The stories in Girl, World are emotionally powerful and skillfully crafted, particularly the story titled "Room 308," an unflinching look at both the horror of war and the horror of sexual abuse within the US military. I highly recommend this collection, which also impressed my creative writing students. Poppe is a writer to look out for--we hope her next books will appear with major publishers!

I first became aware of Alex Poppe’s searingly honest, painful, and yet, wryly humorous voice when I was reading fiction submissions for our fifth issue, Sanctum. “Refugees Got Talent,” a short story that follows Trahzia, a teenage girl residing in the Arbat

Poppe’s stories range from the disconcerting to the tragic, the familiar to the strange, yet somehow she manages to deliver narratives that are wholly fascinating. Most of the collection asks readers to consider and immerse themselves in the lives of women who have been systematically oppressed, battered, and used by the world around them—women whose strength still manages to rise out of their situations. By putting her protagonists in situations outside of commonly publicized expectation, Poppe ...more

What I’ve come to love about Poppe’s writing is that it rarely feels like I’m reading a book, rather, it feels like I’m having a conversation. Even if I say nothing within it, it still feels like a collaborative effort between myself and whatever character Poppe is throwing my way. In this collection, there are many, and you will hurt for them, and hope for them, and you will be sad when the story ends where it does - though not because it was a poorly-placed ending, rather because Poppe is so e ...more

Girl, World is a thought provoking book in which the author takes an unflinching look at challenges women face in the world. The author takes us through different cultures and lands and holds a mirror up to the society in which we live. The short stories therein force one to come face to face with realities many women live in around the world, which as a society we'd rather not look at. It is a gripping read to which I highly recommend. The author's beautiful portrayal of the characters and the ...more

An amazing collection of short stories told from the viewpoint of intriguing and heroic characters, with vivid imagery. The author has a magical ability to put you inside another person's reality and the landscapes where they live. Sometimes I forgot I was reading and felt as though I was living or witnessing those experiences, sometimes heart wrenching and horrific, but always authentic.

Alex Poppe's short story collection weaves together the voices of women that are cutting, insightful and thrumming with inner life. Each live-wire character bounds across the pages, leaving you breathless with disbelieving wonder at where you end up next.
