The book is about 2 best friends(Gay) from middle class family. What all they go through to stay together for lifetime. The story will grip you and keep you turning the pages, it will keep you guessing. The way author has written it, makes you feel you are integral part of the story and it is happening right in front of you. In fact I am eagerly waiting for the next book by the author.
**Not for people who don't believe in LGBT community**.

I read this book in a few sittings! The author takes us through time to depict this beautiful love story. The story originates in Mumbai and takes it path to New Jersey. With a bold story line that challenges cultural norms, the author expresses emotions of the lead characters in a vivid and somewhat poetic manner. Highly recommend for folks that like stories of the heart.
The leads Sonia and Esha get awaken by their true love for each other after several years. They endure challenges while fulf

The author has done an exceptional job with her debut novel. It was impossible to put down the book, once I started reading it. There are not many books that deal with this topic with so much sensitivity. The emotions are portrayed beautifully. Can't wait to read the next book by Mita!

A poignant love story that spans several years from high school in Mumbai to adulthood in New Jersey, this was a highly interesting read. The story captures your attention from the first few pages and you're taken on this trip through memory lane with images of food, shopping, family dynamics and school life.
I'd definitely recommend this as a good read for subject matter as well as style of writing. If you're a fan of contemporary Indian writing, this is definitely a good read.
Looking forward to

Enjoyed reading it to a point that I was able to finish it in few hours. Can't believe it is Authors Debut novel. It is sweet, believable and has perfect pacing and dialogue. Story is set in Mumbai,India. Main characters are from a middle class family. It takes you through a journey of main characters roller coaster ride of finding their true self and acknowledging it, and also dealing with family expectation, social pressure and letting go of your own wishes to make everyone around them happy. ...more

I was recently presented with a book called Breaking Norms by Mita Balani, a book about finding and losing love, nontraditional relationships, and tolerance. This wasn’t my typical book that I like to read, because of the lesbian romance. I am not against same-sex relationships, it’s just not a topic that I lean toward when looking for something to read. I actually quite enjoyed this book, and the love between Sonia and Esha was pure and beautiful, but the fact that the women are from India mean ...more

Breaking Norms is a story of two Indian girls living in Mumbai. It’s a tale of friendship, love and the struggle to be together as a same-sex couple.

This is my first LGBT novel. It is very difficult to understand the feelings of a lesbian couple for a normal reader. This topic is still a taboo to talk about in Indian society. I could empathize with the characters of Soni and Esha. I could feel their pain when their family and even their best friend couldn't accept them initially and put a lot o

I must admit that when I was first approached to read this book, I was apprehensive. I've never read any LGBT love story before and I wasn't sure what to expect.....and whatever it was that I thought I was expecting flew out the window as soon as I read Sonia's words. Given her Indian culture and background, I'm sure Sonia would be just as confused about her feelings towards the same sex but she knew what was love and for who....and from the beginning, she was sure this was the person she was me ...more

I was given a advanced copy of this book to read and review and was asked to give an honest review. The cover looks so pretty and inviting. I found this a interesting read about a lesbian love affair in India. I felt like I was taken on a journey through out the book and I especially loved the food talk. The author's message is a bold one but done sensitively as she says you all deserve a chance and embrace it. I look forward to more from Mita Balani.
