Rough Around the Soul by Maria Monroe is a standalone romance between an 18 year old high school student and a 25 year old cop. I decided to read it for a few reasons. First, the title grabbed my attention. I love it, and it’s what intrigued me to read the blurb. Second, it sounded like a student/teacher romance which I usually enjoy. Third, it’s advertised as gritty, sexy, and taboo, and I love those kind of books. What I got was something totally different than I expected, but I still

Rough Around the Soul was the first book that I read by Maria Monroe and I'm happy to say it will not be the last.

This book had a ton of angst along with a taboo relationship which is right up my alley. I loved the forbidden love between Jake and Melanie, not only was there an age difference between the 18 year old High School Senior, Melanie, and the 25 year old, police detective, Jake, but Jake was also her teacher in a drug education class that Melanie has to take after some marijuana was fou

I don’t know what's happening lately with all these stars I’m throwing around - but I’m learning to trust my gut from now on when deciding what to read. I read this on a whim, and ended up absolutely loving it.

I loved the heroine. I could’ve just read about her and her life, that’s how much I liked her. I think it went beyond her being an actually nice person and a strong and determined woman and I just connected with her somehow. I just really wanted her to be happy, to have her HEA, to finall

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have been madly in love with Maria Monroe's writing since meeting the sexy as sin Julian and his innocent and gorgeous Lia in her story Julian & Lia. So when I get a chance to cuddle up with another steamy book from Maria, I am all in! After opening Rough Around The Soul, I soon found myself entrenched in the angst and heat and never wanting to escape! What isn't to love about a story about a hot as hell ba

This is a quick, but enjoyable read. Jake meets a young woman who asks him to sleep with her. Jake finds her attractive, not realising he has been given a false name he takes her home for the night. After a fantastic night of sex Aria leaves and he has no way to find her.
There is a lot going in this story, it is told with alternating views between Jake and Melanie which drives the story. It was a bit of insta love, with a side helping of sex thrown was quick read and this is the first time

Jake & Melanie = Struggles, Strength & Amazing Chemistry

Rough Around The Soul is incredibly beautiful and heartfelt story. The characters have gone through their own struggles and difficult times. Both characters are also strong, kind and passionate person. This story starts off with Melanie and Jake meeting and having an one night stand. Rough Around The Soul has interesting characters, an age-difference couple (18 year old & 25 year old) / forbidden relationship and steamy sex sce

The amazing thing of being a reviewer, if I can call me that, is the opportunity to meet new authors, to live their words and to dream high.
I know that I've already said this but I'm on cloud nine right now and it keeps getting better and better every single day.
Maria Monroe is a new author to me and let's just say that I'm hooked. Her writing is simple, appealing, intense and heartfelt. She has a way with words that will make you dream.
Round Around the Soul explores Melanie and Jake's lifes.

Rough Around The Soul is the first novel I've read by author Maria Monroe. I'm happy to announce...I enjoyed this novel! Although I was expecting it to be severely taboo and was let down....just a find the Taboo factor wasn't really that extreme (In my opinion) I still enjoyed it!

I was literally captured and taken away with Melanie and Jake's story.

Melanie was busted with her "best friend's" drugs in her locker, Instead of turning her best friend in Melanie decides to take

Rough. Raw and eRotic.

Maria Monroe delivered the perfect combination to a great taboo novel and I'm still reeling from the aftermath of the story.

I'm huge into taboo romances mainly because I embrace diversity (plus, who could resist a teacher/student romance?) so I jumped at the chance to review this book. Guess what? BEST. DE

Jake and Melanie meet at a bar and end up having a one night stand, that was before they find themselves in an awkward situation. You see Melanie is still in high school, but thankfully for Jake she's 18, with Jake being the police officer working with the school as a drug education instructor, Melanie turns up in the class after she takes the fall for her friend.

What transpires between the two is that they can't walk away and forget that one night. Melanie seeks Jake out for the connection b

I actually liked this story. It wasn't what I expected after reading the blurb. It was far from it.

Yes Jake is older than Melanie but it wasn't a gross or disturbing relationship. Melanie is an 18 year old with the mentality of a 30 year old. She's wayyyy mature for her age and extremely grounded given the rough hand she has been dealt with. Jake was super sweet and gentle.

They both tried very hard to not try and let things go further between them but they couldn't help it. Jake thought he was

Rough Around The Soul by Maria Monroe is a contemporary romance novel, a stand-alone.

Meet Detective Jake Beck, 25 year old, and works as cop temporary in Bells Park.
And there is Melanie Cannon, a 18 year old grade A student at high school.
Both meet and have a hot ONS.
She has to attend a drug education class and Jakes her teacher.
He knows better than to be involved with Melanie, but their chemistry is off the charts crazy.
Both are torn about their feelings. Quote: " Im not the right anything for

Only having herself to depend on, Melanie is trying hard to keep her world together. What was an unforgettable one night stand soon changes into more when Melanie walks into her classroom and discovers Jake is her new instructor. These two had heat from the start but their true connection developed while learning to trust and protect each other no matter the cost. I have not read this author’s work before but I was extremely impressed with how well written and developed the characters were and h ...more

This was such a fantastic story about Melanie, an 18 year old high school student, and Jake, a 25 year old cop. After meeting at a bar one night, she leaves, and he is left wondering where she went. When they meet again, he is shocked to find out she is only 18. This book had me so emotional at times, while Melanie was dealing with her home life, and Jake, trying to help her out and trying to stay away from her, due to her age. Their path to love and happily ever after was filled with pain, and ...more

I loved this book! The feels! It was a great read! This was my first book by this author and I will definitely be reading more!

A 25-year old cop and an 18 year-old senior. How could something deemed so wrong be so right? This was such a good story. Two people with their own struggles trying to find their way. Timing is wrong, but when it's right, how can you fight it?

I highly recommend this one.

Happy reading!

'Rough Around the Soul' isn't your typical student/teacher romance. Melanie (18) and Jake (25) are two legal adults. When Melanie and Jake first meet it isn't under normal circumstances and Melanie isn't necessarily truthful. One thing leads to another, and, well I think you know what I'm saying.

Flash-forward a couple weeks later when Melanie is surprised to find out that the man she can't stop thinking about after that one night is Detect

This was the first book that I have read by this author and it was a good read. If it wasn't for reading this book for a group challenge, I am not sure if I would have naturally picked it. That being said, I enjoyed the story line and how it was written. I like the writing style of this author and can't wait to read more books.

I gotta tell you, I had my reservations about this one, but the blurb intrigued me, so I took a chance. I’m glad I did.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a book about an 18 year old girl and an older man, who is a cop. I figured there would be a lot of guilt and mixed feelings on his part and there was. What I was most worried about was how Melanie, the 18 year old heroine, would be written. Would she be overly mature due to life circumstances or would she be overly immature, because, hel

When you get tagged in a post about a book from your filthy friends, you know you can’t hold back one-clicking. Rough Around the Soul held promises of being a taboo – age gap romance and although I did enjoy it – there was just something not edgy enough about it.

The book starts off with what appears at first glance to be quite a bang, but ends up being a fade to black sex scene. Now, I get that not many authors toss sex in to their stories in the early chapters, but the fact that a story that is
Jake finds himself in Bells Park, doing his uncle a favor by helping out on the police force that he runs and teaching a drug class. What he doesn't realize is that his uncle is also trying to help him, get away from Chicago and his life and get him back on track after losing his father in a tragic situation.

One night while Jake is at the local bar he spots a woman leaving the bar that he's instantly drawn to. He follows her outside, and after a very brief conversation she lets him know that she
