The Ex-wires decide to throw a party—a combination birthday and Christmas party. Rin buys some cheap reindeer ears for himself and a moustache and glasses costume for Yukio, who is less than impressed. Shiemi dresses as Santa Claus and carries a large bag containing a full-sized decorated Christmas tree (it’s actually Nee). When tragedy accidentally ensues, they salvage what they can, and save the day by having a hot-pot party. As they are partying, Shima receives a call from his older brother Juzo—he and Mamushi are going to have a baby! Although they are officially married, they are going to have a ceremony for family, and they want Shima and Bon and Konekomaru to attend!

After the party, Rin and Yukio learn, to their surprise, that Shura lives in their dorm too. Shura has had a bit to drink and mentions to them that she met their mother. Naturally, they want details, so Shura tells them the story, which occurred when she was a bratty little girl being raised by Father Fujimoto. Afterward, the brothers discuss what they found out. Yukio expresses a desire to know more about their mother, but Rin doesn’t, to his brother’s surprise.

The Ex-wires all travel to Kyoto for the wedding. Everyone pitches in to help with preparations, although with his arm in a sling, Yukio is limited in what he can do. Lots of family members show up from both sides. Rin is concerned about his brother. He feels as if something is wrong with him, but he doesn’t know what.

Even from Kyoto, Bon checks on Lightning, chastising him to get out of bed. As soon as he hangs up with Bon, Lightning places another call, asking about Dr. Dragulescu’s schedule. Shima is sitting alone, away from the festivities, when Konekomaru finds him. They have a talk, and Shima starts to feel better about himself.

The Ex-Wires and a few others head to the temple for New Year’s Eve, with a stern warning to stay together, but Rin finds himself standing next to Shiemi, separated from the others. He reveals to her his feelings that Yukio is hiding something from him. Before they can really talk, though, they are discovered and the moment passes.

New Year’s Day. Bon helps his father prepare for the wedding ceremony. He asks him about Father Fujimoto, but before Tatsuma can respond, he is called away. Afterward, Bon is seated next to Yukio, during the ceremony. Yukio overheard Bon’s question, and wants to know what Lightning is investigating. Even as they speak, Lightning is making his move, but Bon tells Yukio he can’t reveal any information regarding the investigation. The situation threatens to boil over when Yukio threatens Bon with a gun, but everything ends up being put on hold when the Ex-wires are recalled to handle a dangerous situation—a Cyclops is loose in Ikebukuro Station!

There is a lot going on in this volume of Blue Exorcist, aside from the wedding and New Year’s and the baby. Yukio is trying to figure things out, such as why Father Fujimoto raised him and Rin, what is their mother’s story, and what do Bon and Lightning have to do with anything? Rin is trying to understand why Shiemi has chosen not to take the exorcist’s exam, although she assures him it isn’t because she is dying or moving or anything, but she can’t tell him the reason. She just can’t. We see Lightning in action and get a better feel for what he does. I have to say I’m liking him more than I did before. Shima is a hard person to get a handle on. As a double spy, it’s hard to say which is his true face, and which side is he truly on. Yukio reveals a surprising memory, which is a tender moment. I like seeing more of Shura as a little girl, it’s really cute.
On pins and needles now, waiting for the next volume!

Such a heartbreaking volume! Yukio continues down his self destructive path until at last he attempts suicide and is stopped by Satan. I am very worried about where this disillusionment and self loathing will lead him. Shima was being slimy as usual and I was disappointed that he couldn't be more happy for his family. It was nice to see some joy in Juzo and Mamushi's wedding and pregnancy. I'm very excited to learn more about Yuri and how she came to give birth to Yukio and Rin.

I love the beginning with the Christmas/Birthday party and all of them being together and having a good time. I also loved them going back and celebrating New Years Eve and the wedding.

But, then? Woha. I'm really scared for Yukio. /o\

Also, what's up with Lighting?

The playoff between Yukio and both Shima and Bon is pretty good. The story is also committed to its interesting turn on Yukio but I wish it had been done slightly more believable in terms of emotional layering. I am not sure if it hit better when people read it monthly.

I don't give it full 5 stars because of the stuffed first chapters, but anyway, as always, it was great. I'm looking forward to continue the series and follow Yukio's behaviour and evolution.

Whaaaaa....just happened? I am confused.

Also...I'm sort of tired of this whole Yukio plot. I feel like I'm just not really all that invested anymore. I'm missing the old days of this series, before it all got so complicated. :/

Yukio's getting reckless. I just want him to confide in someone, but not everyone's personality is like that. Is he gonna be okay? That's what keeps me going to the next volume!

Well, I was definitely not expecting that ending. There has been so little of Yukio in the past couple volumes it would have been nice if he'd been on the page more. All we get of him is a few panels and him thinking about how him and Rin were born, as if we'd forget a couple chapters later. His actions feel a little forced for drama because of it.

I didn't find this volume as enjoyable as the last couple of volumes. It's probably because we got a bigger focus on the exorcists from the Kyoto branch whom I never really cared for all that much during the Impure King arc.

This volume starts off with everyone celebrating Christmas and their birthdays all together then everyone gets invited to Kyoto for a wedding. Major events happen here, however, when Yukio finally confronts Bon on what he really knows and what he's hiding. He goes as far as to point a gun to his head and threaten him.

Afterwards, all exorcists are called to fight off a cyclops who is wreaking havoc on the city with more than 30,000 people being able to see the demon. Its attacks also release other demons. All the while, Yukio continues to fight and never rest. As he is still a minor and reports were recieved that he was fighting recklessly he is sent home.

Prior to this though, Lightning confronted Yukio about threatening his apprentice, Bon, and he secretly gives him a flashdrive with all the information both of them have discovered over the Illuminati and the True Cross's role in creating this organization. In the end, Yukio is unsatisfied with what he has discovered and is left even more shaken about the fact that he thought with the True Cross he is fighting on the right side.

Not wanting to go home, Yukio finds himself at the exorcist shop of Shimei just like 2 years ago when he had run away not wanting to return home too. Yukio reveals to Shiemi that he feels all alone with no friends and no family. Afterall, he had asked Rin if he has no interest in learning about their birth and origins, but Rin could not care less and this, ofc, infuriated Yukio, but ultimatley he dropped the subject because it's Rin and, ofc, he thinks like that. Both of them may be twins, but they think differently as he said. Ofc, hearing how alone Yukio feels Shiemi tells him he's wrong. She's his friend and he has Rin who has been very worried about him, but Yukio in anger tackles her and tells he didn't ask Rin to worry. In shock at what he has done Yukio stumbles out of the shop.

Feeling completely tired and down, Yukio attempts to take his own life only to be prevented by Satan; Yukio's eyes flashing a demonic blue once again. Having been keeping watch of Yukio all this time, Shima comes out of the shadows and tells Yukio again he should have asked for advice and help.

The volume then ends with Shiemi running to where Rin and the others are and tell them something major has happened with Yukio.

And obviously, it looks like the next volume is going to hurt a lot as Yukio has finally fallen even further the deep end. Not that I can blame him. He is such a complex and deep character that doesn't deserve the hate he gets. His arc has gone on for so long and it is just a little tiring to see him in such pain and so desperate, but it's all obviously central to his story and necessary for future conflict and growth.

I guess, I dreadfully look forward to crying the next volume. Lol

Wow, the end of that volume screwed me up, big time. We've been getting big hints that something is definitely wrong with Yuki. Obviously he has powers derived from Satan that seem to have laid dormant until now from what we've seen. I do like heroes turned villains to antihero stories, but I love the brotherly dynamic between Yuki and Rin so much that seeing this happen really hurts. I'm especially curious about what the hell Yuki saw on that USB Lewin gave him. It has him wanting to alienate himself from everyone and completely question his worldview, so it must be bad. I can already see how much Rin is going to suffer after this. He loves his brother and he's the only family he has left, so it will be hard to lose him. I hope Yuki gets some kind of redemption arc at some point in the series. I trust Kazue Kato to develop the story well for Yuki. I've already seen in the past how these stories can go wrong. (I'm talking to you Sasuke Uchiha!) I trust Kato to do a better job, though. I'm looking forward to find out more next volume.

In holiday 🌲- they celebrate it & also Rin& yukio's birthday 🎂 Rin so cute wearing reindeer ears ♥️ plus Rin & yukio were now know shura lived in same building as them in 2nd floor even I don't know shura stay there which is new. In new year - juzo & mamushi are getting married together. Rin & his friends especially yukio were there in their wedding. Yukio in other hand threatened bon using his gun n telling him what he know about something that he's hiding something when they're alone even shima stopped yukio but yukio's phone in vibrate when yukio answered it, it was shura that she said turn on the TV about the cyclops at ikebukuro station. Rin try to understand shiemi about why she quit at exwires exam of all sudden but shiemi didn't say a word about it not even once which I 'm more curious about it. I give it 3.6 ⭐ n I'm still looking forward to the next volume 21.

Things are getting real. This volume starts off light hearted, but ends in rather dramatic fashion. Yukio is going full edge lord at this point. He is desperate to know the truth about his mother and his birth, and cannot understand why Rin has no interest at all. His desperation is making him do odd things, add on the fact that he seems to be flipping back and forth on the emotional spectrum rather quickly, and it’s clear all is not well. The end of this volume makes me very worried for our boy. It’s clear he is going to jump ship, but in what way? And how does Satan factor in to all of this?

Next volume please, because this story is heating up.

This one had a lot going on. It's mainly some personal growth sort of filler between major arcs. It celebrates Christmas at the school and then on to Shima and Bon's hometown area for weddings and family goodness.

But underlying all of this is the fact that demonic activity is increasing and the normal populace is beginning to see it. It won't be hidden much longer.

And then without spoiling anything, Yukio is in a spiral and it is going to have major impact. It's pretty tense stuff.

We have some nice fluff chapters with the characters celebrating Christmas, New Years, and a wedding with some plot stuff running in the background with Yukio wanting to know about Lightning's investigations and Lightning getting arrested. But this entire volume does have some really nice character growth with Yuko as he learns that his world is not so black and white anymore and we do see him start to spiral and it is a nice tragic bit of growth for him.
