Turn off the phone, ignore the doorbell, put your feet up, and immerse yourself in Caroline Mitchell's latest offering 'Sleep Tight'. I doubt that YOU'LL sleep tight though after reading it!

A serial killer is snatching young women from the streets of East London. He poses and dresses their bodies to represent fairytale characters, but there's no fairytale ending for his victims, they're simply there to feed his fantasy. This is a particularly vicious and disturbed individual.

Detective Ruby Preston and her team are on the case, but she's a cop with a difference - her ex- lover Nathan is an East End criminal kingpin, and she still has feelings for him. In effect, she has a foot in both camps. Ruby becomes emotionally involved in this case and not just because she wants to bring this monster to justice, but also because someone is trying to put Nathan in the frame for these crimes.

Oh boy ! I just love Ruby Preston, she doesn't just break the rules, she smashes them to smithereens. She's tough but also has a really caring, down to earth side to her too. The storyline was gripping, and real scary, it was impossible to put down, and there were some great meaty characters.

This is a cracking story, it's grim, it's gritty, it's edge of the seat stuff, and I believe Caroline Mitchell is right up there with the best of them!

Fairy Tales turn into dark horror stories in this brilliant thriller. This is the second book in the Detective Ruby Preston Series. All your favorite fairy tales have come back to haunt you.

Young women are going missing and turning up dead as dark twisted corpse versions of our favorite fairy tale heroines. Who is behind their torture and deaths and how has Nathan become a suspect? Detective Preston is working the case and sometimes she plays by her own rules. Nathan s the reason why Ruby's boss is eyeing her suspiciously. He is only too aware of their attraction and does not like it.

I just loved this book and love Detective Ruby Prescott as well. Ruby's life is turned upside down both personally and professionally as she hunts down an evil sick killer. This story puts Ruby through the ringer as she has to go with her gut which leads her down the path she may not come back from.

The plot is exciting and horrifying and this series so far is very addicting. I read the first book and went into this book right away and devoured it. It is a dark gritty series and recommend it to serial killer lovers who love books like this. I find this series very similiar to Robert Bryndza. So go ahead and plunge into this series. If you want to see my review for the first book look here.

Love You To Death: ★★★★✩

Okay, Caroline Mitchell is officially killing it!

As I'm still a newbie to the crime/mystery genre, I worried going in that I might find a second investigation less compelling, or somewhat stale. I can safely say this book quickly laid those fears to rest!

Everything I enjoyed about Love You To Death seemed improved upon here in ways that far surpassed my expectations. And I was left reeling when I came to the final act of the story.

I really enjoyed seeing the characters get to grow and flourish a bit here. Where the first book did well establishing the characters in terms of personality, background and motivations, Mitchell goes above and beyond here to really flesh every character out. I feel like a lot of time ancillary characters have the tendency to fall by the wayside in terms of development and characterization when an author needs them to fit within a specific niche.

Mitchell takes painstaking care to develop every member of Ruby's investigative team. They each have their own secret pains and heartaches that moves them away from cookie-cutter sidekick characters and makes them feel like a real people. At this point, I feel connected to the members of her team and care for each of them in different ways. It makes for really compelling reading, especially in a series where no one is safe.

Ruby remains my favorite character, and she's quickly climbing the ranks as one of my favorite female heroines. She's smart, she's brave and she cares - perhaps too much. While she makes decisions that find super frustrating at times I get why she does it. Mitchell has established her perfectly as a force to reckoned with among leading ladies investigating crimes.

It also should be said that it's not just Ruby and the team that gets developed. Strangely enough, Mitchell even takes the time to give her victims and her killers backstories. It helps things pack a necessary emotional punch when you're dealing with a killer as twisted as the one in this novel.

I loved the deranged take on classic fairytale characters here. It was demented and probably not for the faint of heart in some places, but through it all it was truly memorable.

I really look forward to seeing where this series goes next!

4.5/5 stars!

SLEEP TIGHT is the second book in the Detective Ruby Preston series by Caroline Mitchell. After enjoying the first book, “Love You To Death”, I was anxious to read the next book. This is a great series with believable characters. This is a dark gripping serial killer thriller with a shocking twist.

A killer stalks the streets of East London. All over the area, murdered young women are discovered, their bodies posed into a sickening recreation of fairytale princesses. It was like stepping into a fairytale-Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid…but all the women were prostitutes who would not be missed.

Detective Ruby Preston has been assigned to the case to hunt down a serial killer…before he strikes again. But when body parts from the victims are found at the home of her lover, Nathan Crosby, Nathan contacts Ruby for her help, after a drug raid at his place. Ruby realizes that Nathan is being framed, and now becomes number one suspect! Nathan goes into hiding, while Ruby tries desperately to capture the serial killer.

It becomes increasingly difficult for Ruby to walk a fine line between her job in law enforcement and her ex-lover’s criminal background…a possible conflict of interest?

Ruby needed to connect the murders, to prove Nathan’s innocence. But what was the motivation behind the murders?

The reader catches glimpses of the serial killer, with some chapters being devoted to the killer. What reasons could he have for carrying out his deeds?

“Pets, like people, were disposable objects. There were too many of them in the world, and the loss of a few would make it a better place. Just because he didn’t care about his fellow human beings did not mean they were not a subject of great fascination-and in what other occupation would he be able to place his hands on real-life subjects.”

“Now he was an outcast . Money was no longer a necessity, and he was at least free to treat his betrayers with the contempt he felt.” He referred to his work as ART…he was creating Masterpieces!

Another great fast paced thriller with lots of twists and turns. Just like the last book, the ending is a surprise that you never would have guessed.

Many thanks to Caroline Mitchell, Bookouture and Netgalley for the digital copy of the book.

There’s a huge creep factor to this book. I kept getting goose bumps, that chill of something crawling on my skin reading this. Ruby’s latest case has women being killed and left posed as fairy tale princesses. And to make matters worse, whoever is doing this is trying to frame Nathan for the crime.

This is a great story; very fast paced, with a gripping plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat and a ending I didn’t see coming at all. It’s a quick read, I managed it in one day. Of course, I neglected everything else to get it finished.

I love Ruby. She’s strong, caring and complex. She just feels very real to me.

I'll be anxious to continue this series.

So, there I was, having completed a frenetic round of edits needing a good book to immerse myself in. As Caroline Mitchell’s latest book was taunting me from my kindle, it really was a no-brainer. If I was expecting a slow, gentle guiding hand into this compellingly creepy tale I was immediately corrected as the opening pace of the story grabbed me and sucked me right in. At the risk of repeating myself I have to say this is my favourite book by this author so far. In Love You to Death I liked the character of Ruby Preston but in her second outing I found myself positively loving her. She is a determined lady but conflicted due to her consistently captivating relationship with Nathan, a dangerous man to have in her life. I love the way that Ruby’s personal life is expertly woven into the storyline at hand so that it doesn’t draw away from the narrative but adds something rather sinister to the overall effect. I still don’t know how I feel about Nathan which intrigues me and will ensure that I keep reading each new episode of this brilliant series. The storyline appealed to me immediately as the incongruous premise of fairy tales against serial killers was a genius contrast that I could not resist. It is written at breathless pace and the pages disappeared far too quickly for me as I absolutely devoured this story. Get ready for some twists and shocks along the way, all of which I never saw coming and resulted in me reading much of the book with my mouth hanging open. Already hungry for my next Ruby fix.

A new Caroline Mitchell book is always cause for celebration for me and I’ve been impatiently awaiting the second book in her Ruby Preston series from the moment I finished the first book. As usual, Ruby is working to catch a killer and this time it may be her toughest case to date. A highly disturbed individual is killing prostitutes and recreating scenes from fairytales at the murder scenes; Snow White, The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty to name a few. These fairytales don’t have a happy ever after ending though, as he’s not modeling them after the Disney versions, but rather after their original tellings, complete with abhorrent violence. As if all of that isn’t enough, Ruby’s sometime boyfriend, Nathan is the number one suspect when extremely incriminating evidence is found at his house.

I’ve been dying to delve deeper into Ruby and Nathan’s relationship and this book provided that opportunity in spades. Even though the evidence against Nathan is stacking up at a rapid pace, Ruby just doesn’t believe it. She knows this man inside and out and truly believes he’s being framed, all she has to do is prove it. That’s easier said than done, especially when other members of her team seem to also have personal connections to the case, which complicates things at an alarming rate. The addition of the teams private lives being connected to this case allowed me to really find out more about them making my connection to these characters deep. The upheaval in the teams personal life was game changing and dramatically increased the pressure on Ruby as well as amped up the intensity of the plot.

Mitchell has the unique ability to highlight the pressures and strain police officers face bringing such a sincerity to the characters. Ruby nearly buckles under the pressure, and who could blame her? She’s a female working in a highly dominated male field and now her boyfriend is the number one suspect? Most of her coworkers don’t even know about her relationship with Nathan as he’s generally on the other side of the law and keeping this quiet is not only a huge risk but an additional stressor she does not need.

The killer is revealed very early on, but the game of cat and mouse he plays with the police is exciting and intense. Mitchell always has plenty of tricks up her sleeve and even though you know who the bad guy is, you don’t know why or how. This killer is creepy and sadistic and since he doesn’t stick to just one method of killing, you never know exactly what to expect. The things he did to his poor victims was enough to send a cold chill up and down my spine and I was flying through the pages at a frantic pace. This was another solid book in the series and I’m in awe of Mitchell’s dark and twisted mind and ability to create such creepy killers and chilling murder scenes. Another winner from Mitchell, the killer in this book will blow your mind with his insanely depraved methods and dark, twisted motivations. I already have a huge aversion to rats and I dare anyone who reads this not to develop one by the time they’re done. Shivers. The fantasies he’s recreating will turn you off from classic fairytales forever, trust me.

So this is the second in the Ruby Preston series. While I somewhat enjoyed the first in the series I did find the serial killer in the story very one dimensional and uninteresting and the story didn't really do it for me. Ruby was an interesting character though and I had high hopes for a better follow up and I wasn't disappointed with Sleep Tight.

Young women are being murdered and their bodies being staged in public as fairy tale characters. Ruby and her team are on the case but as they investigate, the case takes a turn for the worse for Ruby as evidence is found in her former lover and childhood friend Nathan's house. Part of a renowned crime family who also appeared in the first novel, Ruby faces a race against time to find out who the killer is as Nathan goes into hiding as he is the number one suspect.

I really enjoyed this second outing for Ruby. A woman who skates on both sides of the law, Ruby was always an interesting and likeable well rounded central character from the first book. In Sleep Tight I think she has a story and investigation to go with the strength of her as a character.
The story ends up being quite complex without being difficult to follow. We have a large cast of characters to keep track of, from Ruby's team to Nathan and his cronies and the women and their siblings who are the victim of the serial killer.
Speaking of serial killers, we have a cracker of one here. While he is clearly bonkers, unlike in the first novel he is very well written and a believable character. He gets up to some pretty nasty stuff as characters go. It would so easy for him to have been a near cartoon character baddie and it all become a little one dimensional and silly, but it never ventures into that territory as he remains totally believable and interesting to read.

The story is a good one. Well paced, well played out and keeping you guessing right until the end, it's a really enjoyable read. I was delighted I enjoyed it so much when I was finished. Although I only gave the first in the series three stars and had given it some criticism, I had enjoyed Ruby and her team as characters and was always going to read the follow up to see what they got up to. The result was totally satisfying and didn't disappoint. I look forward now to Ruby's next outing with great anticipation. Sleep Tight was a cracker of a read and one that has now really put Ruby Preston on the map of great modern female detective characters.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and Caroline Mitchell for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ruby Preston is in charge along with DI Downes to investigate the disappearance and murder of two girls.
At first this looks like an open and shut arrest, Tom Mcally has just been released from jail and seems to be back to his old ways.

But when another victim is found, laid out as a Disney character of Snow White
 photo damon-anyone-ever-tell-you-thats-creepy_zpsuczdbeon.gif

Ruby realises she may just have arrested the wrong man.
Nathan Crosby somehow seems to be involved when a strange package is left in his home. Ruby knows that he is no stranger to crime but could he be responsible for this murder?
It's a race against time to find out who the killer is.

Caroline Mitchell is one of my favourite writers. Her stories always keep me on the edge. This is the second in the Ruby Preston series and it is really starting to take off now.
The chemistry between her and Nathan is off the charts, you can feel it.
She is torn, the love of her job or the love of Nathan.
 photo tumblr_lpoma1dKCA1qcua25_zps0cebf6b4.gif

The Crosbys are not a family to mess with and Lenny is creepy and unpredictable. Nathan's mother has a smile that never really reaches her eyes.
 photo BZ3VfZC4SwIms_zpsrewvubux.gif

Ruby makes sure that she doesn't manipulate her daughter either.

But most of all she won't let Nathan down. Somehow she must find the killer quickly and clear Nathan, or is there more to Nathan's past that he needs to disclose?

She has written fantastic characters, Ruby on the borderline on whether to cross over to the other side. Nathan still in the middle of his family's business.
But together they are like any normal couple that so want to be together but their conflicting interests put them in a difficult and dangerous situation.

Lenny......Nathans brother..... Is Cunning with a capital C. I think has a thing for Ruby but she won't let his intimidation get the better of her.

DI Downes lonely in the home he shared with his wife tries to protect Ruby but Ruby knows what she is doing and whilst Downes wants to bring the Crosby family in, she wants to protect Nathan more

All fantastic characters, bring this story to a heart stopping climax.

This is my type of book it has everything I look for in a crime / thriller. I loved the twist at the end, didn't see that one coming.

I really really liked this book. I loved DS Ruby Preston, I loved Nathan Crosby. Then why the four stars, you are asking me? Amnesia. It is like we are supposed to totally ignore so much that happened in the really good first Ruby Preston book, Love You to Death. Affairs, compromised detectives, and a few other situations that haven't migrated to the second book and should have.

Oh and a daughter, of whom Ruby is remarkably passive in not being able to have much contact with her. Why she has not bitch-slapped Frances and throat punched Lenny I will never understand. In a alternate universe France would have been her MIL and Lenny her BIL. Huh, maybe this is the better universe, although how can she ever be with the love of her life? Oh, I'm sorry, am I sounding too invested in fictional characters? Kudos to Ms Mitchell for bringing me to that point.

A serial killer in London who kidnaps them then after killing them displays them a la Grimm Fairy tales. Really Grimm fairy tales. Body parts are found under Nathan Crosby's bed. You can be sure as shootin' Nathan is not going to submit himself to any sort of arrest, so he goes on the run.
By dint of threats and love Ruby goes on the hunt for the real killer. Through an odd set of circumstances Ruby does this with official permission as she is designated liaison with the Crosby family. Class, please refer back to earlier comments on bitch-slapping and throat punching.

Sleep Tight is a page turner. I finished it at 3 a.m. No easy answers, I never figured out the puppeteer until Ruby revealed the answers. Not expecting a long life for that character, although Nathan promised different. I'm sorry, did I forget to mention that Nathan is co-head of one of London's biggest criminal organizations?

Mitchell paints a grim and gritty picture of the Shoreditch area of London and continues with her compelling portrayal of the sex trade.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a free electronic ARC of this novel, in exchange for an honest review.
Detective Ruby Preston is seeking a serial killer- one who turns his victims into gruesome figures out of fairy tales. However, when clues begin to show that her lover, nefarious crime heir Nathan Crosby, may be involved, Ruby has to risk it all to find the perpetrator and bring him to justice, at whatever cost.
“Sleep Tight” is the second novel in the Ruby Preston series, by Caroline Mitchell. I did not read the first novel, but I was easily able to follow along and keep up with the characters and plot. It is not necessary to read the preceding novel to get a grasp on this one.
I found this novel to be very typical of a British crime novel- to those of you familiar with Robert Bryndza, you will find many similarities. This novel is told from the perspective of a powerful female police detective, someone who lives for the job and has a very guarded personal life, with few intimate relationships that aren’t based on drunken nights or bad decisions. Also similar to Bryndza, in this novel we hear from the perpetrator- a disfigured man with a grudge. There is also a twist at the end (which I won’t give away), that also seems to jump from the pages of other British crime writers.
That being said, I enjoyed Mitchell’s crime novels more than the rest. Her story is easy to read for a North American reader- the plot has good flow and the dialogue does not have as many British slangs as her counterparts. This novel could take place in any city across the world, attracting a wide audience of readers. I enjoyed the interesting aspect of the murderer using characters from fairy tales (Grimm’s fairy tales of course) in his crimes, and the time taken to develop the back story of the murderer.
Being new to Ruby and this crime series, I really enjoyed how Mitchell was able to develop the relationship between Nathan and Ruby. The two seemed very natural together, and I was able to quickly form a bond with the couple. Even though I did not follow them from the beginnings of their romantic entanglements, Mitchell was easily able to fill in the blanks.
Overall, the novel was easy to read and the fairy tale aspect made for an interesting story. The novel plays out like a lot of other British crime novels I have read as of late, so expect repetition and predictability. I liked Ruby and Nathan, and the entire police team, and the ending provides a satisfying conclusion for all the characters. This novel is definitely for those who enjoy a gory British crime novel, however it is so similar to other crime novels that it likely won’t stand out among the rest. Worth a read for fans of Angela Parsons or Robert Bryndza, Caroline Mitchell won’t disappoint.

1-2-3 and breathe…… OMG Caroline Mitchell’s writing never fails to amaze me. Sleep Tight is the second book in this not to be missed series featuring Detective Ruby Preston. It’s going to sound cliched but it really is the authors best book yet, I kid you not! It’s twisted, menacing and damn right creepy, with an antagonist who makes most fictional serial killers look like choir boys in comparison. When the serial killer is someone who admires Jack the Ripper’s work, and poses his victims as fairytale princesses you just know you are in for a hell of a ride and the author does not disappoint, no sirree she takes the reader on a dark and twisted ride and I loved every minute of it.

Detective Ruby Preston is back and I must admit I’m becoming very fond of her, she’s feisty, funny, and she’s complex, there’s the law abiding Detective who seeks out justice and then there’s Ruby whose involvement with crime lord Nathan forces her to take unnecessary risks and ignore procedures to protect him. Ruby’s relationship with Nathan doesn’t bode well for future books in the series as I’m sure she’s going to find her career in jeopardy, as her work and private life appear to be heading for a spectacular collision.

Sleep Tight feels darker than the first book in the series Love You To Death I think this is due the nature of the crimes, a serial killer whose victims faces are transformed into perverse fairytale heroines, it doesn’t make for a happy read, but it certainly makes for a spine chilling one. Caroline Mitchell manages to turn the fairytale stories I remember reading into something gruesome and terrifying.

The reasoning behind the killings are multi-layered and complex and just as I thought I had it all worked out Caroline Mitchell threw in some very devious twists. The author takes a bold step in my opinion and reveals the Killers identity fairly early on in the book now I’m not sure about you but that can sometimes spoil a read for me, but did it hell! in fact knowing who the killer was added layer upon layer of tension and suspense.

Sleep Tight is a compelling read and one that begs to be read in one sitting, at times I find my heart pounding as the body count mounted, Caroline Mitchell builds on the suspense until the very last chapter. As Sleep Tight reached it’s dramatic and heart stopping conclusion I found myself completely wrapped up in the story, so much so I find myself holding my breath in anticipation of what was still to come.

As I’ve said before I’m a huge fan of this authors descriptive style of writing, especially around the crime scenes you feel your right there alongside Ruby, conjuring up images that stayed with me as I read. Sleep Tight has all the ingredients I love in a crime thriller and more thrilling plot, fabulous characters and a serial killer who chills you to the bone. A word of warning once you’ve read Sleep Tight those old familiar fairytales will never seem the same again. It’s going to sound cliched but I can wholeheartedly recommend this book for someone looking for an original crime story but with all the hallmarks of a truly thrilling tale. Personally I can’t wait for the next book in this highly gripping series, so Caroline Mitchell if you happen to read this, is there any chance you could write any faster?

I don't know. I just found some of the storyline a bit implausible in this one. I really liked the first book in the series but this one did not live up to my expectations. Even Ruby came across as a bit juvenile at times - she is 38, I think.

I found her relationship with Nathan a bit immature. Granted they had a "relationship" when they were teenagers. Then she joined the Police Force but there has been a connection over the years. She did, in my opinion, some foolhardy things on her own, without the backup of her team. Why would she jeopardize her job like that?

I just wonder did the author rush the book ... I see book 1 released in March and this one in April. I felt it didn't have the depth of the first book. I found her portrayal of Downes, the Irishman good.

Maybe I am nitpicking or maybe my expectations were too high. Not sure when the next book in the series is out. Will I read it? I probably will.

I really wish I could have liked it more.

Young women are turning up dead and posed as fairytale characters in this second installment of Detective Ruby Preston series. Ruby Preston and her team or on the case but this time the stakes are high as the killer is framing her boyfriend Nathan Crosby for the crimes. Will Ruby be able to keep her professional and personal life separate before all this blows up in her face?

A dark, gritty series this book is a great follow up and has enough twists and turns in the plot to keep you guessing till the end. A fast paced thriller that I devoured in one day

Good golly, Miss Molly. If you thought Lucy was Grimm, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Oh how and where to begin with this book. I absolutely loved Love You To Death and after starting a series so brilliantly, with such a memorable and formidable foe as Lucy was, you have to wonder whether or not it is possible to match that in the books that follow. The answer in this case is a resounding yes. Oh yes, yes, yes.

Driven to kill for initially undisclosed reasons, the murderer in this novel has very deliberate tastes, at least in how he wishes to present his victims. Each victim is laid out in their own personal tableau, a recreation of the original Grimm Fairy tales, far more macabre and chilling than the beautiful princesses you used to read about in the Ladybird books of your youth. There is no Disney magic at play here, this is more a Nightmare on Nile Street. (Hey – cut me some slack – it was the most similar sounding road I could find close to Shoreditch Police station).

For some reason the killer, known to at least two of his victims as ‘The Doctor’, seems to want to lay the responsibility for his crimes at Nathan’s door, making the murder investigation more than a little personal for our heroine, DS Ruby Preston. And as her daughter is not dissimilar in age to the victims, all of whom have links back to the Crosbys’ less than honourable activities, she has reason to be fearful for her safety. Not only that but as her boss knows of her links to the Crosbys, Ruby is under pressure to get Nathan to hand himself in, leaving her caught between the will of the force and the wrath of Nathan’s thug of a brother, Lenny.

The tension throughout the book is palpable. There is diversion galore, especially as a victim is found who seems to have no connection to the case Ruby is working on, and yet she is certain the links are there if only she can find them. And while the violence meted on the women is not described in any graphic detail, there is enough depicted, enough hinted at, to create a clear picture of what has occurred, and that makes for a stomach churning feeling for sure. Lucy… well she was a pure pussy cat in comparison.

The motivations of the killer are so well hidden in this book that the ending really took me by surprise. It wasn’t what I had been expecting at all. And while the victims were predominantly prostitutes, people who put themselves naturally in harms way by their choice of career, Caroline Mitchell managed to make them sympathetic enough, make their back stories harrowing without overplaying the poor me angle, that you couldn’t help but feel for them.

I really like the character of Ruby. She is, at heart, a true Blue Blood – a copper through and through. There is nothing she would not do for the job and her determination to solve the murders is unwavering. And yet she is torn by her loyalty to the Crosbys, in particular Nathan, the boy who stole her heart all those years ago. She is a straight talker, obsessed with bright red lipstick, has a clear understanding of the need for humour that only a long serving officer could have, has an overwhelming empathy for the victims and potential victims and she is truly respected by her team. She is perhaps a little battle weary, particularly given that she finds herself in the thick of all of the tension surrounding the chance to finally nail Nathan, and yet she is strong and (mostly) focused. She may not always follow procedure to the strictest letter of the law but she is ultimately incredibly likeable and a brilliant character to lead this series.

And as for Nathan and Ruby. The relationship that shouldn’t happen, that shouldn’t work. Well the chemistry between them is as strong as it has ever been, and as Ruby gives into temptation, you know that she is about to embark on something that could change her future forever. Nathan is as stoic and poised as ever, even under the intense pressure of being a murder suspect, but in spite of all of the people around him who could potentially be working against him, the one person he never lacks faith in is Ruby. This is something which is returned ten-fold, with her never wavering in her certainty that Nathan is innocent.

With shocks in store from within the force and betrayal happening all around the Crosby organisation, you will have no end of suspects. While we know from half way through exactly who the killer is, it does not alter the pace of the story, in fact if anything it speeds things up even more as it becomes a race to find the mysterious Doctor and to secure the evidence required to prove Nathan’s innocence, before he has a chance to claim another victim.

If you like your books with a cluster of murders that rest just a touch on the dark and unusual side, enjoy strong, well written characters with an undeniable chemistry, and like tales which twist and turn with unrelenting heart-thumping pace and tension, then you definitely want to read this book. I loved it, was hooked from first page to last and didn’t want to put it down. I was gutted when it was over, I was enjoying it that much, and I cannot wait to see what Caroline Mitchell has in store for old Ruby next.

A totally grim, grizzly and twisted 5 stars from me

This is the 2nd book in the 'Detective Ruby Preston' series by author Caroline Mitchell and it looks like she has another successful series on her hands following up from DC Knight. I had already read the first book in this series so I knew what to expect and my hopes were high for another great novel. Yet again Caroline Mitchell produces another piece of work of the highest quality and it is a certain success.
In this second novel a killer stalks the streets of East London. All over the area, murdered young women are discovered, their bodies posed into a sickening recreation of fairytale princesses. Detective Ruby Preston is leading the case to hunt down a disturbed individual who is using the women to realise his dark fantasies. But the case takes an unexpected turn when body parts are found at the home of her lover, Nathan Crosby and Ruby is torn between her job and her heart. She is convinced he is being framed and works round the clock to catch the killer and prove her lovers innocence.

This is a well paced story with some excellent characters and it is guaranteed to keep readers frantically flipping through the pages to find out more.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Ruby is back in the second book in the Detective Ruby Preston series. As Ruby and Nathan have background together I would recommend reading the first in the series before reading this one..

What a great story line! I mean being a big fan of crime novels now as well as fairytales when I was growing up, this was just a brilliant story line to read. Obviously not so great for the poor victims but you get what I mean.

The fact that Ruby needs to solve the crime in quick time otherwise Nathan faces a life time behind bars. Thats if they catch him first. This is one couple that you really route for. Everything is against them ever getting their happily ever after but it doesn’t stop them from trying.

The killer is an extremely sick and twisted one and what he does to the women’s bodies certainly is not for the faint hearted among us. Boy does it make for a great read though. It’s one of those things where you don’t want to read parts as I didn’t want to know what horrors the women had to endure but on the other hand I couldn’t drag my eyes away and had to keep reading. It certainly sent my heart racing.

Sleep Tight is a brilliant follow up to an already great start to a truly gripping crime series. The whole story just flows so well and I didn’t want to put it down even for a minute as I wanted to know how it was all going to end. Bravo Caroline Mitchell on another fantastic read, only problem now is how long do we have to wait for the next one?

My thanks to Noelle at Bookouture for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

I was surprised to learn this book was a respectable 350 pages, because I burned right through it like it was 200. It was really hard to put down. I LOVE the idea of a fairy tale killer. As many of us know, the Disney stories we all know are based on much darker and more violent tales. If you're not familiar with the originals, you'll get a little taste of them in this book.

Detective Ruby Preston is back, and she's as much of a troublemaker as ever. You'd think being a rule-breaker wouldn't lead to a job in the police force, but here we are. She's called to a crime scene when a young university student is found dead and exposed in a park. Ruby and her team barely have time to work on the case before another body is found not far from the first: a prostitute dressed and altered to look like a very familiar fairy tale princess. The two women could not have been more different, and the manner of death seems different as well... but Ruby can't shake the feeling that they're connected.

When crucial evidence is found at the home of Nathan, Ruby's lover, he goes underground. He's a major player in the criminal world, and very few know about their on and off again relationship and the adult daughter they share together. With pressure from Nathan and much more threatening pressure from his less charming brother, Ruby doesn't have much time to find the killer and clear Nathan's name... of this crime, anyway.

A very interesting killer and a brash but strong lead character make a great thriller. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series, whenever it becomes available!

Just as with the first book, I'm just not buying the relationship between Ruby and Nathan. It does add some heat and excitement, but you'd think she would have chosen between him and her profession long ago. And in my opinion... she needs to go with her profession!

I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Bookouture, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.

Having read and loved the first book in this series, Love You To Death, I was more than a little excited to be able to read a super secret early copy of Sleep Tight. I love nothing more than a good series, and I’m always afraid with the follow ups that they won’t live up to their predecessor, but hey, it’s Caroline Mitchell, it was always going to be brilliant!

We’re back with Ruby Preston and her team in Sleep Tight. Upon the discovery of a young woman’s body in a cemetery, the team are thrown into the twisted mind of a killer who will stop at nothing to stage his scenes. Recreating fairytale princesses, the killer mutilates his victims to look like specific characters from the old fairy stories, and leaves their bodies in plain sight to be discovered.

What follows is a thrilling and fast paced story, with an excellent ensemble cast of characters from the previous book, along with my favourite, Nathan Crosby. Crosby is Ruby’s lover (hate that word), and the killer has implicated him in the murder of one of his victims. Upon discovery of incriminating evidence in his home, Crosby becomes the prime suspect. Ruby is convinced he’s not the killer, and she goes rogue to try and prove her theory.

The killer in this book is as twisted as the plot, which will definitely keep the reader on their toes. There are so many different threads and leads to follow, but the author does a great job of keeping it accessible for the reader. I’m not going to go any further into the plot, sufficed to say I wasn’t expecting Sleep Tight to sneak up and grab me, but that’s exactly what it did!

An excellent second installment in a series that could run and run. Sleep Tight is a brilliant, tense and gripping read. I blasted through the pages towards the end, I could not put it down.

Highly recommended!

Brilliant writing, another winner from this brilliant author. The second in the D S Ruby Preston series and although this book could be read as a stand alone I recommend that you read them in order to get the full background. Ruby is the type of copper who thinks the rule book should be used to prop up a wonky table leg and fortunately her D I Jack Downes let's her get on with her job because he knows she will get results. Three young women are found murdered, two of the bodies are found in a macabre way, depicting characters from fairy stories. Ruby is determined to find the killer especially when her lover Nathan is implicated in two of the murders. I can't praise this book enough, I absolutely loved it

Oh my goodness, I loved this book!!  I have read every book now that Caroline Mitchell has released and I have loved them all, so I was really excited when I got an opportunity to read and review and advanced review copy of her latest book... and boy did she smash it!  I couldn't put it down!!

The story is dark, twisted and full of detail. I loved Ruby's character from the first book and in this one she has developed even more, you can read this one as a stand alone, but I'd recommend reading the first in the series if you can.  I loved the story concept and its done really well, I put down the book I was ready when this one arrived on my Kindle and was so glad that I did, its a wicked storyline in so many ways and I would love to know where the inspiration came from for this book as it's definitely one of the best I've read lately in the crime genre- 5 stars no hesitation.

I guess the question is, did the second book in the series live up to my incredibly high, almost unachievable expectations? I’ve been waiting with bated breath for my next fix of DS Ruby Preston so when I say the pressure was high, it was REALLY high! And once again, Caroline Mitchell has knocked it out of the park. It was SO good to be back on the case with Ruby and Co.

Ruby is as strong-willed and kick-ass as she was in the first book. Her relationship with local crime boss, Nathan is as fully charged as ever but this time Ruby has to clear Nathan’s name as part of an investigation into a serial killer dressing his victims as macabre fairytale princesses. It’s hard to deny you had something to do with the murders when a box of recently harvested organs is discovered beneath your bed, as Nathan quickly discovers. Ruby however is convinced of Nathan’s innocence. Her senior officers are convinced of Nathan’s guilt, so it’s down to our fearless hero to find the real killer and clear her man’s name. The chemistry between Ruby and Nathan is something which makes this series of books extra special in my opinion. As I may have mentioned before, I’m not one for slushy stuff in my crime novels but it’s such a big part of these characters stories that it just works. There was less friction between the couple this time around but that was partly to do with Nathan being in hiding for the majority of the book.

Lenny, Nathan’s rather creepy brother, is back with a bang this time around as well. I mentioned friction a moment ago and that’s what Lenny brings to the story. But definitely NOT in the same way as Nathan. His antagonistic personality, his needling, inappropriate behaviour towards Ruby makes my skin crawl. He’s so repulsive but it just wouldn’t be the same without him.

We find out fairly early on who the killer is but what we don’t know is, who is pulling their strings. The killer’s back story is quite shocking and it immediately clarifies why certain things are happening and the reason they’re happening to the people they are. For me, it just made me fall a little more in love with one of the main characters but I refuse to say which one. There are plenty more twists and surprises in store, including one that left me gasping like a fish out of water. Thinking about it now, I still can’t quite believe it happened!

Would I recommend this book? Of course I would (you’d be a fool not too!) but start with Love You to Death as it sets the scene and it’s bloody fabulous! A tense, edge of your seat read which I devoured. I didn’t want it to end! Oh, and I have such a girl crush on Ruby Preston…but don’t tell anyone. Please Caroline Mitchell, keep writing about Ruby. I’m totally hooked!

Five out of five stars.

I chose to read and review an eARC of Sleep Tight. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

One thing I have to say about Caroline Mitchell is she knows how to write a cracking prologue. Just like Love you to Death, Sleep Tight kicks off with a very chilling start to set the scene! And the story does not get to thaw out as Ruby’s investigative skills are truly tested in this twisted tale.

Once again, Ruby’s life is turned upside down both personally and professionally as she hunts an evil, sick killer – her colleagues are gunning for her childhood sweetheart Nathan. Ruby’s actions are under scrutiny and her loyalties are tested and questioned. Could this be the case that could destroy her?!

Personally I don’t have a fear of doctors (I know some do) and to me, The Doctor is a time travelling earth saving Gallifreyan (preferably one who wears Converse high tops and shouts Allons-y with Rose Tyler in tow, if you catch my drift). But The Doctor Caroline Mitchell has created couldn’t be further from that friendly image. He’s a scalpel wielding cold hearted killer out to terrorise the streets of London. He’s a sinister being not to be messed with. But Ruby Preston must step up to the plate and take him on. Will she catch him before the clock runs out and he completes his dastardly plan? You’ll have to read this chilling crime thriller to find out.

Needless to say, I loved this second instalment of the Ruby Preston series. I’ve read all of Caroline Mitchell’s fictional stories and I haven’t read one thing I didn’t like. I thought Love You To Death was chilling; Caroline Mitchell has exceeded herself with Sleep Tight. The use of the fairy tale re-enactments as the Grimm Brothers originally wrote them is very twisted – loved it! If you enjoyed reading Love You To Death, you are so in for a treat with this follow-up. Its so dark and twisted, it’ll grab you by the throat and not let you go until the fast paced tale is done!

A massive thank you to Bookouture for my advanced reader copy of this twisted crime thriller. When’s book 3 out?? #NoPressureCaroline

I’m such a fan of this new series by Caroline Mitchell and highly recommend you read the first one before you start Sleep Tight but don’t worry if can be read as a standalone novel as well! If you’ve read Carolines books before you will know that they have evolved to such a high standard now and she has certainly made her mark in the crime thriller genre recently. I loved the first Ruby Preston, Love you to Death, so couldn’t wait to catch up with her!

One of the main things that draws me to this series is that it is as much about Rubys personal life as the crime she is trying to solve and here things get very entwined indeed! Ruby is hot on the heels of a serial killer with the most sickening way of displaying his victims but when a nasty surprise is found under Nathan’s bed, the trail leads a little closer to home than she’d like! And when Nathan’s creepy brother Lenny comes worming his way in and Rubys superiors start to delve deeper into her connections with the Crosby family we know that there is going to be an explosive finale!

I love Ruby and, as I have always had a thing for bad boys, I still go weak at the knees for Nathan! And this was balanced nicely by the feelings of terror and disgust I had whilst reading about these gruesomer than gruesome murders. My emotions were definitely on a bit of a rollercoaster ride here and I HATE rollercoasters!! Weirdly enough this is the second book I’m reviewing this week set in Shoreditch -seems like a few nasties have followed the hipsters out there but the setting was certainly part of my enjoyment of the whole Ruby Preston experience.

If you love dark and disturbing, twisty turny plots and a policewoman who only just lives on the right side of the law then be prepared to meet your new girl crush right here! A fabulous series that promises to get even better. More please!

Just when I thought Caroline Mitchell writing couldn't get any better with Love You To Death which was my favourite book that I read last year. She totally nails it with Sleep Tight and pulls out all the punches. OMFG what a book and what a series!

The story starts off with one gritty prologue then we follow Detective Ruby Preston on one twisted roller coaster ride on the hunt for a warped minded killer who stalks the streets of London and leaving the victims dressed up as fairy tale princess. Put someone is trying to frame bad boy hottie Nathan with body parts planted under his bed. Ruby has totally got her work cut out trying to catch the killer before Nathan becomes the number one suspect. Leaving Ruby torn between her job and her lover.

Wow, Wow, Wow I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next in this nail biting story. I cannot tell you how much I love this series. Ruby is one kick ass detective who lives life on the edge and doesn't always do things by the book. For a start her lover Nathan isn't always on the right side of the law and Ruby knows it. Which makes this series unique.

Caroline's experience is shown throughout the whole of this story with the police procedure side of things. I actually felt like I was right there in the story. And like Love Me Death there is plenty of twisted and brutal murder scenes which totally turned my stomach and made me cringe.

Sleep Tight ticked all the boxes for me I cannot recommend it enough giving me a book hangover. Roll on the third book in the series.

If you're looking for a fast paced gritty story this is certainly the book for you. And without a doubt gets all the stars from me.

Sleep Tight is the 2nd book in the Detective Ruby Preston series. I highly recommend reading the first book before reading this one. Even though this book was still well written, it is lacking the character development that was in the first book. You are missing the relationship history between Ash and his wife with her mental illness; Ruby and DCI Downes' "friendship" and even Ruby and Nathan's history growing up together. Luckily I just finished reading Love You to Death before reading this book. Everything was still fresh in my head or else I would have forgotten all these details or even gotten confused with other female lead detectives series that I have been reading.

A serial killer is murdering people and dressing them up like a fairy tale character. But it's the grimmest version and not the sweet sugarplum version that you tell your kids. Evidence is found at Ruby's ex-lover's, Nathan Crosby, house and it is up to her to find the true killer and stop her fellow coworkers from arresting Nathan.

Another great fast paced thriller with lots of twists and turns. Just like the last book, the ending is a surprise that you never would have guessed.

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of Caroline Mitchell's "Sleep Tight" in exchange for a honest review.

Attracted by the great concept, I picked up this book and was immediately drawn in to the macabre and chilling prologue. From this point forward, the reader is taken on a rollercoaster of intrigue and nail biting tension that builds through twists and turns to a satisfying and shocking conclusion.
In Ruby, author Caroline Mitchell, has created a fascinating character who is full of contradictions, not least in combining her job as detective with an ever-changing relationship with gangster Nathan Crosby and his family.
The author skilfully builds the dark, disturbing narrative whilst expertly weaving in the subplots, resulting in a true page-turner that keeps the reader guessing. I particularly enjoyed – if that’s the right word – the chapters from the point of view of the doctor and his ‘works of art’ . . . not for the faint-hearted!
Sleep Tight is, of course, the second book in the DS Ruby Preston series but if you fancy picking up this one first, it makes a cracking standalone read.
Five stars from me . . . and highly recommended!

Wow! What an amazing book! What a remarkable story! Still recovering from it! I LOVED the first Ruby Preston book and this one is even better. So many twists and turns. So dark and thrilling and unputdownable. Love Ruby - she is so human and real. This author is absolutely amazing in that everything she writes is addictive and gets right under the skin. Love this series and love this author. I cannot wait for more from her!
