This is an incredible book on the History of Houston from a consistently overlooked black population. It's evident how important their contributions to the city are, and yet, this book shows how time and time again the black community has been neglected and abused. Written in the early 80s, it is wild how pertinent Bullard's message is still today. Highway expansions negatively impact minority neighborhoods most, more funds need to be directed to minority-majority schools, and the relationship between the police and black neighborhoods must be improved through community engagement and minority representation.
Detailed overview of the history of economic development for Houston’s Black population, focusing heavily on the mid 20th century. The book was published in 1987, so many of the challenges and trends identified have grown and changed in years since, however it is an insightful look at the factors and characters populating Houston’s history.
