The Captain Duke and his crew are slowly trying to piece together their lives, their livelihood, and the mystery surrounding the gunpowder and the mutiny that cost them their home of Haven in the previous book. Our hero, the Captain Duke, struggles to keep it together as he watches his best friend and mentor, Trick, wallow in the depression brought on by a lost limb, while our heroine, Clara, tries to balance her duties to the crew with her feelings for the enigmatic captain. But they both must ...more

* I was sent this for free from the author in exchange for an honest review *

I definitely enjoy this series, it's a little bit like a combination of the Industrial Magic series by Emma Newman and the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger. There's airships, leading ladies, queer romance, and acceptance of everyone on the crew.
This novella showcased a bit more about the Captain's life when he isn't Prating the skies, and I liked getting to follow who he is and where he comes from. I also

Another good addition to the Tales of the Captain Duke series. I liked the addition of new characters in this book, particularly Professor Sewell and her cool mechanical leg. I would love to see a depiction of that! I also appreciated the seamless addition of a same-sex relationship. It came across as quite natural, and it was not introduced with a bunch of fanfare.

I was happy to finally see some movement in the romance department between a certain two characters. Not totally satisfying, but i'

This is one of those instances where you can clearly see the author's growth between installments--I enjoyed Gentleman and a Scholar even more than the previous two books!

Without spoiling anything, one of my favourite characters suffers a loss that they have to overcome both physically and emotionally throughout the course of the story, with the help of their friends/allies and their own inner fortitude, and I really took pleasure in witnessing that character arc. We also get introduced to a ne

probably my least favourite out of the three so far, unfortunately! it was nice to be back in this world and with these amazing characters, but i really disliked how disability was portrayed. this might be a bit of a spoiler, but there was a happy ending in a character’s disability, but it had nothing to do with acceptance of their circumstances. instead, with technology, they were given the ability to do what they previously loved doing. as a disabled person, it always kind of hurts my heart to ...more

Recommends it for: Fans of Steampunk, fans of a female lead.

Quite possibly my favourite book of the series so far. The involvement and evolution of all the characters, the action and planning, it all seems paramount in this book. All leading to an explosive conclusion in her next book.

My only complaint so far of this series is that I cannot put them down!

I have loved what Rebecca has created so much that I have gone back and read them again. Twice! Really connecting with Trick and the challenges he must overcome, falling for the ferocity of Nessa, and pl

I wish it was longer! If only this was 300 pages rather than 140, it would benefit from added length!

Clara (aka - Rebecca Diem) - debutante - pirate - wise beyond her years, pulls you into her world high above the skies of Victorian London. An emotional roller-coaster ride of quick decisions, battles, friendships and enemies. Never certain who do you trust and the unobvious outcome always a heart beating, breathless surprise. Fall in love again. Align your heart with one of the characters in this book and be prepared...things aren't always as they appear. Captain Duke is a man of mystery...and ...more
