Roberts Birds of Southern Africa and Newman's Birds of Southern Africa are the definitive bird guides everyone who is interested in birding in South Africa should read.
Roberts Birds has been around for a very long time and is the gold standard for birding in South Africa. The plates are beautifully illustrated. The descriptions are clear and concise and it is a lovely book to page through, or to help identify a bird.
Newman's Birds has a more modern feel.
Roberts Birds is a must-read for anyone who is serious about birding in South Africa. It is a classic.
