This timeless tale tells children the story of the crucifixion from the viewpoint of Rex, the tree that became the cross Jesus carried to Calvary. It also teaches them a valuable lesson in humility and love while helping them understand the power of Jesus' love and the importance of his sacrifice. Illustrations from the award-winning animated Liguori video are featured as black and white line drawings that children can color. Booklet
My 2nd grade teacher read this to my class 20 years ago…and it’s just as terrifying and messed up as I remember it. Before anyone comes at me, I think the basic premise is fine. Teaching kids about vanity and pride with anthropomorphic trees is a pretty solid way to get your message across. But then it takes a hard left into what-the-hell when you realize this is about the tree that becomes the cross that Jesus dies on. Who on earth thought that was a good idea? Aside from the tone deaf humor that’s sprinkled throughout, the message in itself is a little odd. Only in death can you atone for your sins? The absolute worst needs to happen in order for you to realize how wrong you were? That’s kind of heavy for a children’s story. I’m definitely in the minority for this one, but…wow. Definitely not my thing.
I love this story. I tell it each year on Ash Wednesday to start my students Lent journey. That it doesn’t matter who you are or aren’t, each person has a destiny. You just have to wait for your time to find out what it is.
I love this little book, it makes me cry every time. The illustrations are simple but the story is so moving, it helps adults and children, especially around Easter time.
This has become a family favorite read on Good Friday each year. Moves my husband and me to tears every time. Add this to your Lenten/Easter book basket!
