The Rosary: Your Weapon for Spiritual Warfare

Rate this book
The Rosary is much more than an optional Catholic devotion for the old and dying. In fact, it is a vibrant and powerful intercessory tool in the hands of valiant spiritual warriors. From the moment Our Lady entrusted it to St. Dominic early in the thirteenth century, the rosary has been at the heart of authentic Catholic devotion. And yet it has also been an indispensable weapon in the hands of intercessors and those who actively resist the workings of the devil.

In The Rosary , Johnnette Benkovic, founder and president of Living His Life Abundantly and the founder of Women of Grace, teams up Thomas K. Sullivan, the creator of the Warrior Rosary, to explore why the rosary is the weapon for such a time as this. Together, they’ve gathered some of the most astonishing historical and contemporary accounts of victories associated with the rosary, along with their own inspiring personal experiences.

Readers will discover insights that will enhance their own experience of the rosary, including special prayers based on the lives and writings of the saints who understood the power of this classic Catholic devotion.

As an Irish Catholic I obviously am very familiar with the rosary and prayed it more times than I can count in my life. As a kid I remember dreading when the time would come for us to pray because it seemed to take forever, it was boring and seemingly pointless - just a horrible act my parents used to punish us or keep us from watching prime time television. As a teenager the boredom continued along with the frustration and resentment. I eventually taught myself to pray the rosary in English, Latin, Spanish, Italian and French so I could pray each decade in a different language in order to not get bored. That worked for a while but eventually when I got old enough to leave my parents house the praying stopped.

The problem was I had no real concept or understanding of what the rosary is or why we were praying it other than my parents telling us we had to because we were catholic. Reading this book has been an eye opening experience because the history behind the rosary is astounding. If I had been taught what is in this book when I was a kid I would've had a greater appreciation and respect for what we were doing but unfortunately my parents were not alone in the fact that at some point the knowledge and history of our faith had become secondary to just going through the motions.

This book is not just educational but it was actually written in a way that it made learning about the rosary interesting and had me flipping back and forth between pages to make sure I was soaking up everything the authors were trying to impart. The personal stories that were included from people to explain what the rosary meant to them and the impact it had on their lives made it seem so much more powerful and relative to everyday life. I also enjoyed the fact they didn't just focus on the prayers but the people behind them. Learning more about Joseph, the husband of Mary, St. Michael and others not only adds a greater depth to understanding why we say these particular prayers but also makes me glad to be doing something that in a way honors what they have provided to the faith. As a woman I was especially glad to see a focus on the females who have left their own impact on an otherwise male dominated belief system. Our Lady of Guadalupe, the saints and others have all left indelible and lasting impressions on what we do, what believe and created role models for us to look upon. Also including people from more recent times such as Maximilian Kobe show that the importance of the rosary was not left in the dust of history but is very alive and continues to play a much needed role in our lives.

Despite maintaining a cultural attachment to my faith I am in practice a lapsed Catholic. I appreciated the prayers and meditations that were included because I haven't prayed in such a long time I don't remember more than the basics.

I chose to read this book because I often like to read books that aren't necessarily my first picks to curl up with to see if I can find something worthwhile. I believe the mark of a good author is one who can reel you in when you sat down feeling apathetic about the material only to end up feeling invested. They did a wonderful job making this interesting and made me want to dust off my rosary now that I understand its importance.

As a non Roman Catholic Christian, the Rosary has still always held some mystery for me. Having spent a few years in a Catholic School I exposed enough to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, to only having the basic understanding that she was held in a higher holy regard by that denomination, and not mine.

"The Rosary: Your Weapon for Spiritual Warfare" is perfectly titled. Though it is written more for those familiar with the Rosary, and the prayers one says over the various days (I have prayed the Rosary during Lent many years, so I understood what was referred to by the author), there is still enough in here to delight the reader, like me, who likes to see and be reminded of the work and witness of those who have experienced the Spiritual realm.

Thus, the book is filled with grand stories surrounding those who regularly prayed the Rosary. Whether it be ships full of faithful in a major sea battle or Benedictines who lived near where the atomic bombs were dropped, this book will show how these faithful were spared the worst of fates through their prayerful acts.

Each chapter is topped off with a more personal experience about praying the Rosary from various individuals. If you regularly pray this and want to remember why, this is a good book for you. If you are new to the Rosary you might want to read up on the basics first before taking this on, though it will still delight you as long as you are willing to not understand the talk around the daily practices.

The Rosary: Your Weapon for Spiritual Warfare explores a number of topics. It begins with some powerful stories about the rosary and has a "call to arms" for prayer warriors. It then goes back to the beginning, sharing the start of spiritual warfare with Satan. There are chapters talking about the holy men and women that are in our prayer army as we, the Church Militant, have  at our side. The book concludes with several chapters talking about how to pray the rosary well. Throughout the book, there are personal reflections from different people who have experienced the power of the rosary.

I thought this was an excellent book. The stories of the influence of the rosary and the strength of holy men and women were both inspiring and motivating. It was difficult to read the book and not feel compelled to join in this spiritual fight against Satan. I thought the personal reflections at the end of each chapter were a fantastic addition. It provided a nice balance to action-inspiring content. It was also nice to read stories that felt a little more relatable - people who struggled to pray the rosary, people who were indifferent to it, people facing big challenges in their lives - it addressed very real, earthly struggles with a spiritual strategy. All in all, the mission laid out in the book was clear: there were compelling reasons why we can't stay complacent in the face of spiritual attacks, the support team was established, and the "weapon" had clear directions for its use and explanations why it was a good choice.

That being said, I do have two criticisms. The bigger one is that I think that chapters 10-12 should've been in the reverse order. It would've made sense to start with how to pray the rosary, then share specific reflections on the mysteries, and end on how to move forward and get others to pray the rosary. The other problem I had was the instructions to purchase this book. I'm already reading it; I don't need to be told to buy it. That being said, these are very minor criticisms, and in my mind, it would not be fair to downgrade my rating of this excellent book over a few minor flaws.

Overall, I think this is an excellent book for any Christian who wants to pray better against the attacks of Satan.

I found this book an excellent description of just what the Rosary offers us in our prayer life. Many miracles have been attributed to its use. It offers a direct path to Jesus Christ through the meditation on his life and passion. It is my favorite prayer and I feel so close to God when I am praying it.

I have found that indeed this prayer is a very strong weapon against spiritual warfare. Anyone who thinks that the devil and his minions don't exist is very foolish. He works tirelessly to snatch souls away from God. The new world order that denies this evil is doing the devils work.

This book explains the scriptural basis for the rosary and the evils that are there to befall us on our journey through this life.

I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in understanding the rosary.

For those of you who pray the Rosary, this is a wonderful addition to your Catholic library. For those of you who think about praying the Rosary, or think the Rosary is for little old women, this is a must read for you. As Kathleen Beckman states on the back cover, "Reads like a manual for victory over God's enemies and ours...". The co-author, Thomas Sullivan, a military guy, adds his masculine touch to the book, and gave me a whole new perspective on the whole concept of praying the Rosary. It is broken down into manageable chapters, interspersed with "Rosary Stories" by people like Scott Hahn and Fr. Wade Menezes, it is also filled with the exuberance and passion of Johnnette Benkovic. I am thinking I need to buy a copy for each of my brothers. Chapter 3, The Primordial Battle, is awesome!!

I got so much more out of this book than expected. It was “easy” to read, meaning it was simple to understand but also a pleasure to learn and be inspired by its beautiful language. It’s more than just a book about the rosary... Yes, it goes into Marian history and tradition, in addition to describing some of her apparitions. But it also gives some history on some male and female saints that used the rosary as their lifeline - as a devotion to Mary and a conduit to feeling a deeper relationship with Christ. Reciting the rosary can be used as a spiritual weapon against temptation and a way to empower us with grace and mercy, much needed in this world.

Overall a good book. My favorite sections were the miracles of the rosary and the lives of selected saints. I did find the constant use of militaristic terminology a little off putting though.
