Schools: A Niche Market for Authors

Rate this book
Award- winning author and former teacher Jane R. Wood shares the many strategies she has used since 2004 to successfully market and sell her books to schools. In 2014, a large school district purchased 6,400 copies of one of her juvenile fiction books. Wood tells authors how to tap into this unique market—whether a children’s picture book, a middle reader, a YA book, or a fiction or nonfiction book appropriate for older students. Authors will learn how to contact schools; how to develop relationships with educators; how to create educational resources for their book; and how to develop dynamic presentations for an author visit. Wood shows how both teachers and students can benefit from a meaningful connection with a publisher author.

Do you visit schools with your books for children? If so, you know how the students love to meet you and you love to meet the students. Everyone, teachers included, has a great time. Now, I admit
I’ve only made a few school visits. Since I enjoyed the ones I did, I hope to change that soon.
Author Jane R. Wood’s book SCHOOLS A NICHE MARKET FOR AUTHORS sort of helped me make the decision for more visits. The author starts her book by mentioning that your books should have educational value. She then goes on to explain why and how you can do it. Class time is valuable, so see what you have that might go along with what is being taught. Don’t forget to make the stories fun as well as educational. Create activities to go along with the books.

The author has a lot of good information on how to have a successful school visit. Combine your ideas with hers, adjusting them perhaps to suit your books, and the students, as well as you, will have a successful visit.

Just reading SCHOOLS A NICHE MARKET FOR AUTHORS inspires me to get busy for this coming year and share my work with the children the books are written for. How about you?
