The only thing that I would change about this book is the title! I would prefer "the student guide to the..." or "anyone who wants to know more about..."
I loved this very clever and informative book. Krull does a masterful job of telling this historical period from start to finish, but what she excels in is adding information about women and ethnic minorities which are often omitted from "his"tory books. She also dispels age old myths and explains the facts around them. The pace is excellent, and I couldn't put the book down. I learned more from her book than I ever did from my US History classes about the American Revolution.
I would definitely recommend this book to any high school student who is studying this topic. Facts come to life, and the reader isn't bored as her pacing and inserts of related information lighten the topic. I think that middle school students would also like it, as well as adults of any age!

Why all the Obama quotes? Serious Liberal leaning to this book. 😕

This book is about the 13 American colonies revolting against the mother country, Britain.
First, the colonies lived prosperously, until Britain prevented them from moving Westward. They also forced them to buy goods that the colonists did not want, and the colonists thought that Britain went too far. One event, the Tea Party, includes the story that the colonists dressed up as Mohawk Indians and went aboard and dumped one to two million dollars’ worth of tea. The British governor was very angry and immediately charged Samuel Adams and John Hancock for high treason and wanted them to be hanged, drawn, and quartered.
The War started and the colonists started something called the militias. When the armies first met, the colonists used guerilla tactics such as ambushing others to win. One time, Ethan Allen and his men had a sneak attack on one of the forts, making the commander surrender. The colonists also had a Declaration of Independence.
Later, the colonist army chose George Washington as the army commander, and he led a lot of victories.
Finally, the British army gave in and finally the colonists became the very first Americans.
The win for the Americans depended on a lot of things: mistakes of Britain, luck, guerilla tactics, and even more. Britain didn’t want to give in earlier because they wanted power and they wanted to rule.

A concise and compact book about the American Revolution.
Not growing up in the US, and the fact that I have limited knowledges about that period of time, this book is extremely helpful for me to get to know some of the major players and battles of both sides of the war. I adore the illustrations and some humors. "A Kids' Guide to the American Revolution" makes a perfect learning companion to young readers.

I received this through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
This is a standard children's nonfiction work, which describes the American Revolution. It provides a quick summary of a lengthy topic, covering more depth than most works of its kind. There is a strong focus on famous individuals of the time. It expresses what those individuals did during the war and after.

A concise and easy to read introduction to the founding of America. Kids 10-12 will find it accessible and helpful. The author mentions little to nothing about the role religion played. Maybe it's because of the brevity of the book but most likely religion is not addressed because the book "supports the common core state standards" which are terrible at addressing religious influences on history.

A lot of facts that would be useful to anyone wanting to know more about this era of our nation's history.
