This is not what I was expecting.. AT ALL. I didn't realize that this was considered a horror manga, albeit it's not a scary story necessarily, but the situation is scary for the characters. I went in thinking this was going to be some happy go lucky story about kids at an orphanage.. BOY WAS I WRONG. What the hell did I just read??

Okay, so I was recommend The Promise Neverland by someone either on Twitter or on my Youtube community board when I asked for manga recommendations. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GETTING INTO. I thought that this manga was going to be about a group kids that were living in this orphanage that maybe went on some adventures because they lived in a post apocalyptic world. I was wrong. Perfection!!

I watched the anime and now I'm starting to read the manga - both are spectacular!
Anime is atmospheric and beautifully done, with amazing production value and great soundtrack (that's been stuck in my head for days now).
Manga is detailed, beautiful and fast paced.
Also - the whole thing is pretty Dark. In the best of ways.

You can do either one, but honestly, for something this good I have no regrets for spending my time doing both. I cannot wait to read the next volumes!

Woooooow what a PROMISING start! So far this manga has already surpassed my expectations. The prison escape mystery horror kind of story is definitely what I need in my life right now! The dynamic between Emma, Norman and Ray is my favorite thing about this series. The art is quite simplistic yet expressive and aesthetically pleasing, the plot is captivating, the pacing is just right. I’m hooked fam!

Kids, demons, a dystopian world. Sure sounded like an interesting premise, but... Maybe it's just not for me. The storytelling is incredibly repetitive, survival is presented like some Hercule Poirot mystery, and it's all just a bit drab. I might have liked this as a child - but it didn't keep me interested enough now. It finally ends. I'd been following this manga since the beginning so it felt good following it till the end. I loved the characters and the storyline. My only complain is how the story became convoluted after the Goldy pond Arc. The mangakas started pulling off things willy nilly. Imo the story could've ended 20-25 chapters short. A lovely house in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a wall with a gate, happy kids playing around... but are they really happy? And why can't they leave?

I will try to skirt around most of the details as possible. :P

From the start of the manga I just knew something was up, but what? Well, we don't find out until Conny leaves. After that, and the shocking revelation that came with it (and gruesomeness), our MC and her friends are going to do everything they can to get the hell out of this place A lovely house in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a wall with a gate, happy kids playing around... but are they really happy? As you can see I am keeping it nice and vague. I don't want to spoil too much of the surprise.

I have to say the first chapters were the best, after that it kind of lost its momentum at times, and there was A LOT of talking. At times I was tuning out because there was just too much chatting and too little doing. I get that they need a good plan, especially considering all the facts they have, but really, gee, wiz, if they keep on talking like this they will never be able to leave.

I am really curious about the world these kids live in. Are there places just like the one they are in? Where do the new kids come from? Is the whole world like this? Is it safe anywhere? How did it all come to this? We get some hints here and there, like that everything was still rosy and cute in 2015 (the current time is 2045), or about Mama (which peaks my interest, why was she selected?).

The MC, Emma, is a pretty nice girl. Very energetic, and I was amazed at how well she could stand up against what happens in this book. How hard she worked, how even though her friends told her of the dangers if she wanted x, she kept on going. She is sweet towards the kids, really helping out, and making them smile.

We also have Norman and Ray, both are decent characters, though I am not too sure if I trust both of them that much. As they are with Emma I like them, but when they are alone... there are just too many flags going up.

The manga is pretty creepy, it definitely had a Higurashi/Umineko vibe.

The art though... eh, not my favourite, not the style I like.

But will I keep on reading? Yes, though I hope the next volume will bring a bit more action and more excitement. Maybe a bit more on the world/what is going on, and maybe the escape, or at least a try at escaping.

I would recommend this book to everyone.

Chapter 1 THE GRACE FIELD HOUSE
I have seen this anime and it is just great. Now I decided to read the manga because I want to have another experience of this story. I just love this. The first chapter is just scary and sad that Norman and Emma finally knew the truth.

Chapter 2. THE WAY OUT

That last part about “Mom” I’m not sure if I have seen it on the anime or not. Well anyway, I just hated her self preservation acts. 🙄 She annoys me a lot. I also didn’t know that “Mom” is checking Emma’s pulse!! OMG! Thank goodness Emma didn’t panic. She is amazing for her age.

Chapter 4. THE BEST OPTION
Ray is a cool person. He is frank always. 😁 It makes him unique but the way he cares about Emma and Norman is really sweet. I love that about him. Though he has a point, he doesn’t really like thinking of impossible things. But Norman and Emma are great to fight all odds just to escape and survive. Wohooooo. Way to go. 😁

Chapter 5. SHE GOT US!
This “Mom” is really good. She is just smart and know how to handle things. She knows what things will occupy the children’s head and completely divert their expectations. Now the golden three feels stuck. They’re such in a tight situation.

Chapter 6. CAROL AND KRONE
Another guard for the kids. Another additional headache for them. Isabella is really trying all precaution just to preserve her pride and honor. Emma, Norman and Ray are really trying their best to outwit Isabella. Hopefully soon. 😁

Chapter 7. WE’RE COUNTING ON YOU
Finally! Emma found the tracker. She’s such a smart kid to notice it sooner. Sister Krone is also a really ambitious person. Though she is wrong to think of taking Grace field that way, but she has a point. I like that she is practical. 😁 She is competitive and doesn’t want to be left behind. 😁

I just watched Made In Abyss and really enjoyed it. The Promised Neverland gives the same vibe. Kids in a anime being in danger is nothing new, but the sharp turn from happy and go lucky to darkness is jarring but both Made in Abyss and Promised Neverland feel earned.

So good. Totally didn’t expected this to be so dark, but I love it.

The world is so interesting and the art is stunning.

I like Emma so far, but her character feels a bit flat. (Side note: I don’t know if it’s just me, but it’s so hard to find an interesting and complex female protagonist in manga/anime. It’s my mission to find a favourite female character.)

Ray is my favourite type of character in manga/anime; quiet, calculating, clever and so on.

The Promised Neverland is widely popular ongoing manga and its anime adaptation is airing this winter season, I got so invested into the story after watching the first episode so I decided to read the manga alongside the anime run so when s1 ends I can seamlessly keep on following the story via manga format.
