Comic strips are a reflection of society. In the 1930’s when this strip was first begun, this country was in the middle of a depression which refuted the belief that a person was in control of what happened to them, and if one was not successful, it was due to character. The Great War had ended less than 20 years before, and there was a mood of isolationism and a distrust of “foreigners.” Comics were a way to escape the realities of life and bring a sense of control to life. Good guys always won through cleverness and perseverance. Terry and the Pirates was good example. It’s not really much different from ancient mythology or modern day Star Wars. It entertained and reassured people that good triumphs over evil. This strip was one many that helped people cope. This type of entertainment is less appreciated now, but needs to be judged in the context of its time. Yes, I am a history nerd.
