At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, it’s personal relationships that maintain the fragile peace. Who among them is a Beastar—an academic and social role model destined to become a leader in a society naturally rife with mistrust? Is it Legoshi, the scary looking but soft hearted wolf? And what is up with this murder?!

The Premise

In Beastars vol 1 Legoshi is a grey wolf. A large predator animal. When

It has been a long time since I've seen such a beautiful manga. We are used to less into detail designs and watching humans or humanlike creatures but in here, there are animals that behave like humans but that they face animal troubles. This manga is really a treasure to keep. The design is fantastic and the story looks promising.

*Review for the entire series* I really, really, like this manga. I have nowhere to begin. The conflict escalated, the dialogue is realistic, Legosi is such a fleshed out character, Louis, Jack, and Haru are easily one of my favorite supporting cast of characters over any kind of shounen manga. The problem therein lies with everybody else. The one off chapters about random characters are fun, good world building, but they end up not mattering. Where did the stripper who talked with Louis when he ...more

I had no idea what to expect and am now thoroughly interested! Very unique and expressive art style, love the use of shading and darkness. Weird and riveting story.

Warnings: physical violence, slut-shaming

I think the best way to describe this would be 'dark Zootopia'. The premise of this novel has a bunch of anthropomorphic animals living in a school, where a murder has intensified the divide between the 'herbivore' and 'carnivore' population. Lugosi, a grey wolf, tries his best to appear non-threatening, and he is pretty much a loner, so when one of his herbivore friends, Tem, an alpaca ends up dead in a manner that suggests a carnivore did it, he is

For the fans of a more...mature Zootopia where the carnivores are feared, herbivores may be even more fearsome and a lone wolf who falls in love (in a weird way) and tries to fight his instincts and survive.

Oh and there's talk to turn this into an anime too.

I stumbled over the series when its anime was announced. I don't remember what intrigued me to read this manga (I'm not that into humanoid animals tbh), but I regret nothing. The whole premise is fascinating and makes you thoughtful. The worldbuilding is superb and I like how the animals' characteristics are highlighted.

I don't really know how I feel about this yet. It's good, but I couldn't get Zootopia out of my head while reading. At this point, the two stories are very very very similar and I can't separate them.

Kinda derivative of Zootopia, but that’s part of the allure too.

Can't believe I picked this up but...I did.

I admit, I was initially turned off by the furries...but it seems like it'll be a murder mystery.

Zootopia, but set in a high school and significantly darker. It's not to my taste, but it's fairly well done.

Others have called it "dark Zootopia" and that's an apt description. A bit on-the-nose? Maybe. Kept my interest? I mean, I finished it. Did I put in a library request for volume 2? .... yeah..... I kinda need to see where this goes.

so far there hasn't been anything about this I haven't enjoyed. I'm actually pretty eager to keep reading it. Paru's got some really amazing aesthetic when it comes to their art and their story-telling, and all the characters so far have been interesting in their own way

also Louis got big dick energy

I love Itagaki's art style (and the work of her 2 assistants). The setup and setting is interesting but I reserve judgment on whether it's going to get too weird for me or not.

This was really interesting. I had seen the manga in stores for some time--it caught my eye because it was different. There aren't so many anthropomorphic animal comics in Japan as compared to the United States, so I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. I also listened to a pod cast that discussed the manga.

And it's interesting--and enjoyably so. The story revolves around a grey wold named Lugosi (named after the actor who played Dracula in the 1931 film!), who is in high school and is part

Wow, how bizarre and compelling this manga is! ~And fantastic art to boot!~ I'll be kinda wrapping my thoughts around 1-3 in general.

We have Legoshi who is an awkward teen who happens to be a large carnivore in a world of peaceful tension between herbivores and carnivores. Legoshi is a sensitive individual who can feel this tension all too well in their society and really tries to hid away from it. Later he finds his predatory nature is awakening when he encounters a dwarf rabbit. He borders if

In a world of anthropomorphic animals, there are stereotypes that carnivores are just fearsome predators in the eyes of many herbivores. When an alpaca is murdered at Cherryton High School, the fear towards carnivores skyrockets. Legosi, a student at this school, is a large wolf. But despite his broad, feral appearance he is actually kind and observant of others. When internal drama and issues affects his school life, he is forced to confront his own place in this co-existing society. This is ...more

No, as i've read all volumes so far ( upto vol 16 ), i always give an introduction in the first volume. SO, here goes nothing-

Beastars is a manga that might seem childish because of animal characters and such. after reading the first few pages, you will need to correct yourself. This is much more. the writer, has created an enormous world with divisions, with different cultures, natures, habits-- but that's not all!

I had Murakami vibes from some of the pages in the later volumes. I think, i

The Anthropomorphic Manga of the Year

Before I begin, I would like to note that the Beastars series features anthropomorphic animals, also known as furries. You might be more familiar with this concept if you think of Disney's Zootopia film. In fact, I would venture so far as to say that Beastars is the manga version of Zootopia with more dramatic edge and analysis of social class inequalities underlined with civil unrest through restraining animalistic instincts.

From an artistic and editorial

I really don't know how to tag this.

The story takes place in a world where herbivores and carnivores live in peace, similarly to Zootopia. But this one starts with an alpaca male student named Tem getting eaten alive by one of his classmates, whom he recognizes in his last moments. After that we meet Legoshi, our MC who also happens to be a grey wolf. He's in the theater club and was close with Tem, who was also a fellow club member. The volume follows Legoshi and his theater club plus a female

I'm in love with this series. I found it because I kept seeing a lot of people refer to it as a darker version of Zootopia, and I guess I can see why someone would say that. It's a very similar setting. A world where everyone is an animal, carnivores and herbivores live together in an uneasy coexistence, eating other animals is against the law... But this explores the aspects of that setting that Zootopia didn't. Things like what do carnivores eat? Where do they get it? Are they able to suppress ...more

While this manga does share a lot of similarities with Zootopia with the theme of racism and differences between herbivores and carnivores also they do share a similiar type of world were the size of the characters is pretty close at how big the animal is in real life. But their are a number of differences for example the story is much smaller in focuses as it is only focusing on a single school after the death of a herbivore student. In fact the story of this manga actually reminds of the ...more

This was... odd. It's a boarding school story where the school is populated by semi-anthropomorphic animals. The student body is divided into predators and prey, and there is discomfort with this while at the same time the students interact in class and clubs, and are sometimes friends.

Then a student is murdered. Is the death even being investigated? We don't really know because we only see the kids' viewpoints, not any adults or anything outside the school. Most people seem eager to forget the
