to use her ...more
Wow, this was totally cool, and nothing like what I expected.
It might not be the most original UF ever, but I just couldn't help but be drawn into this world.

Interesting enough to continue to the next.

Somewhat glad this is just Kindle Unlimited ... not sure if it'd make the grade as permanent buy.

But hey ... at least now I can determine that beforehand instead of regretting after. :p

Well this was a really interesting start to the series. Honestly, I almost feel like we didn't get enough backstory and maybe details to really build the world, and at the same time we got a lot of flashbacks that really helped with individual building the FMC in particular. Either way the world wasn't so complex that it was difficult to fall into, I just had a lot of unanswered questions really. I almost felt like this was a spin off series? maybe? I am going to need to do more research...

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

This is actually one of the first new urban fantasy series in awhile that I've really enjoyed. I think the world-building and the magic system is very interesting and all the characters were really great too. Alice has trouble letting people get close to her, but it's clear that she still really cares about them and wants to help. It's actually pretty funny because she's all brooding over in the corner like ~I wor
Alice Worth is hiding who she really is behind a mask, and a job as a private investigator. When she ends up running into a new client, meets a new man, and hires a ghost things go from lonely to crazy in a blink.

She must face these new people and new adversaries before it is too late.

This book was a great start to what I'm thinking will be an even better series. I loved the heroine. She was tough, had a really crazy past, and was a little bit prickly, but I loved her. I also really loved her

A story about a blood mage running from her grandfather and his cabal. The premise is really interesting but it sort of fell flat. This book is more of a mystery- we have a main character who is hired to find some missing books and during that time we meet a ghost that is a hanger on and Alice starts dating an alpha wolf. I thought she was too mean to him and he really jumped to do anything for her which didnt sit well w what I know of alphas so I was kinda annoyed. This book sets up intrigue

Almost so so so very good - and then it just all went down hill so very quickly. This book had so much promise to be an actual NEW urban fantasy and then bam! We fall down the same old rabbit hole and drink the same kool-aid that all the other kiddies are drinking and the entire story, concept and characters flatline. But hey, if that's your thing, be my guest - the kool aid is in the fridge.

This was very well written. I am a big fan of Seanan McGuire October Daye series, and this book had a similar feel to it with great world building with a little more romance. I highly recommend and cant wait for the next one to come out!

What a cracking read this is, and it seems to be Lisa's debut book!
I love when I find an author who can write books like this, with so many multi layers of plots, with interesting and varied characters that it keeps me gripped to the end.

There are so many paranormal reads out right now, and it seems 90% are one plot romances; those where its a meets b, and there's just one

When I read the description of this book, I thought it sounded like a good book and was eager to read it. I am happy to report that not only was it a good book, it was a great book! Alice was such a great character, with her being emotionally-removed and -scarred because of her violent past. I found myself feeling so much for her and found her to be very fascinating and wanting the best for her. Added to that, there was Sean, a werewolf Alpha who seemed to really care about her, who has the maki ...more
