The name suggests the foundation of the stories. This is an exclusive collection of only 8 stories based on some whimsical characters. Every main character in all these stories has one thing in common. In a true sense, they are not whimsical; actually they have set their own doctrines and have stuck to them, no matter whatever happens. In one of the stories, the hero dies just because of his doctrines. The other story is based on the mentality of being lame; it proves that many a times those who are physically disabled are more firm than those who are physically capable of doing everything but have a lame and limp mind. One story is based on the insecurity; here the heroine who had refused someone whom she loved so much comes into contact with him again. She feels that he will blackmail her but fails to understand him, at the end, though very beautiful, her insecure mind shows its ugliness. Each and every story has some splendid felling or other to share with us, to reveal the vastness and the insularity of the mind.
Vasant Purushottam Kale, popularly known as Va Pu, was Marathi writer who wrote short stories, novels, and biographical sketches. He authored more than 60 books. His well-known books include Partner, Vapurza, Hi Waat Ekatichi, and Thikri.
One does wish the pleasure of reading this book wasn't marred so much by editing and proof-checking mistakes, some glaring even while reading, others obvious when attempting to quote.
This, coupled with mistakes of language - and characterisation - bother all the more in reading the heartbreaking stories, such as
Why is a refugee after partition, for example, using language idioms that belong to the very community responsible for deaths of his family members, apart from loss of his homes, homeland, all heritage?
But it's obviously not in character, since the language itself is used wrong, and is more of a local urdu speaker than of a refugee, language translated from Marathi and not that of an original Hindi or Punjabi or Sindhi speaker. ................................................................................................
At some point, although not until well into the story, पाळणा is bound to remind one of Tagore's heartbreaking story, 'Khokababur Pratyavartan'.
Moden Pan Waknar Nahi by V P Kale is a collection of 8 short stories. The name of the book Moden Pan Waknar Nahi means I'll break but I won't bend. Just as the name suggests, each story focuses a character that abides by this particular trait where he/she is ready to break but will never give up on their ideologies.
8 stories though character driven, they give us something to think about. Each story stays with us a long time after reading it. The stories and people in the book are relatable and one that we would come across in our daily lives. However, the way they deal with the situation they are in is something that makes a place in our heart.
One story talks about 2 brothers, one with absolutely no self respect while other dies saving his self respect.
The other one shows how an old man is stuck up with his own perception about someone and no matter how good the other person is, this old man always finds faults in him making his own life miserable.
Then there's this story where a man though has liked everything about a girl, when his father rejects her because she has a small defect in her leg couldn't stand up to his father. But when after years, the same girl is getting married to his friend, he feels it necessary to tell the girl how ill charactered his friend is and one who is not right for her. It's the way she answers him back was something I absolutely loved.
My favorite amongst all were two stories. One named Jaldhara and the other one Palna. Jaldhara is about a person with a peculiar personality who has gone through a very bad experience but has now shaped his life based on the things he learnt from his past. Palna again is about a person with weird personality but someone who is ready to do anything for people he cares for.
Each story starts with a small dialogue that will appear in the story. And each introductory dialogue makes a great impact that you look forward to read the entire story. Written in simple language, this book is simple yet poignant in many ways. I am not sure if this book has been translated into English but if not then I would definitely want it to reach as many readers as possible as there's something that each reader would find relatable in this book.
Theme of the book is very strange. But this is very true analysis of some of human beings living around us. Each story narrates the unique trait and each one is having positive trait ultimately. That's why I found it very fascinating.
