Prisoner of Dreams

HAZARDOUS CARGO

Captain Jo-lac of the freighter Raptor didn't want any complications in her life, but she needed to sign a cargo and get on with business. So when she found herself cheated out of a contract, she was forced to accept a prisoner-transport run from the Military Authority.

But neither the prisoner, Lewis, nor the job were what Jo expected. Though genetically classified a Class Ten -- a virtual vegetable -- Lewis appeared surprisingly normal. And even before Raptor could pull out-of-system, she was nearly destroyed by an MA cruiser. Jo took the attack personally and was determined to discover just what her prisoner was and why her employers wanted him dead.

As each step she took dragged her deeper into a conspiracy she sought to avoid, Jo began to suspect that her greatest danger was Lewis -- for against her better judgment, her interest in the enigmatic prisoner was becoming all too personal...

I enjoyed the premises with which the book opens- how we drove ourselves to space and the changes in human culture that created. The protagonist initially seems well developed, but there's some wilting flower romance novel crap in the later half that was disappointing.

A scifi romance pulp novel that's actually a lot better than it should be.

Written by Karen Ripley which, given the many easter eggs in this book, I assumed was an alias. And I was right. Her real name was Mary K. Urhausen (1948 - 2018), a veterinarian from Wisconsin. She wrote some Star Wars fan fiction and 5 books, Prisoner of Dreams being her first.

The love for Star Wars is obvious in this book. The main character, Captain Jo-Lac of the freighter Raptor is basically a female version of Han Solo and his Millennium Falcon.
She has to escort a prisoner to another planet, but things are not quite as they seem and soon enough, Captain Jo and her crew are running (flying) for their lives as they are hunted down by the Military Authority.

This book doesn't break any boundaries or pose philosophical questions, but it's obviously written by someone who loves space adventures.

Now, let's see if there's some way I can track down the sequel The Tenth Class.

Jo, against her better judgment, takes on an IS, Lewis, from Military Authority. As she is leaving the port on her space craft, Raptor, she is almost fried. What is going on?!
