Brandi Buefred and her sisters Barbara and Bonnie were never that close to begin with. After their beloved mother died, the shaky family ties unraveled, leaving a family divided.
When a cookie bake-off comes to Brandi's small town and her childhood nemesis enters the competition, she knows her only hope of winning the competition and honoring her mother's baking legacy is to reunite with her sisters to revive their mother's old, forgotten recipes. Will Barbara and Bonnie be game for the challenge? Do the Buefred sisters have what it takes to beat the tough cookie-making competition? And if they do win, will it be a temporary success or the start of becoming a real family again?

I'm sure that Holly Tierny-Bedord has her fans, but I'm not convinced this book was my thing. It's cute for sure, but there's nothing original or innovative about the plot or the writing. I might even say that the quirky aspect of the story felt a bit forced, for instance the names of the contest, the competitors, etc. This story just gives us a glimpse (being a short story) of the author's capabilities, but I think I've read enough. Hopefully other readers enjoyed it, but for me, the substance was a bit on the thin side.
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedord is a story about reconnecting. One thing that I so enjoy about this author's stories is that there is always humor and characters that you can relate to. The author won't let you down with this one either. This is a cute short story that will pull you in from the first page forward. This story will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions that you will want to ride. Find out what happens with these characters as the reconnect!
Brandi, Barbara, and Bonnie Buefred that are sisters who were not really that close and after the loss of their mother they seem to be divided. When Brandi see's that her town is having a bake off and her childhood nemesis enters, she knew that she and her sisters must enter too. She manages to convince her sisters that they need to do with in the memory of their mother and use her recipes. Is everyone up for the challenge? Will they renew their mother's forgotten recipes? Do they have what it takes to take home the prize? How will this effect their family? Will changes change for them as they know it? Will these three renew their connection and form a bond for life?
This is my favorite of Holly Tierney-Bedord's stories and I can't wait to read more. Holly lives in Madison, Wisconsin. She is the author of several other books. This is a fast page turning story that you will read in one sitting. The author has created a story that is cute and will take your heart. You will need to see what happens with this family. You will love these characters and need to see what happens with them. I highly suggest this story as I know you will enjoy reading it as much as I have and will want to see what happens with this family.
This is the second book that I have read from the author and I also fell in love with this book too. This is a very sweet stand alone that will make your heart melt. I was so addicted to this story it only took me an hour to read it. It is a short story but it has a huge lesson that we all can learn from.
This is a story about three different sisters coming together for family. In the beginning you meet the Bueford family. Sally and Dob are about to have their first born Barbara. She was the golden child until her other sisters Bonnie and Brandi came along. Brandi was really young when they find out that she is a star. The family is then rushed to Hollywood. Brandi becomes famous overnight. When Brandi gets older the jobs stop and they all have to leave that lifestyle. They finally end up back in their hometown in Wisconsin. This is where the sisters finish growing up. Twenty-five years pass and the sisters are now middle age adults with their own families to take care of. The three sisters have grown apart over the years. They also just lost the person that held the family together their mother and now the dad also goes missing. Brandi the youngest finds out a way to honor their mother. Her town is having a baking contest called the Yodel-ay-her-hoo-Yaletide cookie bake off. The prize is $100,000 and also a TV show. She knows she will need help so she calls her sisters and they all come together for their mom. Brandi also finds out that one of their opponents is her childhood enemy and she wants to settle the score once and for all. Do these sisters have the secret recipe to come back together and win or will this competition make them grow further apart?
I loved this book. This is a perfect read to get into the holidays. This story shows that family is family no matter how far you are from another. This is a short story but the author gives it so much depth you don't realize it's a small book. You will fall in love with these sisters. I love how they are all so different but they put it aside to honor their mother. I had tears in my eyes in the end. I can't wait to find out what this author will write about next.
“Yummy, flaky, slightly crumbly, just-sweet-enough-but-not-too-sweet butter cookies.” I felt like this was such a sweet short story of family, commitment to that bond that a family has, and the type of love that is experienced in a family, tightknit or not. Family is family. The book follows the early years of the Bueford family in the beginning. There is the father and mother, Dob and Sally. They live in a little town of Wisconsin and with each little girl they have they hope for something to be special, something that will put the family into the spotlight. The firstborn is Barbara, then Bonnie, and lastly the golden ticket is Brandi. Brandi is quickly thrust into the spotlight even as a baby for her desirable features and charm. It takes the family to Hollywood to seek the fame and fortune that many rushed to find in the early 70’s. Unfortunately, aging comes with cost and the family is found scrounging to make ends meet when Brandi no longer can get the roles she was getting before after puberty. All the while there is a lot of the dynamics of sisterhood, which I personally enjoyed coming from a family of three girls and being the oldest. It was so very spot on and accurate. Family is messy, it isn’t always perfect relationships and meals around the table at 5 pm with everyone chattering about wonderful days. The old sitcoms our parents grew up with is not much a thing now. So much of that is portrayed in such a short well wrapped gift of a book. The family ends up stranded in Nebraska and makes a life for a few years until they can reach home, Wisconsin. The story jumps 25 years into the future and the girls are all grown up with lives of their own. Sadly, they have grown apart and it’s been well over 5 years since they all have gotten together. Especially with the loss of their beloved mother, Sally and the disappearance of their father Dob. It is Sally and her recipes for cookies that thrusts the girls back together in hopes of settling and old score with a high school nemesis from their past. It is a bake off competition in their hometown called the Yodel-ay-hee-hoo Yuletide Cookie Bake off. The winning team will get $100,000.00 and their own television show. That is not the main reason for the girls winning. They are doing this in memory of their mother and also in hopes that the television coverage will lead them to their lost father. I won’t give away the winning team but I will tell you that regardless of the outcome this family finds peace and they find their way back to each other. I felt that for such a short story this shined bright and made me smile regularly through it. I’m interested in reading more that would come from Holly Tierny-Bedord.
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies is a novella by Holly Tierney-Bedford. I have read quite a few of her novellas before so I was ready to have fun! Her novellas are short and sweet delivering a mix of humor and deep human emotion. It is a story of three Buefred sisters that have never been close but their family was always kept together by their mother who was a wizard when it came to making cookies! This short story pulls you in from page one onward and you are on a rollercoaster ride through all 42 pages! First you might be sort of on the fence about will these sisters really manage to pull it together – it feels like they all are pulling in different directions BUT then …well, you need to read it yourself to find out if they manage to pull it together, remember their mother’s cookie recipes, win the prize …. I have to admit that so far this is my favorite Holly’s story, it was heartwarming offering hope when playing out oh so often happening ‘sibling drifting apart’ scenario! Have fun! Grab a cookie and glass of milk and enjoy it!
“To butter Cookies” This is a short sweet story that took my heart from the very beginning. This family is very dysfunctional at best. The three daughters don’t get along or care that much about each other. The dad had rather sleep than work. The family has been living off one of the girls’ fame on television. It has supported them well but when puberty hit and zits showed up then the only thing that dried up was her career. Dear sweet Mom must start baking and her cookies become famous, but as her health fails then it is up to the daughters to come together and bake those cookies for a prize. No one knows where in the world dad is but it is time to bring the family together. Can the girls find him before it is to late or is everything they do in remembrance of their parents? Holly Tierney Bedford has gotten my attention with this adorable read. I wanted the story to go on and on, it is that good! Don’t miss this read it is quick and you will be so glad you read it.
I give this novella a five star rating. This story is a well-told tale about a family who struggles to keep things together after the loss of a key family member. Three sisters share their childhood struggle and how they have fared in their adult lives. One of the sisters gets the idea to use their mother’s butter cookies to solve their problems and reunite the family unit. The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies is a fun, energetic story. Holly Tierney-Bedord mixes her fun, quirky writing style intertwined with a creative imagination to entertain us the readers. The characters are real, they could easily be one of our neighbors. This a story that I wish there was more of...a full length novel with more details and exciting interaction. This is must read for anyone who would like to read something fit for their grandmother...an old-fashioned type of story as compared to most.
I didn’t even make it to the halfway point on these 40 pages. The entire family is a bunch of selfish self centered get rich quick fame seekers. I couldn’t stand the first two daughters right off the bat. The third daughter was even worse. Then all of a sudden it’s 24 years later the father long gone (no explanation) the mother has passed the sisters haven’t spoken in 5 yrs (even though the mother has been gone less than a year) the middle child (about mid 40’s) has an infant and toddler children ..... I felt like too much didn’t make sense.... should have made the book a bit longer and developed the characters more. I got lost in this and decided to just drop the book. I’m usually one to read through to the end no matter how bad the book gets but I had zero interest to keep going.
Book Review: The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies Author: Holly Tierney-Bedford FIVE STARS Holly Tierney-Bedford has once again given us a short sweet story about 3 sisters who have been estranged for several years and are trying to win a contest. The story is really a quick read and it doesn't delve much into the personal aspects of the sisters but you can see how they differ when you read this book. But the fact that they come together to honor a special person in their lives brings them together. This book is a really fast read. Took me maybe thiry to fourty-five minutes to complete. So sweet and refreshing. A good read for any again. There are no adult situations or language. I am quickly becoming a fan of Holly and her writing. This being my third maybe even fourth book that I have read of hers and she never fails to make you feel good. The small suprises and little quirks that make you giggle or laugh are just enough to clear your mind from all the crap that life deals at you in a day. FIVE STARS Kelli Harper
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies is a lovely novella by Holly Tierney-Bedord. I have read a few novellas by this author now and I have to say this was just as I expected – short and very sweet! Before I read this authors work I wasn’t a fan of novellas but I have to say I have enjoyed all the ones that I have read by Holly. They are always really well written and so much story crammed into so very few pages. I really enjoyed this story. It had a lovely deeper meaning to it that showed butter cookies really do have miraculous powers! Sisters Brandi, Bonnie and Barbara have never been close and after their mother passed away the family ties unravelled quickly. When Brandi finds out that a cookie bake-off is coming to her town she wants to enter – she also finds out that her arch nemesis from her childhood is also entering the competition. Brandi wants to honour her mother’s baking skills by entering the competition – but she needs the help of her sisters if she has any hope of winning. I loved how the estranged sisters put aside their problems to try and honour their Mother. I have to admit with a short story I find it hard to connect with the characters but I definitely enjoyed reading about the sisters! The book also made me extremely hungry!! I could imagine all the wonderful things they were baking! If you are looking for a nice, short, sweet, easy read then I definitely recommend this novella!
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedord a fabulous five-star read. This author writes funny, and honest stories. This is the story of Brandi Buefred a woman who leads a normal life with her husband and children, a whole world away from her childhood when she used to be a child star. Her life doesn’t seem to be as smooth as she once though, as her beloved mother sadly died and she isn’t as close to her sisters Barbara and Bonnie as she once was. The ties of her family seem to be falling apart, but just like all those years ago, those magical butter cookies have a chance to bring a family back together. When Barbara’s nemesis comes to town with a baking show competition, the old rivalry comes out. Will the Bueferd sisters have what it takes to win. Will they manage to find family as well as great cookies? Holly Tierney-Bedord writes laugh out loud funny and cute novellas, you are guaranteed to read this with a smile on your face. It maybe because I am a cookie lover, but I guarantee that you would be craving cookies as you read this story.
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies is a very short story that is packed full of charm and wonder. There is a special talent needed to make such a short story feel as if it is longer. Holly Tierney-Bedord has that talent and more. In just forty-two pages we meet these characters that instantly enrapture us. We get sucked into their world and shortly after we find ourselves on the edge of our seat in anticipation. If this had been a longer story I’m sure there would have been tears shed and cheers screamed. This was a perfect bite size story that introduces this author’s talents to those who don’t know her yet and it keeps you wanting more. This is the third or fourth short story I have read by her and each one does the same thing to me, it makes me smile. This is a wonderful story of three sisters trying to honor their mother while healing themselves at the same time. What transpires had me smelling sugar and butter baking and smiling the whole time. This was a very sweet story of a family coming together when necessary and showing that family trumps all. I have been a fan of Holly Tierney-Bedord since the first story and this four-star read is no exception. This will only take an hour or so to read but it will stay with you for so much longer, but for me, I’m going to go bake some cookies now.
A light and uplifting tale of the Buefred sisters, a Midwest family who find fame and fortune through their mother’s cookie recipes. Brandi, Barbara and Bonnie Buefred have grown apart since the death of their mother and the subsequent disappearance of their father. When Brandi hears that an old rival has set up a new career in TV cookery & is holding a cookie baking competition locally she enlists the help of her sisters to finally right the wrongs done to her mother many years before. The sisters bond once again and start to research the family recipes, in particular their favourite butter cookies. Perfecting the delightful recipes left by their mother they appeal to the judges’ tastebuds and win hearts along the way too. I thought this book was a delight from beginning to end. It was uplifting and had a lovely feel to it. I didn’t want it to finish, although I did want to make some of the cookies mentioned. Maybe the author could add in a butter cookie recipe at the end of the next edition?

Brandi, Bonnie and Barbara Beufred’s family fell apart after the horribly, sad death of their mother. Brandi jumps at an opportunity to enter her mother’s cookie recipe in a local bake off when she discovers her archenemy has entered the contest. Brandi is aware, however, that if she has any chance at winning she has to bring her sisters together.
Will their mother’s recipe and their desire to honor her memory be enough to heal them and let them get past all the heartbreak?

The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedord Four Stars
This is the second novelette I have read by Holly Tierney-Bedford. They keep Getting better and better. This short story is about the Buefred family. They travel from California to Wisconsin with a fifteen year stop off in Nebraska. While in Nebraska, Sally, Mom Buefred, gets a job at a truck stop diner. She teaches her daughters, Brandi, Barbara and Bonnie how to make her delicious cookies. When the family leaves Nebraska they become estranged, but after their mother's death Brandi, Barbara and Bonnie reunite for a cookie baking contest where the band together to see if they can beat the other team for $100,000 and a cooking show of their own. They also take the opportunity to find their dad while they are on tv for the contest who they haven't seen since their mother's death. This is a fast read that made me laugh. A real feel good book!
I have definitely become a fan of Holly’s! This is the 3rd book of hers I read and I loved it just as much as Dogged by Love and Surviving Valencia. From the very first page the Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies put me in a delightful mood. I really didn’t want this story to end and secretly wish for a sequel or even full length novel one day! We meet three sisters, Brandi, Bonnie and Barbara who, after losing their mother, seem as estranged as ever before. When they enter a bake off, so Brandi can defeat her nemesis, things become challenging, and their relationship gets tested. Hilarity ensues, along with some touching moments and determination from the sisters that is uplifting. I really enjoyed the back story of fame, and an absent father, I felt that really pulled the story in and gave clues as to why the sisters are the way they are. Holly has a talent for short stories. She pulls you in with her charming and funny characters, delivering a plot that is always heartfelt and entertaining. You will not be disappointed! Pick up a copy today!
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedard is a delightful, short story of The Beufred Sisters. Barbara, Bonnie and Brandi Beufred grew up in some less than conventional ways and this is the story of their coming together after several years apart. Each sister brings a different talent or view point to the mix and it takes a few heart beats to get into a unified rhythm. It was a pleasure watching their recipe for sisterhood come to life.
Once again, Holly Tierney-Bedard has written a fast paced, full bodied story which I could visualize while reading. I’ve never been disappointed by one of her stories. I like the phrase “you learn something new every day”. In this story I learned that baking is a science and recipes must be followed exactly and if you have a little bit less of a needed ingredient, math comes to the rescue. I had to eat a few cookies after reading this story to satisfy my craving for sweets while reading.
The Miraculous Power Of Butter Cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedford is a light hearted, funny and touching story.
When her third daughters child star career comes to a halt as she reaches the awkward teenage years, Sally has an idea for them to earn some money. Things don’t quite go according to plan though it does get her a job.
25 years later and Sally has passed away. Her family is fragmented and distant. But when her third daughter Brandi sees a competition tv with a substantial prize. It reminds her of her mother’s efforts to earn for the family and she is inspired to reunite with her sisters using her mother’s cookie recipes to win the prize. Re-bonding, memories and push them forward into hopes of a new lease of life and reconnecting with their father. Go Team Buefred!
This story is heartwarming, well written and has a lovely flow to it that kept me reading until it was done. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
The miraculous power of butter cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedford is a fabulous four star read. I loved this short story, it really made me smile. I loved the characters and their individuality, i could close my eyes and just picture them all! This novella tells the story of a disconnected family, they never seemed to gel together from the outset Be when the mother passed away they have no reason to stay together and they drift apart. She was their glue. But when a competition for baking cookies comes along the sisters get together to make their mother's favorites and best recipes and they are brought closer together than ever before. I loved the family interaction between these sisters, I rolled my eyes along with Brandi and the things her sisters says to her, they are class! They are all so self absorbed and so uninterested in each others lives until the baking competition awakens a sisterly bond, it is a really heart warming story. This is the first story from this author I have read but i will be going on the hunt for more.
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies-Holly Tierney-Bedford
4 Stars Review
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies was a fantastic novella about reconnecting with your loved ones! It’s a sweet little story that makes you believe that your family will always be there for you, no matter what!
This story follows the three Buefred sisters, Barbara, Bonnie, and Brandi. They had lost contact with one another for many years, but after seeing her middle school nemesis on her own TV baking show Brandi decides to reach out to her sisters. She proposes they enter in the First Annual Yodel-ay-hee-hoo Yuletide Cookie Bakeoff. At first Barbara and Bonnie come up with excuses but they eventually come around to honor their mother, Sally Buefred baker extraordinaire, and of course to win the grand prize.
The sisters have little time to practice and soon learn the competition is more serious then they had anticipated. Along with the stress of baking on live television they also have to deal with Jessica and her untrustworthy mother. The sisters’ spirits remain high and they soon accept that even if they don’t win at least they were reunited, and that’s really all that matters.
This novella had a beautiful storyline and the characters were very relatable. It will no doubt get you into the spirit of baking! It was definitely a fun little read and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for an uplifting story with some holiday cheer!
The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedord
This cute short story gets 4 stars. Barbara, Bonnie, and Brandi were the 3 beautiful daughters of Dob and Sally Bueford. It was believed by the parents that each of their daughters was more beautiful then the next. Growing up the girls didn't really get along.
The family moved around quite frequently in order to find jobs and make money. It was very entertaining the way this happened. Brandi was the one who ending up doing commercials and things on television to earn money for the family. Sally was a good baker and taught her girls her recipes.
When they were older with their own families, Barbara got them all back together to enter a baking contest. No one had heard from or knew where their father was. They wanted to win the contest with their mothers great tasting butter cookies. The contest participants contained a girl they knew from school who they didn't like.
Things were intense in during the contest with lots of humor added. This was a funny and touching time for the sisters. You have to read this to find out who won the contest. Do they find their father, gotta read to find out!!
