Every now and then I’m surprised by the beginning of a book. I wasn’t just surprised by this one, I was shocked. I was unsure if I should continue reading it.
But this isn’t the first time I almost didn’t read a book because of its beginning, so I continued on. I’m glad I did, because the beginning says a lot about the characters and their world. A world I’m not familiar with and hope to never have to live in.

Supergirls is a suspense horror novella. The cover was intriguing and I was in the mood for something dark. On the cover, both girls are aiming guns and they look composed and intent. There wasn’t a scene in the book like that. There was a great deal of perspiration, snot, tears, and blood. Mav Skye, the author does have a talent for describing the characters.

Supergirls is a tight and stylish novella. A dystopian narrative of sexual predation hiding inside broken ideals, it is the story of two women corrupted by a lifestyle whose propaganda they feed on. They are driven by the desire for wealth and their own conditioning by the fictional heroisms of TV and the myth of the superhero. Mav Skye has subverted the ideals of America with humour as their attempt to get money by the unwitting abduction of a serial killer is complicated by idealism

First, let me start with my rating isn't because I found fault with the story. It was actually attention grabbing, but it was also a bit disturbing. And not really my kind of reading material. Towards the end, I was actually hoping these girls just survived.
After their mother walked out on them, sisters Jenn and May have struggled to make ends meet. Working at the 7 Eleven and living in squalor, the sisters would turn tricks to off set what their paychecks did not cover. Tired of living ...more

Two sisters- young ladies at the bottom of their lives- hit upon a desperate plan to turn things around: stealing a cache of money from a rich john and skipping town. But when do things ever go according to plan in their lives?
There's suspense and definitely tension aplenty within the pages as the crime goes awry. The horror is the hell of the girls' own making; May begins hallucinating and slipping into psychosis since she's ...more

In this compelling story, readers will find themselves teetering on the brink of madness.

But though it seems that older sister Jenn may have a plan, it all quickly unravels as reality shifts and we are caught up in a ride of hallucinations, torture, dance parties, and fear. Wow this book is crazy! It sure keeps you interested! What seems like a easy robbery to these to girls turns into a nightmare! Right when you think you found the twist you are hit with another. These two broken girls find they have picked the wrong guy to rob in so many levels. I don’t want to say too much and spoil the surprises, but wow does this au ...more

With Supergirls, Mav Skye has created the first instalment of the Supergirls series. It is a very unusual read. Jenn and May seemed a little strange at the beginning. While I was still trying to determine what to think of them, the story sucked me in, held me in its grip, spitting me out again after completing the read. I never had such a 4D experience before – all senses on full alert; had someone told me to duck – I’d have ducked… Supergirls is entertaining à la Tarantino with a shade of horro

Horrifyingly, Wonderfully Dark I have seen beyond the bounds of infinity and drawn down daemons from the stars. . . . I have harnessed the shadows that stride from world to world to sow death and madness. . . – H.P. Lovecraft – From Beyond, 16 November 1920
I realize that I live on the bubble of insanity. I feel the weight of human suffering, loneliness and despair on me all the time. It’s not getting easier; if anything, it’s always right on the edge of my skin. – Erwin McManus

This was just kind of messed up. Jenn and May are sisters that work at 7-11 and turn tricks just to be able to live in squalor. When they decide to rip off one of their johns its all down hill from there.
While I found the story interesting it just couldn't captivate me. I didn't know if it was all in their heads or if some of it was real. It never really went the way I expected. I found it to be more of a suspenseful than horror story.
Still not exactly sure what happened at the end.

This girl just wasn't my cup of tea. I found the story to be quite dull and had to force myself to keep reading, because I had made a commitment to read the story and give it a review. The story just didn't hold any appeal to me, and it wasn't because of the disturbing plot points in the story. I just couldn't find interest in the story, which I found surprising after seeing some of the four star ratings.

A tight, taut, psychotic night with the Supergirls as they try to find their way into and out of a twisted killer's mansion with enough loot to change their crappy lives. Fun and surprising and sensual at times, Supergirls occasionally surprises itself with moments of revelatory artistry.

When Mav Skye isn't turning innocent characters into axe murderers, refinishing old furniture, chasing around her spring ducklings, or reading the latest horror novel, she's hosting the new horror story podcast, Dark Softly Tales. She adores puppies, pirates, skulls, red hots, Tarantino movies and yes, Godzilla. Especially Godzilla.
