Burn Country is a police procedural revolving around a rash of arsons. The central focus is the final arson during which a high-profile politician was murdered. The plot is intricate and complex, with details that are well laid out and easy to follow.

The mystery is set up so that we are able to play detective along with the police. We dig deep into the Senator's life, unraveling the secrets of his past while forming a picture of the man he was. Alternately, we follow leads on the first group of

After reading this book, I am going to go back and find the first book in this series, as I found the characters and story refreshing, true-to-life and interesting. The story uses a series of unexplained barn/out buildings burnings as a backdrop, but the real plot involves the life and death of a fairly well known social activist painter, recently appointed to the upper chamber by the Canadian prime minister. I will be honest, I know little about how the Canadian parliament is organized and foun ...more

Burn County is the second book in McCann’s March and Walker detective series and it has a different tone from his Donaghue and Stainer crime series. I have to admit that it fits better with my comfort zone – an intriguing plot that picks up pace a bit as it nears the climax but not too much graphic violence. There’s nothing in it that would make me squirm and screw my eyes shut but the author didn’t lose sight of the fact that the story centered around a murder and the details of the crime aren’ ...more

Though DI Ellie March may have her hands full with the cases she takes on, she's determined in bringing the culprits to justice. When a string of recent fires comes to her attention, she's not quite sure what to make of them. Part of her wonders if there's a serial arsonist out there. If so, why is the person intent on only burning barns? Things soon take an unexpected turn when a body turns up in one of them. Determined to get to the bottom of things, she dives head first into the case, never o ...more

Burn Country by Michael J. McCann is the fourth novel I have read by this author. A fire has broken out and Ontario Provincial Detective Ellie March is brought in after a body has been discovered in the fire. After identification, it is determined that the body is that of Independent Senator Darius Lane. Darius was a famous artist with an interesting past.

Detective Constable Kevin Walker is investigating the case also, this was not the only fire and it appears that there is a serial arsonist on

Burn Country is the second book in the March and Walker series and builds on the two eponymous detectives introduced in Sorrow Lake. As with the first book, McCann's depiction of rural Ontario are rich and detailed and spot on, capturing the different characters and characteristics of life in Eastern Ontario outside the capital. Similarly, McCann adds authenticity to the story by accurately depicting the details of the Ontario Provincial Police, and for added measure adds the RCMP into the mix t ...more

This book was especially interesting because the locale is familiar to me. Burn Country, as per its title, deals with a series of unsolved arsons in a rural area on the outskirts of Ottawa. The most recent barn fire is different from the others because a body has been found and this then becomes a murder inquiry. The investigation is lead by DC Kevin Walker and DI Ellie March who are determined to solve these arson cases. The victim, a senator and an artist, appears to have had a checkered past ...more

Another thoroughly enjoyable police procedural mystery by Michael McCann. What can I say? I'm completely hooked with these books. Mr. McCann creates likable, believable characters, involved with mysteries, workplace politics and personal struggles, with locales all within my stomping grounds. I find that a definitive sign of a good book is feeling contentment, yet loss when the story comes to an end. I enjoyed the company of Ontario Provincial Police Officers Ellie March and Kevin Walker and the ...more

DI Ellie March and DC Kevin Walker are again featured in BURN COUNTRY. There have been multiple barn fires, but now it's claimed the life of Senator Darius Lane. Lane is known more for his artistry and the fact that he is a social activist... and not altogether popular with the masses.

March & Walker split the investigation .... Walker is handling the files of all the barn burnings. Was this one just a part of those ... or did someone take advantage to murder the Senator? March is having to d
