The founding myths of the United States have almost become universal cultural knowledge: The pioneers at the frontier, fulfilling the nation's manifest destiny by building the new "city upon a hill"; the coolness of the cowboys; the constitution upholding that "all men are created equal". In "Lost Worlds", Swiss professor Aram Mattioli tells the story of those who paid the price: The Native American nations. From the colonial era and the gold rush to the submission of the indigenous people of th ...more

Somehow I had expected to learn more about the cultures and ways of life of the numerous indigenous peoples of North America, threatened by the white settlers; how they interacted in this most difficult time in their history.
However, this book focuses on the atrocious crimes and the seemingly indelible racism of stupid white men. But Mattioli excels in his job. His book is brilliantly written and well-researched. It leaves you speechless and enraged, but I can't recommend it highly enough.
