Avery Black #2

Razão para Correr

Rate this book

Continuing with Blake Pierce’s Avery Black series, I sought to learn a little more about the protagonist and her various skills. As the novel opens, it would seem that Detective Avery Black has earned more than simply a new title within Boston PD’s Homicide Squad. Partnered up with Dan Ramirez, they are also loosely trying to define a romantic relationship, while not letting it get between their work assignments. After a heroic hostage negotiation, Black and Ramirez are called to the scene of a crime aboard a yacht—at the mayor’s request, no less—where a woman’s body is found, with an odd star traced upon it. Black and Ramirez begin their investigation, invading another jurisdiction, and soon find themselves in the middle of a gang fight. Have no fear, Black pulls out some of her martial arts training, stunning both the gang and those on the force around her. Still no further ahead with her case, Black continues to inch closer to her daughter, Rose, who is about to take early acceptance to college. Their rocky past is something that Avery hopes to erase, though it will not be easy. It would seem that as soon as work calls, Detective Avery Black is out the door, leaving everything else to perish. However, when she is stumped, she turns to the only person who appears able to help. A visit to see Howard Randall, the man she defended in court when she was still a criminal attorney, may hold all the answers. While others frown on this Hannibal/Clarice interaction, Black secretly likes the information she can gather. Randall seems to fill a father role that is missing in her life. Working off a new angle, Black tries to push ahead with the case, though comes to notice that everything in her world is coming apart: Ramirez is distancing himself, Rose is scorned that she is again losing her mother, and the Homicide Squad no longer has her back. All this takes her back to her childhood, when she had no one to help. With a killer on the loose who continues to play games, Black will have to compartmentalise for a while longer and let the pieces of her life fall where they may. Another great novel in the series that keeps the reader on their toes. Recommended for those who like shorter mysteries and police procedurals, as well as the reader who enjoys female protagonists.

The gamble to continue with the series has paid off already, as I am fully committed to seeing where things go. Avery Black remains a complex character, whose backstory is woven into the present-day storyline. The reader learns of her horrible upbringing and how she was tossed into foster care, which hardened her when she realised no one could protect her. This may have benefits, but it is destroying her relationships in the presents: familial, romantic, and professional. Her work ethic is like no other, though this tunnel vision could be troublesome in the bigger picture. An ongoing interaction with serial killer Howard Randall seems to be working, as long as Black can stay at arm’s length, though there is surely something Blake Pierce wants the reader to know without saying it quite yet. There are others that surround Black and support her throughout this piece, including Dan Ramirez. He is more prominent in the book, though still stands in the shadow of the overly single-minded Black. Their interactions are sometimes strained, though I really cannot wait to see if they can shake off the dust and prove to be great partners. The story was again strong and held my attention with a number of hints sprinkled throughout the narrative. A mix of shorter and more developed chapters will keep the reader forging ahead and making sure they can solve the case before the killer gets the better of everyone. Adding a little education within the narrative also provides the reader with some additional treats, should they feel the desire to take it all in. I have the next book ready and should begin it now, as Avery Black waits for no one.

Kudos, Mr. Pierce, for impressing me again with your strong story. I cannot wait to see what twists await me.

I like this series. I enjoy the writing and the mystery and how Avery puts the pieces together. I have only one problem with this book and it bugged me since page 1...............seriously I would expect the author to remember the criminal in the first book was Edwin PESH en not Edwin PEET. Not trying to mean or obnoxious because if I read the second book in a series and actually am on my way to get the third the books are good (in my opinion anyway) but that tiny error really bugged me every time they referred to that case. Right, complaining done, I enjoyed the book and I am looking forward to the 3rd

Crime ! Énigme !

Avery...

I don't like her, there is nothing redeeming about her. The failed relationship with her daughter or her disregard for men and colleagues to get her own way. She is so much of a b*tch , I cannot identify with her character and, what would be a good book, is instead mediocre at best.

Avery Blake is a former lawyer, now Boston detective. Hot on the heels of a high profile serial killer case, Avery is once again called in to investigate yet another serial killer. Will she find the killer before it’s too late?

This book was difficult to read. I was frustrated with the main character and the storyline, yet I did want to find out what happened with the serial killer so I was compelled to read on hoping things would get better. They didn’t.

Avery Blake is an incredibly unlikable character. To me, she was shallow, selfish and irritating. I hated the way she treated her daughter – as though she were an annoyance, rather than her own flesh and blood. Her other relationships were pathetic. I get it…she was damaged from her childhood in foster care, but did she have to go around treating everyone so badly because of that?

Much of the “police procedures” had me shaking my head in disbelief. For example, Avery and her partner/part-time boyfriend go into a major drug dealer’s place of business to question him. Guns are drawn on both sides and Avery and Ramirez are ultimately asked to leave their guns in an outer room while they have a chat with the drug dealer. They easily oblige. I’m pretty sure this would be frowned upon by any actual police department. But, never fear, when things go south, Avery is able to single-handedly take down not only the hulking drug dealer, but five of his henchmen.

The parts where Avery feels it necessary to consult with now incarcerated serial killer Howard Randall was a little too Silence of the Lambs for me. In fact, I found very little to like in this book.

According to the title, this is book two in the Avery Blake mystery series so maybe things get better from here. It really doesn’t compel me to read book number one.

IT'S IN THE STARS!

Avery Blake runs into a killer who is interested in astrology. She has a hard time figuring out who the killer is , it seems because her personal life is not only getting in the way, but this killer is really "out there!" It seems like she may need to take a break Good read, Blake Pierce, in my opinion really doesn't disappoint.

I'm shocked...

3.5 Estrelas, 3.5 Corações e muitas conjunções astrais para tanta referência astrológicas. ;)

If you loved Hannibal Lecter, Silence of the Lambs, or anything else that involved counseling from a murderer who is quite insightful- this book is worth the read.

Going into this book, which sadly for me was mid series, I fell in love with the MO of the murderer. The thought process behind such a complicated form made the mystery part of the novel stand out on its own.

Relationships between Avery Black with her family, friends, and coworkers made me fall even more into the story. Avery isn't the perfect person, though manages to also be a perfect police officer. The author made it clear which persona Avery would take, being family or work. Having this little extra drama added in with the already mysterious killings going on, spiked my interest in the novel.

Would definitely reread this book, hopefully actually reading the first book and not the second first.

Excellent Detective

Who was killing young women and moving the bodies without being seen. It appeared the women were strategically placed but how were they related?

Great mystery and we'll worth the time to read.

The author just doesn’t disappoint. Halfway the book and I got some idea of the plot and had a laugh that this was so predictable but it wasn’t. Again no unnecessary plots, again a good storyline. But the suspense should have been cleared by the end. Someone like me, who wants to get the back story or at least some sort of reason behind everything, this series, while solving the case, leaves few things to the imagination and hence an unquenched thirst lives on.

After reading this second book in the series I'm finding the main character a little hard to take at times. She's not had an easy go of things but at the same time it's almost as if she sabotages her own well being. It's probably a necessary character flaw but it's frustrating to read sometimes. I want to reach into the pages and slap her. Overall however, the story was good. I enjoyed the solving of the mystery. I'm a little creeped out by the protagonist's attachment to Howard's character and I think his insight to current crimes is perhaps a little far fetched. I get that he thinks like a serial killer but I can't figure out how he makes such immediate jumps to the message that the killer is trying to convey. I'm not sure if I'll get the next book or not. I'd like to see what happens with Avery but I don't know if I can keep reading about her constant self doubt and introspection without getting completely annoyed. The character is damaged but she keeps going in circles, never seeming to get past some things. Then again, it's only the second in the series. Maybe I'm just impatient.

I highly recommend this book. The lead character is real and believable. She is a hero but she has her faults. Rarely does a book evoke from me the need to yell at a character and yet this book does, along with scenes that make me want to cry (But you will have to read the book yourself to find out which scenes they are). The characters are well developed and evolving through the series. The plot is amazing and compelling. Waiting for book #3 to see if the author continues the excellent writing for the next book in the series.

I don't like to be negative, but I don't see any way around it. I've given this author chance after chance, but I'm done.

It's ok for a character to be selfish, arrogant, and unlikable; however, that character has to have some redeeming quality or readers can't get invested. The main character of this series is Avery Black. She's selfish, arrogant, and unlikable. There's nothing for me to like. I don't feel sorry for her. I can't commiserate with her. I just don't care about her. I. Don't. Care.

By far the worst part of this novel is the editing. There are so many grammatical errors! No self-respecting author should misuse the word "broke" multiple times (at least 4!). Any editor who misses that many mistakes should be fired!

It's really a shame because the plot wasn't half bad.

Liked this one better than the first, except one thing that drove me crazy! The name of the killer from the first book is spelled differently in this book than it was in the first book. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't read the books back to back. But it is a faux pas, in my eyes.

Anyway, my newly favorite intelligent social moron is back! Beautiful Avery Black and all that implies. Messing up relationships, making bad decisions, losing her cool, yup, they all happen again. Around and round we go. But has always she finds her bad guy and takes him down! You go girl!

Gritty, Single-Minded Protagonist

Avery Black is single-minded to the exclusion of everything in her life except her goal - whether a not-guilty verdict for a client, as in her past life, or as the capture or rendering impotent the serial killers she hunts. (The author's views on the psychology of the criminal mind don't dovetail with mine; the story is readable and "entertaining".)

Unread shelf project 2021: book 24.

Whewwww Avery was a hot mess in this book — I mean, she was a hot mess in the first book but in the second, she took it up a notch. Somehow. 😂

This was another riveting, fast-paced story though and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Pierce’s books are not high quality lit but they are fantastic brain candy. And that’s what I need now more than ever. Escapism at its finest!

This is the 2nd in the series about Avery Black. She was a high dollar lawyer, living the good life, then turned to being a policemen. She had to give up being a lawyer because she represented a serial killer, who she got off, then days later he killed again. Everyone blamed her and her life fell apart.

Now she is a homicide detective and is great a solving the cases. She doesn't play by the rules and gets in trouble most of the time. This time she is called in on a case of what they think is a serial killer.
This one bases his kills on the planets and astrology.

While trying to be a good mother, she fails again. Her daughter isn't talking to her and her ex-husband wants nothing to do with her. So her private life is a mess. Not to mention, this serial killer is getting to close to home. Will Avery's ambition be the death of one of her family?

Another suspenseful book to enjoy!

Cause To Run

A great 2nd installment in the Avery Black Mystery series. As with Blake Pierce's other hard-as-nails, tough women cops and FBI agents, Avery lives her job, never giving herself a break in the dark and dangerous world of the monsters she hunts every day. You won't be disappointed in this series or any of the main characters here, and the constant threats and nail-biting action will keep you on the edge of your seat with your pulse racing. The only question I have for Mr. Pierce is: Why was the criminal's name changed from Edwin Pesh in Book 1 (Cause To Kill) to Edwin Peet in the beginning of this Book 2? This was a bit confusing, but obviously I was able to proceed, lol. As with all of Mr. Pierce's books that I have been devouring this past week, this is a definite 5 stars and 5 thumbs-up! 👍👍👍👍

There are a lot of parallels to the first book and I wasn’t a huge fan. It seemed like same font different size. At some point the daughter got involved in the whole thing and nearly got killed and the gang fight at the start? It was just not it. Finally at the end of the second book we’re finally seeing some form of character development in the main character however I was expecting to see it a lot sooner and not just in the final chapter especially how the end of the first book left off. It was not my cup of tea however if you are a fan of murder mysteries where everything seems to not work out at all for anyone and then the stars magically align (quite literally in this book with the whole astrology scene) and then everything work out in the end then I would definitely recommend this series.

Cause to Run is the second book in the Avery Black series but it could be read as a stand alone without any problem. I've got really mixed feelings about this story. It moved along at a good pace and was interesting enough to keep me reading but the main character, Avery, grates at me. I understand that she is a workaholic with OCD tendencies and a troubled past. What I don't understand is why that means she has to be so abrasive and unlikable. It seems that for every step she takes forward in her professional and personal life, she takes two steps back a minute later. The story is okay but the problem is you have to get past Avery to enjoy it.

For those who want to know: this one has language and violence. An 18+ read.

A very intense and suspenseful read!

‘Cause to Run,’ is book two in An Avery Black Mystery, and a very plot driven read.
Detective Avery Black, having just come off her previous case, is feeling very optimistic and hopeful about her personal life. Her relationship with her daughter has vastly improved and the budding relationship with her partner give her a sense of security. That is until she is pulled into another murder investigation, at another division. All eyes are upon her once again, and she fines herself becoming consumed by yet another serial killer case. A fact that pulls at the fragile strings holding her blossoming personal relationship... Will Avery be able to pull her life back together? Or will this case destroy her second chance??

Exciting read with chills and thrills!

Loved the characters. Avery, so strong from a haunted and unimanginable past, yet seriously damaged within from her abusive life from childhood. She struggles with her current place in life, her job, family, relationships, and the desire to right the past, leaving the reader just as frustrated with her as she is with herself. Pierce captures the reader from page one, and takes hold of their emotions and curiosity of trying to understand what lies beneath and hidden within the evil lurking in the mind of a serial killer. I read book one and was not disappointed with book two and eager to begin book three. I recommend this series. The author creates a well executed plot and captivating read for those who love mysteries.

Unintentionally ugly individualism

The author unintentionally created an ugly heroine who is talented, capable and dedicated with unbelievable ugly individualism. The Avery character is incredibly insecure at her work causing her bullying her colleagues, often having shouting match with her boss, breaking and entering without permission, and water boarding and hitting suspects. There are numerous places where Avery shouted “I did…”, “I want…”, always “I”. The worst of this book is that the author unconsciously repeated a plot from another book, The Silence of The Lambs, where the heroine and a psychic killer become one item; the killer became a mentor, father and more. The difference is that the characters in this book are shallow and rawly.

This isn't the typical genre I read, but I have to tell you, sometimes it's worth it to take a chance, expand your horizons and immerse yourself into something different. In this case, this book turned out to be so much fun! It's very well written, Blake Pierce, gave such vivid descriptions and events and incredible character building. She just made the story so real to me. It happened.

I found myself searching for the places described using Google Earth. And yes the places are real locations. I loved that! I could not put this book down. I can keep on going here and give details, but I won't bore you and spoil it, lol. This one is a must read 😊<<<

Pretty unbelievable. Not sure how the ratings are so high on this book. Avery, a police detective, is called in to tackle the case, even though it is not in her jurisdiction. Avery routinely does stupid stuff for a cop. Plus she treats everyone around her like crap. She is able to fight off 5 thugs, with only her hands and a bat. When she gets shot at, the bullets whiz by her head. She punches a suspect in custody, when trying to get information from him. She is taken off the case, but continues to work it. I can suspend disbelief sometimes, but for this novel, you have to suspend disbelief the entire book.
