What a great combination of humour, angst, shifters and romance this story proved to be - I thoroughly enjoyed it! It has great characters who are easy to relate to and empathise with, an engaging, action-packed plot full of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing and is written in a way that brings the story to life in the imagination of the reader.

Studying to become a Doctor isn't easy, but it is made harder when you're also working your way to pay for your studies. Actually almost trusti

Pages and pages of inner dialogue and descriptions of things. Boring boring and more boring.

No attraction between the two characters. It was not what I thought it was going to be. I will skip the rest of the series.

Received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

I loved it! It's an amazing read. It has been quite some time since I read paranormal romance and I'm glad that I read this one. It's book one in what looks like a promising new series. Characters are all well-written, story is engaging, and there are enough twists and turns to keep it interesting from the very beginning until the end. There is also some mystery around main characters.
When Sonya's one mistake lead to her becoming a werewolf, she has no idea what to do. Somehow Ty ends up to be t

Holy werewolves, Batman! What did I just read!! Once Bitten by Heather McCorkle is incredible! Book 1 of The Wolves of Hemlock Hollow Series, this book has a winning combination of romance and heat, action, and drama, not to mention plenty of Norse lore and mythology to make a paranormal lover combust! This story was unique and quite different from the shifter stories we’ve come to know and love. Ms. McCorkle did a marvelous job with weaving her story and I am so looking forward to what’s coming ...more

Reading the blurb for Once Bitten and I'm realizing what was it that made me want to read it: Viking werewolf. I've read all sorts of books that contain the combination of a Viking and some other kind of being, but I have yet to encounter this unique to me combo. Shifters are some of my most favorite books and throw in Vikings, heck yay! And...things did not go off quite like I had expected.

Normally, if a story isn't working for me, it usually falls on the heroine. Either she's too weak, or too

Once upon a time, I pretty much exclusively read urban fantasy and paranormal romance, it was the genre that got me back into my love of reading. I still dabble from time to time, but mostly I read a lot of romance these days. But I have always had a soft spot in my heart but UF and PNR, especially when it comes to werewolves, or really any kind of shifter book. This book was an easy pick up for me, because not only was it a shifter book, but it was already really rooted in Norse mythology, whic

Every story that brings us into the world of werewolves and shifters has some basic lore that is universal. Then the author brings in their own unique spin on that world, adding to the established lore of shifters. In Once Bitten we are taken along this journey with Sonya. As she is faced with learning how to survive in this world, we are also learning along with her. It’s a unique world building that makes it a natural flowing process of learning what this world is a

Once Bitten, Heather McCorkle

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance,

My first read of Heather's novels, but I love the werewolf genre and this sounded fun.
I found it a little - well - bland I guess? It was well written, the characters were all clearly set out and the take of the werewolf genre had some fresh additions. Sounds good doesn't it?
However I just found the story dragged, with nothing much happening until the last 20% or so. Even then I found that for a group so set in

One night was all it took to change everything. One moment of weakness, and now I’m becoming. Werewolves were supposed to be things only seen in movies, not things that exist in real life. Instead of med school and homework, my life is filled with a laundry list of things that were once impossibilities. Groups fighting over whom I belong to. The possibility of dying if I don’t learn everything before the next full moon. Figuring out how to survive in a world I never knew existed. But the biggest ...more

Sonya is a med student and has been dating Raul for a couple of weeks. One night as she's kissing him goodnight at the door, he bites her. Ty, our hero, chases Raul away, but he is captured by someone else. Sonya goes back to her apartment and passes out for two days. Raul sends her a letter saying she's special and Loki will look after her, just like Sonya's father said.

The people who captured Ty are the council of the werewolf packs. They appoint him to be Sonya's kennari, which is someone who

It was ok. There were things I liked, things I didn't.

The author portrayed the whole "shifter" thing in a pretty unique way. Sonya got bitten right at the beginning of the book which started her change. The way werewolves shifted, how the transformation happened, and how they lived (pretty much totally normal "people"), were a bit of a different twist. They never thought of their "wolves" as a separate identity like you usually see. They were pretty much just people who could turn into

It had been a minute since I had been in this genre with this little gem drawing my attention. This was also first time for me reading this author. The female lead in this was once going in one direction but when Sonya gets a encounter of a furry kind which will change it all for her. Ty the male lead will have it hard with a challenge. Not that he can't teach but resist is something else. You will get caught up in the drama that unfolds. This is also first in a series and love when I catch the ...more

Sonya is just a student working her way through med school as a waitress. A man who has been chatting her up for a while tries to take things further than she wants. The result of that night will change her forever.
Werewolf Ty gets picked up by the authorities along with the ones he is fighting. He will then get a task that will test his control to the limit.
If our heroine is to survive she must learn to control her new abilities. Her teacher is proving quite the distraction. They must find ou

I love the paranormal genre and found this title while browsing on Netgalley. Heather McCorkle is new to me and after reading the blub thought I'd give it a try. This book started out at a furious pace and stayed that way through the whole book. At times I was a bit lost but I was also really intrigued. The story itself isn't a new one but I was pleasantly surprised at the new and bold ideas of how "becoming" happens. I am always looking for a HEA and this one delivers with a climactic showdown. ...more

This was an interesting take on werewolves, one I haven't read before....but it's a lot to take in. There's lore, and characters and a whole lot more that goes into this story. I must admit that I didn't feel the chemistry between the leads like I probably should have and the complicated lore was somewhat distracting from Sonya's journey for me. I'm not sure if I'll pick up the next in this series, as I am assuming we will get a story on Ayra. I had to force myself though this book as it drug in ...more

My what large teeth you have. The better to bite you with, you naive girl. What started as an intense make-out session for Sonya, a medical student, soon turned painful, and not the good kind at all. Nothing like seeing your blood on someone's teeth to completely ruin the mood.

"I'm sorry it had to be like this. I didn't want it to, I swear." -- Raul

Sonya was making out with a man- Raul - she had met two weeks ago. They were in the alley as she wouldn’t let him in her apartment. The alley was in front of her low income apartment. Sonya didn’t see fate coming for her. Then Raul bit down and locked onto her neck drinking her blood. Then his fangs went back up into his mouth. Then Raul told her he was sorry it had to be this way. There had been a car with the headlights then Raul took off running a man with cold blue eyes and golden hair named ...more

Ty really appreciates his woman, "my tongue slid out and ran along my upper lip, dipping between my fangs. “Dang, woman, you look fine.” I shook my head, grabbed the towel off the leather chaise, and held it out to her. “As much as I would love to spend the entire day making love to you, I have to go to the police station. How do you feel about a ride in my Porsche?” I liked this book, Ty was patient, kind and protective.

Grabbed my attention

This book grabbed my attention from the beginning and never let go. I'm not a big fan of paranormal romance but Sonya and Ty intrigued me early on and I couldn't put it down. I look forward to more adventures in Hemlock Hollow.

Love how the book incorporated Icelandic which really does make this paranormal world more real. Their lust is subtle but constant and I loveeeeed how perfect developed Ty was as a character!

4**** = I like it

Some angst, not a lot. I like my male protagonists a little more cavemen like at times, but this bada** professor thing worked, too. More importantly, our heroine thought he was hot and worth the trouble.

"Clearly he felt something for me. I still didn’t know if the verða was heightening my feelings for him or not, but I was starting to think it might not matter. He was a good man, the kind a girl could have a future with. Maybe it was time I actually went

I received this book from net galley for an honest review. Thank you!!

This novel involves Norse mythology, based on Loki and that the werewolves are descended from Fenir, Loki's son. There is also some romance and action. This novel contains first person points of view from Sonya and Ty, but more from Sonya's perspective.
Sonya is a med student who gets bitten by Raul, a man whom she was seeing. She does not know what this means. Ty finds Sonya and becomes her kennari, to help prepare her for her

From the book's description, this story looked really promising. But once I started reading, it just didn't hold my attention. I didn't really even like the main character, and the secondaries (including the hero) were either too familiar or too mysterious, and unbelievable across the board. I made it to about 20% before I stopped reading. YMMV.

First and foremost, I love to read! Fantasy, sci-fi, historical, romance, and horror are my favorites.

I am an author of historical romance, paranormal, and fantasy. When I'm not volunteering for the IS Foundation, writing, or surfing my social networking sites, I can be found on the slopes, the hiking trails, or paddleboarding. As a native Oregonian, I enjoy the outdoors almost as much as the wor
