The long-awaited new novel by Francine LaSala was worth the wait. Eloquently weaving the past together with a present unlikely romance, LaSala keeps the reader consumed by the vulnerability, luck and risks of love. This is a true New York love story where every encounter, every person, every place can change a life...or two.

This book had me whipping the pages to find out if the baggage carried by star-crossed lovers Hugh and Annie was going to crush them, or if each would figure out what and how to move forward.

Annie suffers from alcoholism brought on by an abusive marriage and a family legacy of weak men and Catholic guilt. Wow. Just wow. I've been waiting years for Francine LaSala to release another book and this one was worth the wait. It was beautiful. Hauntingly beautiful and dark, but also funny. It was full of twists and turns that I never predicted. This is not your typical love story, but it is romantic. Most of the book takes place between two characters in present day with some flashbacks, but there is another storyline playing out in the 1940s. I wondered how it would fit with the rest of the story, but ...more
