Why would a scientist of Celto-Anglo-Germanic background in Toronto take an interest in a big 1.3 kg hardcover book, very handsomely designed, called “Secwépemc People, Land and Laws / Yerí7 re Stsqeys-kucw?”

The answer lies in my having grown up in two superimposed countries. On the one hand, I grew up in the western Canadian town of Kamloops, learned the two national anthems (we also sang ‘God Save the Queen’ in those days) and went to school to learn about the history of the explorers. On the
