Jubokko is about the closest to a vampire there is. There are cannibalistic Yokai, however, like Yamanba and the jikininki, who could be considered 'vampiric'. A Chinese myth of a vampire called Jiangshi does exist, but I don't know if there was an equivalent of that in Japan. I'm not sure if the book talks about this or not, but hope that helps.(less)

Hiiragi's mother just passed away and revealed he has a half brother! Excited by the prospect of family he investigates only to learn his brother, Karasu, is a short, mysterious guy who disdains family and runs a secret shop renting out yokai from inside his exotic pet shop. For civil servant Hiiragi this is dastardly crime...!

The art is very good... It has that typical modern style that most manga has today. The characters are distinct and rec

I actually really enjoyed this random find manga. The artwork is quite good, the story and premise are interesting and the characters are mysterious and intriguing. It has a surprisingly dark edge to the story and this first volume sets up a lot of things I’m excited to continue reading about. Although it has familiar elements, it manages to be unique enough not to re-hash other similar manga. Really looking forward to continuing the series and finding out more.

This is nothing like what I was expecting, but in the best way possible!

This was creepy and all kinds of weird, but I really liked it. At first, it was looking like it might be a little too much, something left for another time. But, it was just enough ghostly and supernatural vibes to keep me reading. Plus, the two main characters are very interesting, to say the least. They are what make this work, aside from that shop that has all those blood curdling, goosebumps for days, otherworldly creatures.

I couldn't wait and got the rest of the volumes in this series, whi

This book is rated Teen and has some yokai on human violence as well as some grave robbing so use your best judgment before handing this to a younger reader.

I for one am a bit of a yokai enthusiast loving the stories as well as classical artwork that survived even during a time when the Japanese government was trying abolish the yokai tales so seeing this book for half off I threw it in the basket and got to reading it in time for Halloween when the spirits are closest to the world o

Not really sure how I feel about this series. On the one hand, it's clearly meant to be horror. But, on the other hand, they keep tossing in these moments that I think are meant to be funny, but just sort of fall flat. For example, every time Karasu makes his appearance, he sort of tumbles in, hanging on his bandages like a weird Circ du Soleil performer, and since it's not scary, and it's not particularly engaging otherwise, I think it's meant to be funny. Spoiler, it's not funny--just sort of weird ...more

Hiragi meets his half-brother and finds out he owns a supernatural petshop.

People: supernatural petshop!! What more do you need??

Karasu, the owner, comes flying down from the ceiling wrapped in bandages. Stodgy Hiragi, a public servant who is proud to be just that, thinks this new half-brother has lost his mind. Customers come in to rent a supernatural to help them get things that aren't always the nicest - revenge - but sometimes are - protection from bullies. And Karasu

It's not bad but it leaves you with nothing but questions. I Hope the second book answers a lot of my questions. I love Karasu (The character rapped in bandages) and how he has his whole yokai shop rapped up. The character design is great the plot twists make it kind of sketchy. I hope the second book at least answer's 1:) who and what their father is, 2:) how his brother is what he is, 3:) what is Karasu and a bunch more.

This was an enjoyable manga. I like the character dynamics and how they play off each other. I always love the flamboyant behavior. The ending was unexpected and I'm curious to see where the story goes.

I'm not sure if I liked this or not. The story was interesting and the yokai were cool. The shop owner brother, I think, was what I didn't like. Maybe it was the other brother as well.

I didn't hate it though. It had a complex plot, which gets slowly revealed.
Skye (Skye's Scribblings)
Not quite as good as I'd been hoping but a little more interesting than I was expecting with both an unusual yet also rather familiar premise with intriguing characters and twists. Might give the second volume a try.

Another amazing horror story by the creator the did Nightmare Inspector.

A interesting set up for a series with a nice touch of horror with the designs of the yokais and what happens to the people who decide to rent a yokai.
