Prince Lorn of Jior is what’s left of an evil empire. King Kullorn was the epitome of evil. Together they led demon hordes reaping death and destruction. Kullorn is killed, leaving Lorn alone to wallow in the desolation of defeat. Years later, Lorn is accused of following in his father’s footsteps and kidnapping Princess Lililaira. Risking capture, imprisonment and death Lorn attempts to learn who is using his name to start another war. During a rescue of the Princess, Lorn is badly wounded and they must fight to remain together as he is healed by her, body, heart and soul.
Wendy L. Anderson is a writer of passionately charged fantasy. Breaking the barriers of typical fantasy themes, she created the Kingdom of Jior epic fantasy series. A lusty and poetic five-book series that will have you wanting more in her Legends of Everclearing spinoff series. Inspired by authors such as Robert E. Howard and Morgan Llywelyn, Wendy went on to write three other stand-alone works; A Cut Twice as Deep, Ulrik, and Rapunzel's Tower. These fantasy works break free from the usual boundaries of fantasy genres. A Colorado native and mother of two; she has decided it is time to write down the fantasies from her mind. Writing about everything from fantastical worlds to the stuff of her dreams she takes her stories along interesting paths while portraying characters and worlds she sees in her mind's eye. Her goal is to deviate from common themes, write in original directions and transport her reader to the worlds of her creation.

Male perspective. The book is a quick read. I did not get into the story the way I was hoping, so unfortunate. But it wasn’t the worse book I have ever read. The age group I think would relate best is NA 16-21 ish.
This was a fantasy romance tale that was full of good ideas and a fun story but that never quite managed to work for me because I just could not connect with the writing.
The plot was fun. Prince Lor is the half-demon son of a notoriously evil tyrant king. Since his fathers defeat and death five years previously Lor has been languishing in his evil fortress. He loves battle but lacks his fathers desire for torture, conquest, and rule. His people and armies have fled leaving him with only his fathers old sorcerer companion for company. Things change for Lor when news reaches his advisor that strangers are raiding in the human lands using his name and his fathers livery. To make matters worse the the thieves who have stolen his name have also stolen a princess. That princess was due to marry a neighbouring king! The result is the human lands are united in outrage and ready to storm Prince Lor's castle and cut him and his army to pieces!
The story was fun. I'm sure I'd have loved it if I had connected better with the writing as this is definitely my type of fantasy/romance story. Lor, despite being a half-demon and a bit of a wastrel, was a pretty easy lead character to root for as he got caught up in the struggle to clear his name and survive the hoards of people out to kill him. Of course he started with the intent to rescue the princess he supposedly kidnapped and return her to her father but things just did not play out as easily as that as the pair proceeded to fall in love along the way!
I feel like it is a real shame this one did not work for me as it definitely had all the building blocks of my type of fantasy/romance story and I do feel like there was a fun story in here somewhere that passed me by as I just did not gel with the writing.
When the opportunity to review Of Demon Kind came up, I jumped at the opportunity. The blurb had me hooked, and it sounded like it would be right up my alley. My instincts were right! This is set in medieval times, with themes of war, love, loyalty and betrayal.
Wendy L. Anderson’s writing is everything. She creates her characters slowly, building their arcs and giving each an individual personality and back story. The characterization in this novel is strong, and what’s awesome, is that this is only the start of the series. I am sure there is so much more to know. I love when characters are deep, and Wendy L. Anderson has achieved that. They were realistic. It is always wonderful when realism is found in the mix of magic and witchcraft.
Twist after twist, the intensity of this novel builds until the clever resolution. The pacing is perfect. There is a ton of suspense, the descriptions are written beautifully, and the events that bring the conclusion of the story also set anticipation for the next in the series. Fantastic and highly recommended!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from R&R Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.*
Before I’ll go deeper into this review, I wanted to say a few things. It’s been almost a year since I’ve read a book. I was too occupied taking care of my mom, and at the end of the day, I was too exhausted to read anything. Why am I sharing this in a book review? Well, it’s because I wanted you to know where I was when I accepted this book and where I am right now. After finishing this book, it reunited me with books and fantasy again, after a very long time without books. Thank you Wendy for that ❤
From the blurb, you can already tell this book is worth reading and I am so happy I did. This book has adventure through a beautiful landscape, it has war, love, good vs. evil, and more things that will easily sweep you off.
In most Fantasy books and here as well, it takes a bit of time to enter deeper into the plot, and for me a bit into the story, I started to get swept away into the world and I was more invested in the characters. I will say that Romance is not really my favorite read but here the scenes were written well and beautifully and everything was very tasteful, and I enjoyed reading these parts as well.
The story follows a prince Lorn, who fell off his path and lost everything until he discovers all the hate and lies people are telling about him to start another war in his name, and he sets off to set things right again and he even finds love as well.
I loved the contrast of Good vs. Evil, it was nothing like other fantasy books here we get a wonderful viewpoint from the Evil perspective as well and I loved every moment reading it. It was a nice twist to feel sorrow for the “bad” side, and Wendy has done it masterfully here. The story is full of plot twists and new things that change how you feel and how you see the characters. It reminds me a lot of the Lord of The Rings landscape and the very harsh contrast of good vs. evil, I love it.
I love the characters so much and I am so invested in them, you can tell that Wendy spends time with them, because they feel so real and so detailed that I want to know more about them. The Princess is so different from what you think she is at the first time you see her, I love the arc behind her and behind the other characters.
For me, the world-building was done beautifully here, you can easily see the landscape of the beautiful Kingdom of Jior (I always have a hard time describing the landscape, lol), from the mountains to a cave, you can see it and you want to be there going with them through their hard but exciting adventures.
This book ends with a cliffhanger that surprised me very much and I can’t wait to go read the next book 😀 This book is part of a series so you will have a lot of books to binge on, and this book is the best start for the series. Luckily Wendy gifted me with the entire series so I can keep on reading without any wait 😀 And of course, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars, it is well deserved and a very easy 5 stars to give.
*** Thank you so much, Wendy L. Anderson, for providing me a copy of “Of Demon Kind” in exchange for an honest review.
This book was gifted to me for an honest review. It is the 3rd book by Wendy L. Anderson I have had the pleasure of reading, and yet again I am not left disappointed. Of Demon Kind is actually the first book written by Wendy L. Anderson and is the first book of a six book series, of which I am looking forward to devouring.
Of Demon Kind follows Prince Lorn of Jior, a Demon who is at first presented to us in his empty castle a few years after his evil father King Kullorn was defeated at war. His one remaining servant, Lan-loe, brings terrible news to his Prince; news of lies and rumours in which the Prince is being held accountable for destruction across the lands of Vedt and the kidnapping of Princess Lililaria, the beautiful daughter of King Koran of Skoria.
Prince Lorn ventures out to search for the perpetrator and to clear his name but ends up on a great adventure where he finds out who is causing the destruction, rescues Princess Lililaria, but becomes extremely wounded. From here the romance between Princess Lililaria and Prince Lorn evolves and this romance creates and builds other plots within the story which end in war between good and evil.
Prince Lorn is a really strong character who grew on me as I continued to read and then I absolutely fell in love with him. Princess Lililaria was a character who I adored straight from the off and I feel I would be friends with her in real life. I love how their relationship builds throughout the story. Throughout the novel, there are more characters introduced and some of these are very strong side characters. Sorrell, for example, is a character I would like to read more about. Possibly a novel of his own about his history or a series on his own adventures.
The novel concludes well with all questions answered and everything wrapped up nicely, and then, showing her own evil side (haha) she decides to throw a cliffhanger in to the mix. The cliffhanger opens the way nicely to the next book which I can not wait to get started on.
From this book I definitely got The Lord of The Rings vibes with the Battle of Helms Deep being at the forefront of my mind during the battle that concludes this novel. The world of Vedt that Anderson has created reminds me also of The Lord of The Rings type of landscapes with open valleys and dense woods, deep caves and large castles. I would love to know if somewhere in the real world gave the author inspiration for this beautiful world she has created as I would love to visit these places.
The romance in this book is enjoyable but I felt that there were slightly too many sex scenes though not enough to put me off continuing to read and I think it was important to show the bond between the two characters grow. I do think that the fantasy and romance genres go well together and the author really does have exceptional talent in writing ‘Romtasy’ (I’m not sure how I feel about that portmanteau…).
This book, along with the other two books I have read by Wendy L. Anderson, are genuinely some of the best work I have ever read and I look forward to reading more of her work hopefully for years to come.

Wendy L. Anderson tells a tale of a prince who has hit rock bottom and then soars as high as the tallest mountain.
Prince Lorn is a rotted out, the bottom of the barrel, hermit who wants nothing more than to drown his sorrows in a cask of wine until the end finally comes for him. Until he discovered that there are ravagers who are spreading lies about him and his kingdom. He sets out to set the record straight and finds the love of his life along the way.
This novel is a wonderful mix of romance and fantasy. I want nothing more than to have Prince Lorn wrap me up in his wings and fly me off to a cave far away from civilization. He is handsome, but he can be a bit of a jerk at times. Princess Lily, on the other hand, is the essence of contentment. Until she is forced to use her powers to save herself and Prince Lorn.
Wendy has written a tale that I want to be a part of. I want to be there with them and live in the world of Jior. The way Anderson describes the cave, the mountains, the woods, and the castle itself all make me want to jump in the story and add my own storyline.
Unfortunately, Wendy has done the one thing that I hate more than anything in my reading. She has left a giant cliffhanger. I hope this means that there will be more to Prince Lorn’s story, but at the same time, I hate to be left wanting! Of course, this is my own pet peeve, and the story is excellent, so don’t let my foibles dissuade you from reading.
I award Of Demon Kind a full 5 out of 5 stars. Any book that has the power to sweep me into the story deserves no less. I recommend Of Demon Kind to anyone who likes to mix a bit of fantasy in with their romance.
Many thanks to the author and Shannon from Reads and Reels for providing me a copy of Wendy L. Anderson’s, Of Demon Kind in exchange for an honest review.
Of Demon Kind is a high fantasy story complete with demons and magic, in a traditional medieval setting. The premise of the book was interesting, and it starts with an epic battle which is a good attention grabber. Unfortunately, after a very promising start, the rest of book was a lacklustre. There are a few interesting characters, but I felt that they were not explored in any great detail, and there is an abundance of cliché in the side characters. Event he big two, Lorn and Liliaira, are disappointingly one dimensional; hulking brute and dainty princess. The work Anderson creates is believable and they have done a good job of explaining it without resorting to exposition. The quality of the writing lets book down; sloppy grammar and overuse of certain words and phrases make the book seem badly edited. There is a plot, and a few side plots, but these don’t feel like they are centre stage and the story really struggled to move in my opinion. This was mostly due continuous and gratuitous sex which the book is littered with. It felt like I couldn’t get past more than 5 pages without Lorn and Lily being at it again, in graphic detail. I think if all of these scenes were removed, the book would probably be half the length. Which is another problem; just as the flow starts towards the close, the book ends. It felt very much like a forced ending with the express reason of creating a sequel, when actually very little of what plot had been opened was closed, and the cliff-hanger ending just feels forced. Overall, I have given this book 2.3 stars. I just didn’t enjoy it, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a market out there for it.
As with most Fantasy reads this book takes a little time setting up the story line and the characters but it definitely helps the reader as the story quickly moves along. This author has some nice wording and phrases that easily lend it to the feeling of the fantasy genre. That along with the dialogue makes the story flow along in an easy manner. A surprise in this book was the well done sexual scenes that I would have considered well done even in a romance novel. This book has a good presentation of good vs. evil and a thought provoking idea of what if evil is good? While the author is a novice, and there are a few minor disconnects, I think she is on to something with her characters and writing. I look forward to the next book in this series.
This book is a fantastic entry in the fantasy genre and a great star of a 5 book series.I would put it in YA fantasy. Even though i think it leans a bit more into YA then adult fantasy i enjoyed it so much, and that was a surprise to me, because i read more adult fantasy. This book has everything that will bring up your heartbeat! Adorable protagonists, great enemies and a nice romance in the story.I adored the charackters. The setting of the story was beautifull and the progression of the charackters well exicuted. I think that the story will even more emprove in the later books and that we must pay atention to a new star on the fantasy horizon,Wendy Anderson.
Normally I am a sci-fi reader, so I thought I'd try something different. Of Demon Kind is a fascinating story about a world where humans and fantastical beasts occupy the same world. The characters were intriguing, the story was well-paced, and the world that Miss Anderson created was all-consuming. In fact, I was quite pleased to learn that this is but the first book of a series (so now I can binge-read her next book!) So if you are a Tolkien fan, try this series. You will be sure to get your fix from Demon Kind.
What an amazing start to a series! This fantasy, adventure romance was hard to put down. I was hooked from the first page and the characters were so interesting. Prince Lorn is a demon who is on a quest to clear his name after brutes have falsely claimed they are pillaging land’s in his kingdom’s name. In an attempt to clear his name he hopes to rescue the princess that was kidnapped. Lorn and Lililaira’s characters are very easy to love and the way Wendy created their characters was brilliant.
This book has elements of war, betrayal, love, and loyalty. There were so many twists, turns, and a cliffhanger that has me wanting the second book asap!
I have never been so surprised to love a book! Anderson is a fabulous writer. From the prologue on I was hooked keeping a steady pace with my imagination on fire and excitedly turning pages to see what happened next. I normally never read Fantasy which made this that much more intriguing to me. The visualizations, the romance (another genre I do not usually read), the battles and leaving us with the question: "can bad produce good"? I highly recommend you read this book but one thing you need to know. Spoiler alert:Anderson does an amazing job with her sensual descriptions of love.
{My Thoughts} I fell in love with the new covers when they were released last month and I'm so glad that @rrbooktours had a review tour as well because I just found my next long series! 😍
We follow a deeply troubled and sad, demon prince, Lorn on his journey to clear his name after reports are brought to him that a band of brutes are pillaging the lands in The Kingdom of Jior's name. They even kidnapped princess Lily and pinned it on Prince Lorn.
Lorn decides his first step will be to find and rescue the princess and return her to her father. When he breaks into her rooms using his demon wings, he is stunned by her beauty. They go on the run from the black sorcerer and his army and end up trapped in a cave all winter, recovering from injuries.
Cue the ✨rescuer to lovers✨ music. Lorn and Lily are the cutest and seriously badass also. They go on a thrilling adventure where they meet enemies, potential friends, have their lives threatened, are captured, escape, and all in the hopes to return to The Kingdom of Jior, together, to take on future threats. Will they defeat their enemies and heal together, or will their love come crashing down? I can't wait to dive in to book 2 to find out because book one ends on a cliffhanger!!
I would like to start by thanking R&R Book tours @rrbooktours for providing me with a copy of Of Demon Kind by Wendy L. Anderson @wendyanderson7111 for reviewing!
This story was suspenseful, twisty, intense, fantastic and absolutely smart. It was very easy for me to root for the main character, and enjoy as he and the princess fell in love. Lorn and Lililaria had so much depth and intensity and there was great focus on them and building their back stories, and I absolutely loved them.
The pace of the story was absolutely perfect, the writing style was so beautiful and amazing, the writing hooks you on, and builds up so much anticipation for the next books in this series, because if I didn't mention this, it is only the first book in a fantasy romance series, that I am very excited to get to! It's an amazing start to the series, too.
The plot was very well done, it was a fun story, with colorful characters, great pace, and mysteries revealed in fantastic ways, answering questions, holding your attention the whole time as you read! I am very excited for the rest of the series, and I totally recommend that you get to this as soon as you can!
A fantasy romance with a brooding MMC who also happens to be a demon and a strong female healer? Sounds right up my alley!
The story was interesting and moved quickly with familiar themes. The writing is not overly complicated making it easy to fall into the story.
The steam was also well done, reminding me (in the good ways!) of an old school romance novel you’d steal from your mom or aunt.
I just wanted more. I wanted more development of the characters and I wanted more showing, not telling. I think the concept was there and there were moments or flashes of character traits that really could have been drawn out further to demonstrate who they are.
This is the first in the series so there’s sure to be lots more to come!
Wow! What a way to start a series. Romance? Adventure? Fantasy? All wrapped up into one amazing book that is so hard to put down once you start. Forget what you think you know about demons, because Prince Lorn is about to blow you away. He's an amazing male lead, and it's easy to fall in love with him. Princess Lililaria is someone I would love to meet outside the book - she's just so likeable! The plot itself moves along smoothly, and keeps you interested from cover to cover. I can't wait to see what the rest of the series has in store!
I enjoyed this book very much. I really don't understand why people can't read a book just for the enjoyment.
Lorn had lead a terrible life and Lily had been restricted in her actions by her dad. These are 2 "people" that are in desperate need of someone to understand them and stand by them.
This is a story of struggle, love and the unusual.
The mood in this is set in medieval times. It has elements of war, betrayal, loyalty, and love. It has plenty of twists that will leave you wanting to read the next book. The twists definitely help to build suspense. I got easily immersed into the world that Wendy created in this. I enjoyed the characters and they felt relatable. This is truly and epic fantasy romance. Can’t wait to read book 2!
I enjoyed the concept but couldn’t get into the characters at all. I had a difficult time with the way the story was written as well. All in all difficult for me to get into but the concept was interesting.
This book will surprise you. Honestly, I had a bit of difficulty getting into the book. The prologue and first chapter is A LOT of narrative, but I'm telling you that you want to get through this. It is informative and helps you know the background. It's like forcing yourself to read the begets in the Bible, a struggle at times, but necessary. The only other possible negative would be there are perspective change without warning or breaking up the text. This was distracting at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly and was able to differentiate better. Now, I said it would surprise you. I pushed through and then I couldn't put it down. The storyline is well written and kept me interested. There was more romance than I expected, but that pleasantly surprised me as well. It is an interesting perspective where we see from Evil perspective rather than Good. Don't write this book off too early that is my recommendation.
